MS. found in a bottle/Manuscrit trouvé dans une bouteille: Bilingual edition/Édition bilingue
An unnamed narrator, estranged from his family and country, sets sail as a passenger aboard a cargo ship from Batavia (now known as Jakarta, Indonesia). Some days into the voyage, the ship is first becalmed then hit by a Simoon (a combination of a sand storm and hurricane) that capsizes the ship and sends everyone except the narrator and an old Swede overboard. Driven southward by the magical Simoon towards the South Pole, the narrator's ship eventually collides with a gigantic black galleon, and only the narrator manages to scramble aboard. Once the new ship arrives, the narrator finds outdated maps and useless navigational tools throughout the ship. Also, he finds it to be manned by elderly crewmen who are unable to see him; he steals writing materials from the captain's cabin to keep a journal (the "manuscript" of the title) which he resolves to cast into the sea. This ship too continues to be driven southward, and he notices the crew appears to show signs of hope at the prospect of their destruction as it reaches Antarctica. The ship enters a clearing in the ice where it is caught in a vast whirlpool and begins to sink into the sea.

Jeannie Jordan, or "Ms. Jeannie" as she was known to generations of children, was a renowned cook. She catered every party, hers was the home to visit at holidays, and every meal was much more than just food. Her home was full of cookbooks containing hundreds of recipes, and hundreds more were created and existed only in her memory. This cookbook is a collection of Ms. Jeannie's private recipes - the ones that she wrote down and kept in filing boxes on a shelf in her kitchen, the ones she typed up on a manual typewriter when she first started cooking for her own family, the ones that she gave out to friends and loved ones who requested them, the ones that she clipped out of magazines and modified to make her own. The recipes are recorded here as she kept them. Some have missing instructions. Some have vague quantities, some are hard to read due to years of grease stains and fingerprints. She never really followed the recipes exactly anyway, so experiment and enjoy the results. This cookbook was created for the many people who have asked for copies of Ms. Jeannie's recipes. Any and all profits are being donated to the Sonshine Learning Center Scholarship Fund at First Baptist Church in Southern Pines, NC in her name. The revised edition contains an additional 40 recipes and minor corrections.

I love to cook with children I am a teacher and twelve years ago, I started teaching kindergarten. I decided that I wanted to teach my class about the world. So, I decided the best way to do that would be through cooking. They loved it Teaching the children to cook was so much fun The children often shared places they had been and food they had eaten. The children were learning so many things when cooking. They learned about the country, how to work together, use their math skills and most importantly patience for the finished product. The other thing that I discovered as time went on, was how the children were paying attention to the smells of the different recipes and how they remembered who they were with and where they were. This was so exciting for me. I had read that the sense of smell which is created in the olfactory bulb, which is in the limbic system of the brain, is closely associated with memory and feeling which is sometimes called the emotional brain. Smells can bring memories and powerful responses almost instantly. Because the olfactory bulb has a close access to the amygdala, which processes emotion and the hippocampus which is responsible for associative learning. The first time you encounter a smell you link it to an event, person, or moment. The next time you encounter the smell you elicit the memory or mood. This is so exciting for both myself and my students Watching this happen, gave me the inspiration to write a series of children s book to teach children about the world through the magic of food. When children are immersed in culture they learn more meaningfully and remember always. My vision is that all children will want to learn about the world through cooking.
