The first book to tell in detail the story of a maverick filmmaker who worked outside the studio system. Providing extended critical discussion on six of his most important films (Shadows, Faces, Minnie and Moskowitz, A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and Love Streams), Ray Carney argues that Cassavetes’ work is a distinctly life-affirming form of modernist expression that is at odds with the world-denying modernism of many of the most important art works produced in this century. Cassavetes is revealed to be a profoundly thoughtful and self-aware filmmaker and a deeply philosophical thinker, whose work takes its place in the American tradition along with the writing of Ralph Waldo Emerson and William James. The six films treated here emerge as expressive interpretations of the bewildering challenges in contemporary American cultural experience.
This biography of the journalist's early life, from his birth in 1870 to his departure for Europe on a special mission for President Woodrow Wilson in 1918, is as much a study of the changing times in which Baker lived as of the man himself. It is the first book to place Baker within a significant context, and as such it presents a full and historically useful portrait of an influential figure in American journalism.Originally published in 1969.A UNC Press Enduring Edition -- UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. These editions are published unaltered from the original, and are presented in affordable paperback formats, bringing readers both historical and cultural value.

The featured subject of the 1966 Denver X-Ray Conference was X-Ray Diffraction Topography and Dynamical X-Ray Phenomena. One of the chairmen of the featured ses sions, Professor R. A. Young, made the following remarks at the conclusion of his session. We think they are quite appropriate to the occasion and with his permission we reproduce them here.

X-ray emission spectrography, while based on Moseley's work, as a generally useful analytical method had its genesis in the work of Friedman, Birks, and Brooks 30 years ago. The central theme of this conference, quantitative methods in X-ray spectrometric analy sis, and the large number of papers on that subject attest to the growth of the application and usefulness of X-ray emission. It is a privilege to have as an invited speaker Laverne Birks, one of the original group that put X-ray emission into analytical chemistry. Determination of elements above titanium in the periodic table was considered the province of X-ray fluorescence, and most of the early development was aimed at the analy sis of alloys. The papers in this volume on metals analysis accept most operational features as routine and have concentrated on the improved treatment of the observed data in order to convert them to more accurate results. As the treatment of matrix effects, geometry, and stability have been better understood, corrections have become routine. For most elements that are present in amounts greater than a few parts per million, determinations can now be done with accuracies rivaling wet methods. Trace quantities are being determined to lower and lower amounts, largely owing to improvement of equipment and development of concentration techniques. For most trace elements, X-ray spectrography has become the preferred analytical method. The develop ment of improved methods for separating signals from noise should lead to major reduc tions in minimum detection levels.

Years ago, Ray was sworn to silence. Now he's going to speak. Even if it kills him. Ray Watts is in a deep funk. His girlfriend Liz has abandoned him. So has the muse that inspired the art that supported him. If he doesn't come up with the next mortgage payment he's going to be out on the street. In a moment of desperation, he googles his ex-wife Susan. They haven't spoken in years. Now they never will-she died last year in a fiery car crash. Ray becomes obsessed with the years they spent together in a spiritual group- a time that drove him to the edge and destroyed their marriage. But Ray has a plan. When you're forbidden to speak, you end up with a lot of secrets. Juicy ones. So, he'll write a best-selling book about his time in the group and pay off the mortgage. And writing will get him out of his funk. It's what he'd always done-transmute his leaden troubles into the gold of art. But when a brick crashes through his window-the first in a series of creepy, anonymous threats-he realizes that someone really doesn't want him to write. They're determined to shut him up. For good.
What was it like to be John Lennon? What was it like to be the castoff child, the clown at school, and the middle-class suburban boy who pretended to be a working-class hero? How did it feel to have one of the most recognizable singing voices in the world, but to dislike it so much he always wanted to disguise it? Being John Lennon is not about the whitewashed Prince of Peace of Imagine legend--because that was only a small part of him. The John Lennon depicted in these pages is a much more kaleidoscopic figure, sometimes almost a collision of different characters. He was, of course, funny, often very funny. But above everything, he had attitude--his impudent style somehow personifying the aspirations of his generation to question authority. He could, and would, say the unsayable. Though there were more glamorous rock stars in rock history, even within the Beatles, it was John Lennon's attitude which caught, and then defined, his era in the most memorable way.
