Life today poses many questions, both in our personal lives and in our participation in nature and the broader culture. We often focus on the outer needs for social, political, technological, or environmental change. However, can we really meet the challenges around us without also attending to our inner life and to our own evolving biography as it re ects and informs the outer world? This book starts from the premise that each of our lives expresses uniqueness of spiritual intention within the unfolding of universal rhythms and possibilities. Can we wake up to the developmental opportunities offered to us through different life phases? Are we able to step out of the narrowness of the dualistic nature-nurture argument and experience that we are both more than our genetic composition and more than a product of the social and educational influences that have shaped us? Can we come to appreciate the learning that our "I" has received through heredity, ethnicity, schooling, and gender without losing a sense of our true individuality? Waking up to our unique self as it grows through interaction with the world and other human beings helps us recognize the significance we all play in one another's biographies and in the unfolding of our larger human story. Why on Earth? invites us to explore our own meaning-filled life journey, to bring conscious attention to how we go our path, so that we may more freely perceive our possibilities and our responsibilities along the way of our personal and shared becoming. We should face that world not with our opinions but with our questions, indeed in a questioning mood and attitude. -- Rudolf Steiner, The Fifth Gospel"Who, or perhaps what, is she?" Signe Eklund Schaefer poses this question as she leads us into a heartfelt exploration of the great mystery that is Sophia. Her book does not take an academic or theological path but one that is personal and full of warmth and genuine interest in discovery that goes toward living reality, well beyond mere names and fixed ideas. As Schaefer says, she decided to "forego the idea of a straightforward narrative and instead interweave musings, poems, saved quotations, and other assorted notes from my many years of living with questions about and to her." The author tells us, Questions of inner growth, of spiritual striving, of how to bear the suffering in the world without going under, and perhaps most of all, of how to love, often present themselves surrounded by veils. In acknowledging a question, the veil may begin to shift. Our questions matter; bringing them to consciousness, exploring them with others, waiting with an open heart for the spirit to speak--this is the ongoing work of unveiling.Sophia is rightly seen as the living, moving being of universal wisdom and the archetypal feminine, but Schaefer helps us to see her as more--as an expression of what humanity must rightfully become.Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing. -- Arundhati Roy

The "social art" of biography work has grown from the insights of Rudolf Steiner's spiritual science--insights that have proved useful in identifying and exploring the archetypal rhythms and milestones of human life. The most well-known, even obvious, of these are the roughly seven-year rhythms of early childhood, childhood, and adolescence, culminating in the transition to adulthood around the age of twenty-one. But this and other archetypal rhythms continue to unfold throughout life, perhaps more subtly and certainly in the most differentiated and individualized of ways. These have often been explored, especially as they pertain to the "active years" of adulthood. But less has been written about the so-called elder years. This volume seeks to remedy that.Written and edited by longtime students and practitioners of anthroposophic biography work, all of whom have completed at least ten cycles of seven-years, this unique volume aims to address, first hand, the joys and sorrows, triumphs and realities, of these years, when the ripe fruits of a life truly lived swell with seeds for the future.

Are you highly sensitive? Empathetic? Empathic? An empath? The Space in Between captures the essence of what it means to live as an empath - and demonstrates how an ordinary person can open up to living an extraordinary life. Longtime spiritual counselor and seasoned guide Signe Myers Hovem takes readers on a journey through her life, demystifying empathic receptivity and revealing that it is not a 'gift' or 'power' but a feature of one's sensory perception and intuition, an ability that allows us to live in extended communication with nature and humanity. She elucidates the difference between having empathic traits and sensitivities and actually having the skills and abilities of an empath. And she explores the five different landscapes and fields of consciousness that provided her with insight and movement as she traveled her own path of discovery - Field of Reflection, Field of Definition, Field of Sensing, Field of Awareness and Experience, and Field of Mystery - helping readers to dismantle long-held beliefs, illuminating the intentional path towards balance and belonging, and encouraging us all to rediscover what it means to live a truly authentic life. Written for persons who identify as highly sensitive, as empathic, or as empaths, The Space in Between is a road map to cultivating both self-awareness and connectivity with the greater world.

