Jón Egilsson var en uhyre produktiv skriver på 1400-tallets Island og fungerede bl.a. som arkivar på Hólar. Hans skriftsprog udmærker sig ikke mindst ved det meget markante indslag af norske træk, og man har i tidligere forskning diskuteret hvorvidt han har været nordmand eller islænding. Nærværende fremstilling har bl.a. forsøgt at bidrage til en afklaring af spørgsmålet ved en detaljeret analyse af en række skrift- og sprogforhold i de 27 originaldiplomer som man har bevaret fra hans hånd. Undersøgelsens primære mål har været at give en bred og detaljeret fremstilling af Jón Egilssons skrift og sprog baseret på studier af de palæografiske, ortografisk-fonologiske, morfologiske, orddannelsesmæssige, leksikalske og syntaktiske forhold som de manifesteres i de omtalte 27 originaldiplomer. For at kunne vurdere betydningen af de registrerede skrift- og sproghistoriske træk er de blevet sammenholdt med forholdene i andre islandske originaldiplomer fra perioden c1300-1450 (godt 300 diplomer). Undersøgelsen, der er baseret på et rigt annoteret (digitalt) korpus, når bl.a. frem til den konklusion at Islands mest betydningsfulde diplomskriver i første halvdel af 1400-tallet, og den første til at blive betitlet notarius publicus, efter alt at dømme har været nordmand.
