Who says politics isn't sexy? PATRICK BLANCO wants nothing more than a chance at the presidency, and he's willing to do anything to get it. At just thirty-eight-years-old, Patrick is already one of the youngest and most successful senators in the country, but he's destined for more. Much more. When the cold winds of the New Hampshire primary blow in his favor, his campaign kicks into overdrive. So does his love life. ALEXANDRA JONES knows that working on Patrick's election could be the job she needs to prove herself in Washington, DC. Win with him, and her life will change forever. She just didn't count on something---her growing attraction to her boss. Pretty soon, she can't deny it. Neither can he. As Patrick and his team head to South Carolina, life gets complicated. This is politics, after all. Secrets don't say secret for long. Everything has a price. Everyone has a motive. There's no time for love. Or is there?

Explores racial/ethnic identity development as a life-long process of negotiating self, context, and others’ perceptions and behaviors from early adolescence to adulthood.Guided by early foundational and recent compelling theories on race/ethnicity and identity development across the lifespan, Celina Chatman Nelson, Stephen C. Peck, Oksana Malanchuk, and Jacquelynne S. Eccles provide a detailed analysis of their collected research on the Maryland Adolescent Development in Context Study (MADICS) to demonstrate the diversity of racial/ethnic identity profiles and how they change over time. MADICS began with nearly 1500 7th graders and their families in the early 1990s, following many of them into their early 30s at the turn of the millennium. Using mixed-method research involving case studies and interview data, this book demonstrates racial/ethnic identity as multidimensional, contextualized, and idiosyncratic, within a bidirectional, iterative, and nuanced process. Through the presentation of their research findings on Prince George’s County youth, the authors encourage families, schools, and communities to have an open dialogue about race/ethnicity to promote active reflection not only among developing youth, but also within the world we live in today.

The authors discuss the opportunities for supporting SEL under ESSA, the standards of evidence under ESSA, and SEL interventions that meet the standards of evidence and might be eligible for federal funds through ESSA.

Shares the voices of students speaking out against the failures of urban education "Our schools suck." This is how many young people of color call attention to the kind of public education they are receiving. In cities across the nation, many students are trapped in under-funded, mismanaged and unsafe schools. Yet, a number of scholars and of public figures have shifted attention away from the persistence of school segregation to lambaste the values of young people themselves. Our Schools Suck forcefully challenges this assertion by giving voice to the compelling stories of African American and Latino students who attend under-resourced inner-city schools, where guidance counselors and AP classes are limited and security guards and metal detectors are plentiful—and grow disheartened by a public conversation that continually casts them as the problem with urban schools. By showing that young people are deeply committed to education but often critical of the kind of education they are receiving, this book highlights the dishonesty of public claims that they do not value education. Ultimately, these powerful student voices remind us of the ways we have shirked our public responsibility to create excellent schools. True school reform requires no less than a new civil rights movement, where adults join with young people to ensure an equal education for each and every student.
