The Believer's Brain

The Believer's Brain

Kenneth M. Heilman; Russell S. Donda

Psychology Press Ltd

About 90% of people have faith in a supreme being, but our yearning for the divine, and whatever it promises, involves a large divergence in mental states and behaviors. Some adhere to doctrine, supplication, and fastidious religious practices; others have a strong sense they are part of something greater and more universal. However, all religious and spiritual paths are mediated by complex brain networks. When different areas of the brain are stimulated, a person can have a variety of experiences, but there is no specific ‘God spot’ where stimulation enhances religiosity or spirituality. Functional brain imaging shows that there are specific areas of the brain that ‘light up’ when subjects perform certain religious activities, but imaging only provides anatomic correlations, not functional explanations. The Believer's Brain takes a step beyond these singular methodologies, providing converging evidence from a variety study methods of how humans’ brain networks mediate different aspects of religious and spiritual beliefs, feelings, actions, and experiences.Although the book reveals how our brain is the home to the religious and spiritual mind, understanding this gift will not diminish our spirituality or our love or our belief in a supreme being, but will increase appreciation of the apparatus that mediates these mental states.

Thousands of crop circles have been discovered and recorded in this generation, but no interpretative key has been available until now. This book, unique in crop circle literature, deciphers 1,700 circles as signs of a sequence of cornet strikes extending over the next 250 years which will contribute to repeated crop shortages. The extraterrestrial circle makers will be artificially directing these cosmic bodies to their impact areas, but before they begin they are revealing a large number of significant details about the whole process. Using the crop circles, plus biblical and personal prophecies, the author has derived approximate dates and locations for the global impacts. According to the author, directed comets have played an essential role in the evolution of life on this planet for millions, even billions of years. In fact, the general shape of most plants and animals originates from the comet shape, and the sexual reproductive cycle emulates the primordial act of a comet striking the earth. New and improved plant species to eliminate world hunger will become an integral part of the biosphere as the comets appear. Comet strikes have always been necessary for pollinating the flower of life, and creating new species, a new age and a new earth. The Heck Hypothesis is required reading for anyone seriously concerned with crop circles, potential asteroid or comet impacts, prophecy, and the intrinsic nature of life on this planet.

It has long been known that cognitive (thinking and reasoning) stimulation of the brain's cerebral cortex enhances the brain development of children and reduces degeneration with aging. In addition, competition enhances engagement. During long trips or while waiting, Heilman, a neurologist, along with his grandchildren, children, and son-in-law would play games. Studies of patients with brain injuries and functional brain imaging have revealed that different parts of the cerebral cortex perform different functions. We developed and selected games that we had fun playing, were competitive, did not need a computer or purchases, and stimulate different specific areas of the brain. In this book, we describe areas of the cerebral cortex and their functions. We then describe some games that may stimulate these areas, as well as provide enjoyment.

Donald Trump and the Branding of the American Presidency

This book argues that Donald Trump’s election and Presidency represent the triumph of marketing, branding and segmentation in American politics. An early emphasis on political marketing helped Trump secure the presidency, but his use of marketing sharply limited his presidency. President Trump’s political marketing strategy privileged emotion—particularly anger—over policy, constraining his ability to represent all Americans or engage in bipartisan negotiation in Congress. Rather than pushing forward realistic legislation and rallying for bipartisan support, Trump’s campaign and presidency focused on providing emotional gratification to his target audience, leading those outside this audience to ultimately feel unrepresented and unsettled, further fracturing the already divided electorate. Donald Trump and the Branding of the American Presidency considers the impact of this new age of political marketing through an extensive analysis of the Trump phenomenon and its implications for future elections.

Augustine's Conversion from Traditional Free Choice to "Non-free Free Will"
The consensus view asserts Augustine developed his later doctrines ca. 396 CE while writing Ad Simplicianum as a result of studying scripture. His early De libero arbitrio argued for traditional free choice refuting Manichaean determinism, but his anti-Pelagian writings rejected any human ability to believe without God giving faith. Kenneth M. Wilson's study is the first work applying the comprehensive methodology of reading systematically and chronologically through Augustine's entire extant corpus (works, sermons, and letters 386-430 CE), and examining his doctrinal development. The author explores Augustine's later theology within the prior philosophical-religious context of free choice versus deterministic arguments. This analysis demonstrates Augustine persisted in traditional views until 412 CE and his theological transition was primarily due to his prior Stoic, Neoplatonic, and Manichaean influences.
