Reading Jane Austen After Reading Charlotte Smith

Reading Jane Austen After Reading Charlotte Smith

Jacqueline M. Labbe

sidottu
This book explores what it means to read the six major works of Jane Austen, inlight of the ten major works of fiction by Charlotte Smith. It proposes that Smithhad a deep and lasting impact on Austen, but this is not an influence study. Instead,it argues for the possibility that two authors who never met could between themwrite something into being, both responding to and creating a novelistic zeitgeist. This, the book argues, can be called co-writing. This book will appeal to studentsand scholars of the novel, of women’s writing, and of Smith and Austen specifically.

Some Words of Jane Austen

Some Words of Jane Austen

Stuart M Tave

University of Chicago Press
2019
pokkari
Jane Austen’s readers continue to find delight in the justness of her moral and psychological discriminations. But for most readers, her values have been a phenomenon more felt than fully apprehended. In this book, Stuart M. Tave identifies and explains a number of the central concepts across Austen’s novels—examining how words like “odd,” “exertion,” and, of course, “sensibility,” hold the key to understanding the Regency author’s language of moral values. Tracing the force and function of these words from Sense and Sensibility to Persuasion, Tave invites us to consider the peculiar and subtle ways in which word choice informs the conduct, moral standing, and self-awareness of Austen’s remarkable characters.

Reading Jane Austenexplores Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion against their historical and cultural backdrop to show precisely how Jane Austen sets out the core themes of British morality in her novels. Austen s period was arguably the most socially and politically tumultuous in England s history, and by replacing the novels in this remarkable era, Scheuermann sharply defines Austen s view of the social contract.

Re-Presenting 'Jane' Shore

Re-Presenting 'Jane' Shore

Maria M. Scott

CRC Press Inc

Re-Presenting 'Jane' Shore analyzes the representation of the mistress of Edward IV of England, known to us as 'Jane' Shore (c. 1445-c. 1527). The daughter of a well-to-do merchant, she left her merchant husband to become the king's concubine. After Edward's death, his brother, later Richard III, charged her with witchcraft and harlotry, prompting Thomas More to include her in his exposition of Richard's perfidies in The History of Richard III. Since then, Jane Shore has been a frequent subject of, among others, poets (Thomas Churchyard and Thomas Deloney), playwrights (Shakespeare and Nicholas Rowe), and novelists (Guy Padget and Jean Plaidy). Scott examines the anxiety in Anglo-American culture generated when sex and politics intersect, using the case of 'Jane' Shore to show how history is compromised and complicated by context. In doing so, she reveals how women continue to be deployed as symbols rather than as actors on the larger stage of the drama that is politics.
