Race in an American Life

Race in an American Life

RACE IN AN AMERICAN LIFE BY R P ROGERSRace-a four letter word written in the fabric of the American character. No other letters or group of letters compels the incredible range of emotional responses as does R-A-C-E. RACE IN AN AMERICAN LIFE is the chronicle of one person's interface with America's struggle searching for its sense of being and its soul. I am the author, R P Rogers and RACE IN AN AMERICAN LIFE is my personal trial with the ongoing racial conflict and ambiguities. This is the saga of an American who has charged, strolled, meandered, and been dragged through the aftermath of The Civil War, Reconstruction, and the ongoing Civil Rights Movement. It is very up close and personal-it is a life.RACE IN AN AMERICAN LIFE is about my life intertwined with the reality, consequences, and gargantuan struggle of America's struggle with race. This is the account beginning with a boy born in rural South Carolina during the lingering depression going into WW11 and continuing through the turbulence of the nineteen sixties. My attitude on race was formed working side by side with black and white, in the searing Carolina sun, at a very young age. This book weaves all parts of my life with the events of WW11, Atom Bomb, especially Vietnam, and the protest of the nineteen sixties. Whether front and center, or lurking in the background, the racial component is always there. Go there with me-it is more than a story-it is a life.

This textbook offers a fresh approach to digital signal processing (DSP) that combines heuristic reasoning and physical appreciation with sound mathematical methods to illuminate DSP concepts and practices. It uses metaphors, analogies and creative explanations, along with examples and exercises to provide deep and intuitive insights into DSP concepts. Practical DSP requires hybrid systems including both discrete- and continuous-time components. This book follows a holistic approach and presents discrete-time processing as a seamless continuation of continuous-time signals and systems, beginning with a review of continuous-time signals and systems, frequency response, and filtering. The synergistic combination of continuous-time and discrete-time perspectives leads to a deeper appreciation and understanding of DSP concepts and practices. • For upper-level undergraduates • Illustrates concepts with 500 high-quality figures, more than 170 fully worked examples, and hundreds of end-of-chapter problems, more than 150 drill exercises, including complete and detailed solutions • Seamlessly integrates MATLAB throughout the text to enhance learning

Robin Hood Was Right

Last year, Americans donated $150 billion to charity. Giving has never been more popular, possible—or, for many, more confusing. There are oceans of need, mountains of requests, and often little time for the consideration needed to give thoughtfully and effectively. "Change, not charity!" is this book’s enthusiastic theme. Long-time activists and givers, authors Chuck Collins and Pam Rogers show that traditional charity most often reinforces the status quo and maintains the dynamics of dependency and control. The progressive ethic of giving endorsed in this book, on the other hand, offers detailed ways to address the root causes of societal problems. With numerous organizational listings and hundreds of helpful suggestions, Robin Hood Was Right is a fun, user-friendly guide for the socially conscious giver, whether one is able to give annually $500 or $5,000,000.

This is a critical study of the key provisions of the law relating to the conduct of combat in armed conflicts on land, illustrated by reference to problems that have arisen during recent conflicts. It is an updated version of the successful first edition but with two additional chapters, dealing with rules relating to the conduct of combat against members of the enemy armed forces and in internal armed conflicts. The approach adopted is to take a proposition of the law of war, examine its historical origins and current exposition, deal with problems of interpretation and application, especially in the light of recent conflicts, and reach conclusions about how it should be applied in practice.

This completely revised and updated eighth edition serves as the definitive text for courses in which the United Nations is either the focus or a central component. Built around three critical themes in international relations (peace and security, human rights and humanitarian affairs, and sustainable human development) the eighth edition of The United Nations and Changing World Politics guides students through the seven turbulent decades of UN politics. This new edition is fully revised to incorporate recent developments on the international stage, including new peace operations in Mali and the Central African Republic; ongoing UN efforts to manage the crises in Libya, Syria, and Iraq; the Iran Nuclear Deal; and the new Sustainable Development Goals. The authors discuss how international law frames the controversies at the UN and guides how the UN responds to violence and insecurity, gross violations of human rights, poverty, underdevelopment, and environmental degradation. Students of all levels will learn that the UN is a complex organization, comprised of three interactive entities that cooperate and also compete with each other to define and advance the UN's principles and purposes.

This collection of essays presents an authoritative and penetrating comment on the use of the computer in teaching law. The authors have taught and developed instructional materials for many years; they are intimately familiar with the substance of the law, as well as with the teaching techniques that have proven successful. Among the subjects discussed are the development of law-related programmed workbooks, predecessors to computer-aided instruction (CAI); research findings and their implications for the design of law-related CAI exercises; advantages and limitations of CAI programs in law; and attempts to measure the effectiveness of CAI as a method of law instruction. The authors outline the process involved in writing and publishing computer-aided instruction in the field of law and describe current experiments through which several exercises in law are being cooperatively used via a computer network, EDUNET.

From the profound to the playful. Such is the range of offerings that three balladeers bring you in this book. Hear what they say about what they sing: "One can only attempt with all his heart to write what there is. The beauty and power, if they come through, are in the reality and in the eye of the beholder. How can the window pane take "credit" for the view? In fact, the whole art, in my case, is in getting out of the way and letting the clear light that fills me with awe assemble itself on the page." - Roger T. Swedlow "I maintain a reactive journal. That is, I write when I am stirred by experiences along my way through this world. Here find twelve offerings that give voice to my encounters with life, pain, death, the earth, and deity." - Faith W. Lucas "Come, beguile away your cares with these literary wares: affirmations, encouraging words, glints of humor, truths encased in brief phrases, a riddle or two: issue of my variegated minstrelsy." - Jon P. Swedlow

The historical and cultural aspects of the Cold War have been much studied, yet its physical manifestations in England – its buildings and structures – have remained largely unknown. To the great landscape historian WG Hoskins writing in the 1950’s they were profoundly alien: “England of the … electric fence, of the high barbed wire around some unmentionable devilment…. Barbaric England of the scientists, the military men, and the politicians”. Now these survivors of the Cold War are, in their turn, disappearing fast, like medieval monasteries and bastioned forts before them – only with more limited scope for regeneration and reuse. This book is the first to look at these monuments to the Cold War. It is heavily illustrated with photographs of the sites as they survive today, archive photographs (many previously unpublished), modern and historic air photographs, site and building plans, and specially commissioned interpretative drawings. It also endeavours look at the installations within the military and political context of what was one of the defining phenomena of the late 20th century.

This book combines the knowledge, skills, and risks taken by a young entrepreneur with those acquired by a senior entrepreneur. Dr. Harrington is well-known for his work with many organizations around the world at refining and improving their manufacturing and business processes, organizational structure, and strategic planning. The two authors have combined their experiences to define the process to roadmaps that minimize the risk of failure and cycle time required to go from concept to an established profitable organization. This newly defined entrepreneurial process provides a breakthrough in thinking on activity-by-activity root to entrepreneurial success.
