The name Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is inseparable from his unrivalled chairs, which helped Danish design to achieve its international breakthrough. Every design fan has his or her favorite from among Wegner’s approximately five hundred creations. Today, there is a hardly a glossy interior design magazine that does not include an illustration of the elegant China Chair (1943) or the Y Chair (1950), and even John F. Kennedy sat on his Round Chair, which is now simply called The Chair (1949). Trained as a furniture maker, Wegner usually made his prototypes himself by hand, using traditional joinery techniques such as tongue-and-groove or finger joints. In the process he pushed the limitations of wood, giving his designs an unmatched elegance. His sense of humor did not fall by the wayside, either, as evidenced by his splendid Peacock Chair (1947) or the masculine Ox Chair (1960), that latter of which is available with or without horns. Basis für dieses Buch sind die aufgezeichneten Erinnerungen der Charlotte von Gottberg, geb. Kniep. Aufgewachsen ist sie auf dem Bauernhof ihrer Eltern in Ostpreußen. Gegen den Willen ihres Vaters heiratete sie den adligen Curt von Gottberg, vormals Gardeoffizier später dann SS-Offezier, mit dem sie vier Söhne hat. Der älteste stirbt 1936. Sie lebt in Villen und Schlössern an verschiedenen Orten bis ihr Mann am Ende des zweiten Weltkrieges den Freitod wählte. Danach verbringt sie ihr Leben als Witwe in tiefer Armut. Trotzdem schaffte sie es, drei Söhne aufzuziehen und für ihre gute Ausbildung zu sorgen. Im Dezember 1982 starb sie in einem Altersheim in Hamburg.

Due to numerous achievements in the last years, solid-state NMR has evolved a potent tool for structural characterization of biomolecules. Not relying on single crystals or solubility, the technique particularly focuses on fibrillar and membrane proteins, which are difficult to characterize otherwise. Despite this enormous potential, numerous difficulties unsolved to date demand for further technical and methodological reworking. Among these, the achievable signal to noise and resolution are the most prominent limits. Whereas a series of limitations is induced by strong dipolar interactions among protons even under fast MAS (Magic Angle Spinning), a (partial) dilution of the proton content by deuterons bears a number of spectroscopic advantages. These are e.g. direct 1H detection with an excellent resolution, accessibility of long-range distance restraints, and proton based dynamics and surface accessibility determination. Besides, relaxation for various coherences is significantly decreased, making solution-NMR like multi-dimensional experiments for peak assignment etc. possible. The features of a dilute protonation explored in this work have lead to 12 peer-reviewed publications.

This book challenges widespread academic and media claims that Russia and Belarus are unwavering allies or that Russia has unquestioned control over Belarus. Instead, Belarus plays at least four different roles within Russian foreign policy. First, Belarus is sometimes a conduit for Russian power projection towards Western enemies. Second, Belarus is sometimes a supporter in Russian attempts to centralize the post-Soviet space around itself. Third, Belarus is sometimes itself an object of Russian economic ambition or even greed. Fourth, however, Belarus also presents a source of danger and vulnerability to Russian physical and, perhaps more importantly, ontological security. Many scholars have pointed out the historical and contemporary importance of Ukraine for Russian self-understanding and external projection. Belarus, too, has such importance. Whether it be as a millennium-old "grey zone" between Russia and what it saw as its ideological and military enemies, or whether it be as the place where the "most perfect" Soviet republic was created, the Belarusian lands today present themselves to Russia simultaneously as open to the passage of alien subversive influences and as a place claiming to be the real heir to Soviet victory and to Slavic purity - both mantles otherwise claimed by Russia.
