High Integrity Systems and Safety Management in Hazardous Industries
This book is about the engineering management of hazardous industries, such as oil and gas production, hydrocarbon refining, nuclear power and the manufacture of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Its scope includes an overview of design standards and processes for high integrity systems, safety management processes as applied to hazardous industries and details best practices in design, operations, maintenance and regulation. Selected case studies are used to show how the complex multidisciplinary enterprises to design and operate hazardous plant can sometimes fail. This includes the subtlety and fragility of the robust safety culture that is required. It is aimed at professional engineers who design, build and operate these hazardous plants. This book is also written for business schools and university engineering departments where engineering management is studied.

This indispensable companion is a ready reference for commonly required formulae and data, for use in coursework and examinations (where permitted) and in professional practice. It is not a textbook – the user is expected to know when to use a particular formula, and just as important, when not to use it. Starting with Symbols and Units, and Physical Constants, it moves through the key areas of Analysis, Mechanics, the Properties of Solids and those of Materials, and covers the Earth and the Environment, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Automatic Control, Electricity and Magnetism, Soil Mechanics and finally Structures. It concludes with indexes for both Symbols and Keywords. The units are SI, or multiples, with conversion factors from other systems provided. The symbols are generally those in common use in particular specialities, except where this would cause confusion. This book is aimed at all students of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, plus students of Environmental Science and Earth/Ocean Science. New to this Edition: - A new section on Earth and the Environment - Over 40 new constants, equations and data values - Improvements for clarity and to match current practice better

Four hundred years after their entry Egypt, God's chosen people have managed to get themselves all enslaved. How can the omnipotent creator of the Universe free his people from bondage and deliver them to the promised land? By sending a random shepherd with a speech impediment to repeatedly threaten Pharaoh, that's how. In this satirical retelling of the biblical books of Exodus to Deuteronomy, the long-suffering Moses leads a tribe of grumbling Israelites through the desert whilst trying to appease a petulant deity who turns smitey at the drop of a hat. Will he ever reach the promised land? Will there be any Israelites left unsmitten by the time he gets there? And what exactly is the Lord's beef with yeast anyway?
Unions Resurgent?

Unions Resurgent?

J.R. Shackleton

INSTITUTE OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS

nidottu
Why did the first trade unions form? How have unions changed since they first emerged? What impact do they have on wages, employment and productivity? In this book, J.R. Shackleton answers these questions and guides the reader through the fascinating history of trade unions in Britain. From their origins as secretive and semi-legal societies of workers on the cusp of the Industrial Revolution, to their post-war position at the heart of Britain’s economic and political establishment, to their more equivocal position today, this is a story of change – often gradual but sometimes rapid and disruptive. This book offers an account of the history and economics of trade unionism which, though unsentimental and often critical, is not without sympathy for the aims of the movement that has done so much to shape Britain’s economic landscape. Shackleton looks not only to the past, but also to the future. He examines whether the landslide victory achieved by Keir Starmer’s Labour Party in the 2024 general election is likely to lead to a resurgence in union power and influence.
Social Contracts and Economic Markets

Social Contracts and Economic Markets

The thesis of this book is that people enter into social contracts because they are different from one another and have incentives to cooperate. In economic life, people have identical interests—namely, their own se- interests—so they have an incentive to compete. The social worlds that we create, or map, and those that are already mapped for us are increasingly complex, and thus the tracking of rationality is not so straightforward, although it is everywhere evident. In a sense, this book grew out of two questions: Why hasn't the United States had a second revolution? Or is the revolution yet to come? Many have discussed the current crises that confront contemporary society, such as great economic inequalities, poverty, the declining quality of jobs, the growing power of corporate elites, and racial antago nisms. I attempt to understand these problems in terms of the radical restructuring of social life by economic and spatial forces. My specula tive thesis is that social organizations must reinforce social contracts and nurture the opportunities for them to be forged. However, contemporary organizations, particularly economic ones, have internalized the princi ples of economic markets, thereby inducing competition and easing out cooperation. In defining social contracts, I draw from Rousseau and also from Marx and his analysis of use value. One hopes that new organiza tional forms based on principles of democracy and community will evolve. In a diverse, multicultural society, this requires great mutual understanding and cooperation and the recognition of differences.

