“You’ll come a-waltzing” with this lively Australian folk song, part of a series of captivating picture books based on beloved songtales collected by John M. Feierabend. Chock-full of whimsical Australian vocabulary, Waltzing Matilda depicts the rugged adventures of a traveling worker (“swagman”) as he journeys across the Australian countryside, encountering both good fortune and trouble along the way. Adriana Wimler’s colorful illustrations capture the natural beauty of the Australian landscape and feature several indigenous Australian animals. See if you can spot them all! Like the other folk song picture books in the series, Waltzing Matilda includes a description of the song and its history, the music notation, and a link to a free MP3 download of the song, sung by Jill Trinka.

Waltzing Matilda Around Australia

Waltzing Matilda Around Australia

Vic Quayle

Filament Publishing

Australia is an ideal country for motorhoming, so Vic and Pam Quayle headed to Sydney, bought Matilda and headed out to see the country. Their travels took them to familiar tourist spots, such as Uluru, Kings Canyon, Great Ocean Road and the Whitsunday Isles, but also to other gems, such as the Bungle Bungles, Lake Eyre, and Tunnel Creek. They fed dolphins, watched a turtle laying eggs, and even handled a python. The wildlife was never far away and they saw kangaroo, dingo, wild camels and more. Matilda took them to deserted beaches and down lonely, desert tracks; they visited small towns and communities, and travelled through the remote Outback. They enjoyed terrific Australian hospitality, even celebrating Christmas in November with one family, and spent many an evening yarning round a campfire with a tinnie under the stars.Pam and Vic learned about the Long Paddock, the origins of QANTAS, how Australia nearly became a Dutch or French colony; they followed the original Ghan railway and watched sheep being shearing. Their hobbies were indulged as well. Pam went to the Australian Open Tennis, and Vic got involved with a car rally. On the road, they had all manner of adventures and overcame some problems with Matilda. During their travels, there was tragedy, the joy of an unexpected birth, even a stay in hospital. 'Waltzing Matilda Around Australia' is their story, but beware - having read it, you will want to go yourself.

“Greetings! I’m Matilda -- you may know me as Empress Matilda -- and I was so nearly the first Queen of England. William the Conqueror was my grandfather, and I should have succeeded my father, King Henry I. For many years I ruled in the southern counties of England and came very close to seizing the crown back from my cousin, Stephen. However, it was not to be. This is my story.”So begins this colourfully illustrated book telling the story of Empress Matilda, a medieval feminist who fought to gain her rightful place as Queen of England. With a foreword by Lindy Grant, Professor Emerita of Medieval History at the University of Reading, and an expert in Kingship and Queenship in the High Middle Ages.

Dobson's worldly possessions were ac couple of dirty dishwater shirts, a pair of frayed trousers, eating utensil; bent forks and a bone handled knife for eating, a blackened 'billy' for boiling water, a set of Boer war medals; not that Dobson ever went to war, and a battered felt hat that he wore to cover what was left of his grey hair. All this he carried in his swag; a long strip of calico wrapped up like a Christmas plum pudding that dangled at the end of a twisted gum tree branch. The Matilda Man is a story full of twists, turns and intrigue, capturing the starkness and mateship of the early days of the Australian outback. This is an intricate web of cunning, survival and betrayal in the harsh and unforgiving western landscape.A unique and masterful novel that will have you reaching for the next page...

Valerie arrived in Geneva to work for United Nations in 1948 and soon became a simultaneous interpreter in English, French and Spanish and a Russian translator. There were few conference interpreters in those days and they were treated like film stars, pampered and indulged, and very much in demand. The profession has changed enormously since then, especially recently with the advent of Covid-19 when conferences take place via Zoom. This book describes her life in the old days of cocktail parties, evening dress and jewellery. It also describes what it was like in Australia in 1979 when she came to live here, having fallen in love with an Australian UN delegate. In Melbourne she met the most handsome man she had ever encountered, who came to repair her gas stove. In Sydney she fell in love with the didgeridoo and in Darwin with Mindil Market and the sunset. She was dazzled by the beautiful, brightly coloured birds and the magnificent seascapes but found barbecue etiquette a challenge. In this book, she explains why being able to do headstands in the shower is important, why taking a bath is unhygienic, why flowers are sinful and unfaithful and why planes and boats are unable to travel faster.
