Nicholas Kaldor and the Real World

Nicholas Kaldor and the Real World

Marjorie Shepherd Turner

M.E. Sharpe
1993
sidottu
First Published in 1994. Nicholas Kaldor was born in Hungary in 1908 and died as Baron Kaldor of Newnham in the City of Cambridge, England, in 1986. The years between revealed no hint of scandal or psychological problems that might make Kaldor the subject of a novel. His life was, instead, a straight line of growth and achievement, of intellectual enjoyment and strong values. Kaldor's struggles were intellectual-namely, his efforts to comprehend the economics of the real world, to fit this understanding into economic theory, and to convince his fellow citizens and economists of the accuracy of his perceptions. Kaldor forces us to ponder what the relationship between economic theory and practice should be.
Nicholas of Lyra, Literal Commentary on Galatians
Though little-known today, Nicholas of Lyra's commentaries are arguably among the most widely-read and influential commentaries of all time. For more than two hundred years, from the time of their composition, well into the Reformation era, they were copied and recopied, printed and reprinted, as an indispensable guide to the meaning of scripture. Naumann presents here a complete translation of Lyra's literal commentary on Galatians in English for the first time, with a freshly-edited Latin text, and provides ample notes on its significance in relation to the works of previous authors.
Nicholas County, Kentucky Property Tax Lists, 1800-1811
Tax lists are an excellent resource often overlooked by researchers. Tax lists provide researchers with the names of persons present in the county at the time the tax was assessed along with a comparison of name spelling. The first section of this valuable research aid covers four tax years (1800, 1801, 1809, and 1811) and includes: the location of properties, the name of the person who first claimed or provided surety, which type of land was taxed, and property value. Entries include year, person, location and water course, and entered/surveyed, as well as number of voters, white males, slaves and horses. The second section compares tax records for eleven years that fall within two census periods. The third section shows an expanded census for 1810, and the fourth section offers the deed book indices of the period for name comparison. An index to tax payers and a map of Nicholas County add to the value of this work.

Nicholas Kahn / Richard Selesnick: The Apollo Prophecies
The Apollo Prophecies depicts, in one extravagantly long tritone panorama, an imagined expedition of 1960s American astronauts who, land on the moon and discover a lost mission of Edwardian-era astronauts who greet them as long-awaited gods. These wildly inventive staged photographs, evidence of events that never happened, playfully question the role of photography in our sense of historical truth. Equal parts Jules Verne and Stanley Kubrick, with a touch of William Blake, the panoramic moonscape literally unfolds in multiple episodes that intermingle artifacts from the fearless era of early-twentieth-century exploration with space age gadgetry. Kahn and Selesnick have combined real-life locations, miniature models and full-scale props of their own devising to produce a dramatic narrative where space-suit-clad astronauts (most portrayed by the artists themselves, with a few similarly clad monkeys and elephants) reappear as events continue across the page. This is an Apollo lunar mission at once dreamlike, oddly familiar and utterly convincing. Its ingenious package includes the 19-foot long two-sided panorama, (58 pages when folded) and a 12-page booklet whose mind-bending narrative is illustrated with four-color mixed-media drawings. The limited edition also includes a signed and numbered lenticular image in an edition of 250 copies (viewed from one angle, it reveals an austronaut from the Edwardian era, from the other it shows an austronaut from the sixties) and a twenty-minute DVD documenting the munar mision.
