North Carolina Pattern Jury Instructions for Civil Cases, 2019 Edition
North Carolina Pattern Jury Instructions for Civil Cases (complete set, 3 volumes) are sample jury instructions organized by civil law topic. Trial judges use them for particular cases based on the relevant law and facts and share them with juries as guidance for reaching a decision in their cases. The instructions are created and compiled by The Pattern Jury Instruction Committee, made up of superior court judges assisted by the School of Government. The Committee creates annual supplements, based on changes in statutory and case law. The 2019 edition includes all recent annual supplements.

Wayne Miller

Winner of the 2022 Colorado Book Award for PoetryA boy asks his father what it means to die; a poet wonders whether we can truly know another’s thoughts; a man tries to understand how extreme violence and grace can occupy the same space. These are the questions Wayne Miller tackles in We the Jury: the hard ones, the impossible ones. From an academic dinner party disturbing in its crassness and disaffection to a family struggling to communicate gently the permanence of death, Miller situates his poems in dilemma. He faces moments of profound discomfort, grief, and even joy with a philosopher’s curiosity, a father’s compassion, and an overarching inquiry at the crossroads of ethics and art: what is the poet’s role in making sense of human behavior? A bomb crater–turned–lake “exploding with lilies,” a home lost during the late-aughts housing crash—these images and others, powerful and resonant, attempt to answer that question.Candid and vulnerable, Miller sits with us while we puzzle: we all wish we knew what to tell our children about death. But he also pushes past this and other uncertainties, vowing—and inviting us—to “expand our relationship / with Death,” and with every challenging, uncomfortable subject we meet. In the face of questions that seem impossible to answer, We the Jury offers not a shrug, but curiosity, transparency, a throwing of the arms wide.

Your worst nightmare: twelve jurors stand between you and a miscarriage of justice, and none of them have read this book. Few doubt that America's judicial system is one of the fairest, but we all agree it has problems. Sometimes it must enforce unjust laws, or administer laws in ways that seem inherently unfair. In criminal cases, each participant has his or her proper role: the government prosecutes, the lawyer for the accused defends, the judge referees, and the jury renders a decision. But few realize the extraordinary power juries have to take control of court proceedings gone wrong, to undo miscarriages of justice, and help preserve the liberties we hold so dear. Judicial history student and veteran juror Godfrey D. Lehman has compiled 12 cases from England and the U.S. in which jurors have taken it upon themselves, as a matter of conscience, to nullify or overturn horrific laws that endangered our freedoms. This is a wake-up call and a must read for historians, lawyers, judges, and, of course, all prospective jurors.

Clint Adams didn't have much use for a town like Candelaria. The townsmen were so chicken they let an outlaw gang clean out the bank, and couldn't even get up a posse to chase them. The Gunsmith would have liked to ride on and forget the place-if not for the promise he'd made to the sheriff's pretty widow.Tracking down the Pike brothers in Death Valley was the least of Clint's worries. Now he's got to take them to a necktie party in Carson City. But the Pikes have a plan of their own-to bust free and kill every man on the Candelaria jury. And the Gunsmith is first on their list

Murder by Jury: "If there is any place one would think himself safe, it would be in a jury room, locked up with fellow members of a jury, considering a verdict. Yet that, strangely enough, is the place Miss Sanborn chose for her victim. Naturally it takes an unusual bit of scheming on her part to make the murder plausible, and to set the stage so that the killer goes undetected long enough to fill the volume. Yet she manages it without false leads, or last-minute introductions of new characters. The big-jawed lady on the jury, who had almost dominated the scene until that moment, is actually--and cleverly--made away with by another member of the 12, and right under their eyes. Another female member of the same jury finally follows the course of logic which solves the mystery, and in so doing uncovers the real secret of the case upon whose settlement they were debating when murder entered their locked room. It's well told, and is interesting in the portrayal of the characters of the story." (Birmingham, Alabama, News, April 3, 1932)Murder on the Aphrodite: "A houseboat is a pretty fair place on which to stage a murder mystery, and Ruth Burr Sanborn uses such a locale to good advantage. When Mrs. Christine Van Wycke is killed while a psychologist is conducting an experiment to show that no persons notice the same things during a moment of stress, Bill Galleon finds himself wondering if Jane Bridge, or Jane Barron as he once knew her, has anything to do with the murder. Before the solution is reached, Bill has some bad moments about his suspicions, but naturally the romance ends happily and the murder is solved in an ingenious manner."
