Sandy soils cover approximately 900 million ha worldwide, and there are extensive areas of sandy soils under cultivation. Most sandy soils have high water permeability, low water-holding capacity, low ability to retain and exchange nutrients, weakly developed soil structure and they may be prone to erosion by wind. As irrigation is required for obtaining good crop yields, there is a risk of substantial leaching of nutrients and pesticides, and ground water depletion. Due to global pressure on land resources, marginal soils such as sandy soils are taken into production or cultivated more intensely. Sandy soils – as a group of soils with specific characteristics and ecological limitations – have received limited research attention. This books presents the main papers from the Global Conference on Sandy Soils which was held in June 2023 in Madison, USA. This book focuses on novel and exciting aspects of research on sandy soils which is presented into three sections: Distributionand Assessment, Soil Carbon and Soil Health, and Water and the Environment. It presents a global glimpse on what recent progress has been in the study of sandy soil and their properties and management.

Dedicated to American artist Sandy Skogland, this book accompanies her first anthological exhibition at CAMERA in Turin, Italy. It retraces the entire path of the artist interweaving her biography with her professional progress, documented with the reproduction of her entire oeuvre. From the first photographic series produced in the mid-seventies to the great compositions of the early eighties, up until the brand new Winter, which the artist has been working on for over ten years: visionary and surreal works, which arise from the meticulous construction of a set that the artist then photographs, in a process that explains the rarefied production of the artist and the peculiarity of her visual path, merging installation, sculpture and photography.
Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature
Enchanting Nature is published on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition presented at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, USA, from September 11 through February 1, 2026. The publication’s text and images expand on the breadth of Skoglund’s artistic practice as a sculptor, installation artist, and photographer. The clash of culture and nature is eternal, an ongoing struggle that characterizes some of humanity’s epic concerns. The conflict between the manmade world and the natural environment and the paradoxes this conflict creates are a central focus in the work of the artist. This dialogue exists behind a facade of lush color and form that defines Skoglund’s distinctive, dream-like images. Her work expresses reality as perception, a form of psychological truth. In the visual turmoil of the compositions there is a striking sense of urgency and familiarity. In this chaos, as if gasping for breath, Skoglund’s work is about drowning in the super-saturated consciousness of contemporary life. Enchanting Nature includes the artist’s seminal installations—Revenge of the Goldfish and Radioactive Cats—alongside the never-before exhibited installation, Fresh Hybrid, from 2008. Both the publication and exhibition Enchanting Nature showcase work from throughout the artist’s career, emphasizing ongoing themes in her art including nature, the environment, and interspecies kinship. Skoglund’s recent series, The Outtakes, revisits the artist’s prior photoshoots to recover alternative shots originally rejected as mistakes.
Sandy Beaches as Ecosystems
What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.

Sandy Denny- A People’s History tells the story of the woman heralded by her peers as Britain’s greatest ever female singer. Sandy Denny is the only vocalist apart from Robert Plant to appear on a Led Zeppelin album. But her duet on ‘The Battle Of Evermore’ is just one of many achievements by the woman who was twice voted ‘Best British Female Singer’ (in 1970 & 1971) by readers of Melody Maker magazine. Sandy brought an air of magic to the stage every time she sang, whether as a member of Fairport Convention, with her band Fotheringay or as a solo singer. This book captures memories of those performances and pays tribute to her beautiful voice, to her endearing personality and to her exceptional songwriting talent. Sandy’s song ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes?’ has been covered by more than 100 artists, and her music is still being discovered and interpreted by artists in the almost half a century since her untimely death in 1978 at a tragically young age. Compiled by Sandy’s daughter, Georgia Rose Lucas, and fully approved by the estate of Sandy Denny, this book contains a wealth of memories and memorabilia. Contributors include: Richard Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, Mary Black, Barbara Dickson, Joe Boyd, Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Linda Thompson, Joan as Policewoman, Richard Digance, Iain Matthews, Christine Collister, Gordon Giltrap, Aine Furey, Chris Blackwell & Julianne Regan.
