African Energy Road to Recovery

African Energy Road to Recovery

Africa’s oil and gas industry is facing extraordinary circumstances. An ongoing energy transition and new efforts to decarbonize the world are weighing on oil demand. The shale revolution is exacerbating these pressures. And of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has wrought havoc on markets around the world, accelerating and intensifying existing trends.External headwinds are forcing African petroleum producers to re-examine their strategies. Conventional petroleum resources here should be globally competitive, but growth has lagged because of conditions above the ground, not below. Restrictive fiscal regimes, inefficient and carbon-intensive production, and difficulties in doing business are preventing the industry from reaching its full potential. As companies delay projects and cut costs, planned capital expenditure in 2020-2021 has fallen from $90 billion pre-COVID-19, to $60 billion now. To remain competitive, African producers and governments must adapt. But how can they do it when the economic order is being remade? The Road to Recovery addresses these challenges head-on, detailing all of the major challenges facing African oil and gas stakeholders, as well as workable solutions that will keep the industry on a strong and stable growth path. Again and again, our oil and gas sector has proven its resilience and adaptability. The world still needs oil and gas, and Africa still holds enormous untapped potential. The African Energy Chamber will remain a committed partner of choice for the industry as we advance into an uncertain future.

This book reviews the chemical and biological properties of Artemisia amygdalina Decne, a critically endangered and endemic plant species in the the high-altitude Kashmir Himalayas, which has a high pharmacological potential. It describes the bioactivity-guided isolation of its chemical compounds, their characterization using spectroscopic methods and the development of a simple and reliable RP-HPLC method for the simultaneous quantification of the isolated constituents. The authors discuss the potential pharmacological activities of A. amygdalina, such as antioxidant, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory and antidiabetic effects, and pave the way for future research.

This book demonstrates the transformative power of optimization algorithms in advancing ocean wave energy. It blends theory with practice to explain how computational optimization can dramatically enhance the efficiency and performance of wave energy converters - devices that harness the power of ocean waves for renewable energy. The books illustrations and detailed tables provide visual and comparative insights into the interactions between various algorithmic approaches and wave energy systems, helping make complex engineering concepts accessible to non-specialists. With real-world case studies and innovative perspectives on algorithmic optimization in wave farm design, this book serves as a comprehensive gateway to understanding not only the fundamentals of wave energy but also the cutting-edge techniques steering the field toward a more sustainable future.

This monograph covers the topic of Wireless for Machine Learning (ML). Although the general intersection of ML and wireless communications is currently a prolific field of research that has already generated multiple publications, there is little review work on Wireless for ML. As data generation increasingly takes place on devices without a wired connection, ML related traffic will be ubiquitous in wireless networks. Research has shown that traditional wireless protocols are highly inefficient or unsustainable to support ML, which creates the need for new wireless communication methods. This monograph gives an exhaustive review of the state-of-the-art wireless methods that are specifically designed to support ML services over distributed datasets. Currently, there are two clear themes within the literature, analog over-the-air computation and digital radio resource management optimized for ML. A comprehensive introduction to these methods is presented, reviews are made of the most important works, open problems are highlighted and application scenarios are discussed.