J.R. Moehringer grew up captivated by a voice. It was the voice of his father, a New York City disc jockey who vanished before J.R. spoke his first word. Sitting on the stoop, pressing an ear to the radio, J.R. would strain to hear in that plummy baritone the secrets of masculinity and identity. Though J.R.'s mother was his world, his rock, he craved something more, something faintly and hauntingly audible only in The Voice. At eight years old, suddenly unable to find The Voice on the radio, J.R. turned in desperation to the bar on the corner, where he found a rousing chorus of new voices. The alphas along the bar--including J.R.'s Uncle Charlie, a Humphrey Bogart look-alike; Colt, a Yogi Bear sound-alike; and Joey D, a softhearted brawler--took J.R. to the beach, to ballgames, and ultimately into their circle. They taught J.R., tended him, and provided a kind of fathering-by-committee. Torn between the stirring example of his mother and the lurid romance of the bar, J.R. tried to forge a self somewhere in the center. But when it was time for J.R. to leave home, the bar became an increasingly seductive sanctuary, a place to return and regroup during his picaresque journeys. Time and again the bar offered shelter from failure, rejection, heartbreak--and eventually from reality. In the grand tradition of landmark memoirs, The Tender Bar is suspenseful, wrenching, and achingly funny. A classic American story of self-invention and escape, of the fierce love between a single mother and an only son, it's also a moving portrait of one boy's struggle to become a man, and an unforgettable depiction of how men remain, at heart, lost boys.

The widening of political, racial, generational, and religious differences leads too often to an "us vs. them" mentality. The Sacred Overlap communicates a refreshing vision that embraces tension and shows us how to live in radical love and faithfulness between the extremes that isolate and divide people. The gospels display how Jesus was committed to crossing the either/or waters of the cultural and societal wars of his day. His miracles and parables often broke or ignored religious and political lines that seemed all important. He comforted the disturbed and disturbed the comfortable.Using Jesus' example, J. R. Briggs offers a fresh and relevant understanding of evangelism and discipleship in our present time of extreme polarization. Without sacrificing biblical integrity, The Sacred Overlap is a joyful exploration of the complexity of life in the peace of Christ. With careful discernment, Briggs:Shares creative ways to engage with God's mission of ministering to those who are intrigued by Jesus but turned off by church.Explores what it means to be joyful in the midst of heart-wrenching pain and earthly suffering.Models what it means to maintain a posture of convicted civility which emphasizes both grace and truth. The Sacred Overlap helps readers see how Christians are called to live with their feet firmly planted in two different worlds—in both heaven and earth—living naturally with both the sacred and the ordinary. Only then can a Christian be a faithful witness and disciple of Jesus.
The Culture of Excess

The Culture of Excess

In the wake of the 2008-2009 economic recession, this revealing work offers a psychological explanation of how we as a nation grapple with self-control and how we can develop a new and healthier generation. As J.R. Slosar shows in this urgent, sometimes startling volume, the nation’s fast-and-loose approach to money was in fact a symptom of a more widespread pattern of excessive behavior. In The Culture of Excess: How America Lost Self-Control and Why We Need to Redefine Success, Slosar portrays an America where the drive to succeed and the fear of missing out manifested itself not only in self-entitled corporate fraud, but in everything from sharp rises in obesity and cosmetic medical procedures to equally troubling increases in eating disorders, panic attacks, and outbreaks of uncontrollable rage. The Culture of Excess is the first book to assess the impact of economic and social factors on the nation’s psychological well-being. Narcissism, productive narcissism, psychopathy, rigidity and self destruction, perfectionism, the illusion of success, and identity achievement all come into play as Slosar diagnoses the psychological drivers behind this indulgent age, offering his prescription for helping “Generation Me” become “Generation We.”Numerous vignettes and case studies illustrate the major themes of the bookDozens of research citations at the end of each chapterAn extensive bibliography referencing 75 professional journals and 48 booksA comprehensive index
