Swiss photographer Rene Burri (1933-2014) has been wherever history had been played out. A member of the famous Magnum Photos cooperative since 1955, he photographed in the Middle East in the 1950s and 1960s, recording the Six-Days and Yom Kippur Wars, as well as the Vietnam War during the 1960s. His many travels took him to Japan and China, across Europe and the Americas to report sharply many of the 20th century's major events. His extraordinary sense for people and their personalities helped him create portraits of celebrities such as architects Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Luis Barragan; or artists Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, and Jean Tinguely. His iconic picture of Che Guevara with cigar, shot in 1963, is one of the world's most famous and widely reproduced photographic portraits ever. Burri had a close relationship with Lausanne's Musee de l' Elysee and in 1987 the museum staged a first exhibition of his work, entitled The Ruins of the Future, followed by his first major retrospective in 2004. The museum also hosts the Fondation Rene Burri, which the artist established in 2013 as a home for his estate. Published to coincide with a new exhibition at Musee de l'Elysee in spring 2020, Rene Burri: An Eye Explosion draws from this vast collection. It brings together for the first time Burri's entire body of work, photographic and non-photographic. Black-and-white and colour photographs feature alongside previously unpublished archival documents as well as book designs, exhibition projects, travel diaries, collages, watercolours, and other multiple objects he collected. It offers a new, multi-faceted and uniquely intimate view of one of the world's greatest photo reporters.

Over the course of a half-century, the photographs of Ren Burri (1933-2014) have tracked the turning points, triumphs and crises of the twentieth century. Whether it was the 15-year-old Burri's portrait of Winston Churchill or his later portrayals of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Richard Nixon, Anwar as-Sadat or Muammar al-Gaddafi, all have lodged themselves in the collective consciousness. Removed from sensationalism yet no less striking are Burri's images of the theater of war, of people suffering in poverty and calamity. And as if to hold such horrors in check, Burri turned his lens with equal intensity to the spheres of beauty and creativity--to the landscapes of Latin America, to great artists such as Picasso and Maria Callas, and to luminaries of architecture such as Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. This two-volume collection offers an extensive compilation of images from the eminent photojournalist.

René de Saussure and the theory of word formation

René de Saussure and the theory of word formation

Stephen Anderson; Louis De Saussure

Language Science Press
2018
sidottu
This volume presents two works elaborating a general theory of words and their structure written by Ren de Saussure, younger brother of Ferdinand de Saussure. Although originating in Ren de Saussure's concerns for the structure of Esperanto, these essays are clearly intended to articulate a general account of word formation in natural language. They appear here in the French original with facing English translations, accompanied by some remarks on Ren de Saussure's life and followed by essays on the Esperantist background of his analysis (by Marc van Oostendorp), the contemporary relevance of his morphological theory (by Stephen Anderson), and the semantic theory of words underlying his analysis (by Louis de Saussure). These two works have remained essentially unknown to the community of scholars in general linguistics since their publication in 1911 and 1919, respectively, although Esperantists have been aware of them. They develop in quite explicit form a theory of what would later be called morphemic analysis, based primarily on data from French (with some material from German and English, as well as occasional examples from other Indo-European languages). In its fundamental aspect, Ren 's view of word formation differed significantly from that of his brother, who saw the structure of complex words as revealed not through their decomposition into smaller 'atomic' units but rather in the relations between words, relations which could be presented in analogical form and which anticipate rule-based theories of morphological structure. The contrast between the two brothers' views thus anticipates basic issues in current theorizing about word structure.
Rene Gonzalez Architects: Not the Little House on the Prairie
"Gonzalez has lately emerged as one of Miami’s most influential young architects." –Raul A. Barreneche, the New York Times Specializing in the design of museum and gallery spaces, hospitality, commercial retail and residential projects, Miami-based Rene Gonzalez Architects also endeavors to develop solutions to rising sea levels in coastal communities. This volume compiles drawings and photographs of a residence on Prairie Avenue in Miami designed by the firm in 2018. Inspired by red mangrove trees, the dwelling hovers entirely above the ground plane. A lush garden covers most of the site and absorbs enormous quantities of water. Charles Renfro celebrates the building thus: "Is this blown-up modernism, a house made of fragments and gaps, also a new gay architecture? If so, it is but one of the many ways this compact complex house performs, one that in so many ways pulls modernism forward into a brave new world of sensuality, sexuality and lifestyle. Within it, social progress has found a new architecture."