In Textual Criticism and Sacred Texts: A Comparative Method, Signe Cohen looks at the text-critical scholarship on sacred texts across disciplines. She traces the development of the genealogical method and discusses its role in textual criticism today. The book examines the applicability of traditional text-critical methods to oral texts as well as the roles of translations and commentaries in textual criticism. Cohen then turns to the under-theorized question of the relationship between religion and text-critical scholarship and outlines ethics of textual criticism applied to religious texts. She then discusses how new digital technologies will change the textual scholarship of the future and proposes new ways that scholars can collaborate across sub-disciplines.
Carterhaugh - The story of Tam Lin: Historical novel based on a Sottish ballad
The historical novel Carterhaugh is based on the old Scottish ballad "Tam Lin", which tells how the young, handsome Tam Lin is kidnapped by the Queen of Elves in the forest of Carterhaugh. Jane (Janet), who is expecting his child, rescues him and saves him from being sacrificed to hell. The story is usually set in the period shortly after the Norman Conquest and is about their noble families. However, the characteristics of the plot suggest to me a far earlier age. Fairies and elves date from the Celtic period, when the old Celtic gods were pushed into the background during Christianization. Such beings were then transposed and reinterpreted, and in these guises were preserved in the traditional legends and stories. Also, the mention of hell seems to me to be a Christian interpretation of the Celtic Otherworld. In addition, many well-known Scottish families have claimed the tale of Tam Lin (Lynn, Munroe, Dunbar, Douglas, Lord of Foulis), but none can be unequivocally associated with it - suggesting the story is much older. The ballad ends with Jane winning Tam Lin, but what happened after that, and what was the background? Who was Tam Lin really? Who was the Elf Queen, and who were the people of Carterhaugh? I try to offer an answer set at the end of the ninth century, when the kingdom of the Celtic Gododdin, formerly conquered and suppressed by the Germanic Anglo-Saxons, was liberated by the Scottish troops and annexed to the Kingdom of Scotland (then called Alba). In addition, I have added a Welsh language pronunciation, as it is likely that it was quite similar to the Gododdin language at the time.
Myrddyn: The original Story of Merlin the Magician Historical novel
The historian, artist and author Signe Anita Fuchs has published several works about the Celtic period, including several historical novels, and has painted numerous oil paintings and watercolours on the subject. The legend of the magician and sorcerer Merlin, King Arthur or Artus, and the search for the Holy Grail has been told since the early Middle Ages. So, what is true, what is the historical background? With the help of the oldest sources, the author has now created her new work, a historical novel. In this novel, the author follows the historical origins of these people. Using the earliest sources of manuscripts, a picture of life in Celtic Britain of the late fifth and early sixth centuries is shown, describing the life story of the bard and druid Myrddyn, from whom the later figure of Merlin developed, his youth and apprenticeship, his love stories and adventures. The struggle for domination over Britain between the native Celts and the invading Germanic peoples of the Angles and Saxons forms the background for the description of the influence and power of the druid Myrddyn. It is he who, with the help of the sacred symbols of the Celtic world of beliefs, helps King Arthur to become High King and a defender and saviour of the Celtic peoples, their language and their culture. It is also about the advance of Christianity, which tries to displace the old beliefs.

-- A forgotten box of letters in a dark attic corner, messages from women friends written decades ago ---- An intimate record of a time of great transition in how women experienced their daily lives and imagined their future --During the 1970's and 80's, Signe Eklund Schaefer and her young family moved often, within the United States and abroad. Handwritten letters, now relics of a pre-Internet world, were vital to her ongoing connection with friends and to her evolving sense of self. From the surprising discovery of these old letters she has woven a moving account of the reflections, mutual support and multi-dimensional exchanges between women friends, which offer a record of women's lives five decades ago, and speak powerfully to contemporary social concerns.Exploring relationships, motherhood, children, personal development, career and friendship itself, the letters touch on the emerging women's movement, efforts for world peace, and individual spiritual striving. The Epilogue offers new letters from these articulate and impassioned women, now in their 70's and 80's.Signe Eklund Schaefer is the author of Why on Earth? -- Biography and the Practice of Human Becoming. She served on the faculty of Emerson College in England and directed Foundation Studies at Sunbridge College in New York for more than twenty years.

The story continues in The Forgotten Kingdom, the second book in the epic Lost Queen trilogy, already hailed as "Outlander meets Camelot" (Kirsty Logan, author of Things We Say in the Dark) and "The Mists of Avalon for a new generation" (Linnea Hartsuyker, author of The Golden Wolf).AD 573. Imprisoned in her chamber, Languoreth awaits news in torment. Her husband and son have ridden off to wage war against her brother, Lailoken. She doesn't yet know that her young daughter, Angharad, who was training with Lailoken to become a Wisdom Keeper, has been lost in the chaos. As one of the bloodiest battles of early medieval Scottish history scatters its survivors to the wind, Lailoken and his men must flee to exile in the mountains of the Lowlands, while nine-year-old Angharad must summon all Lailoken has taught her and follow her own destiny through the mysterious, mystical land of the Picts. In the aftermath of the battle, old political alliances unravel, opening the way for the ambitious adherents of the new religion: Christianity. Lailoken is half-mad with battle sickness, and Languoreth must hide her allegiance to the Old Way to survive her marriage to the next Christian king of Strathclyde. Worst yet, the new King of the Angles is bent on expanding his kingdom at any cost. Now the exiled Lailoken, with the help of a young warrior named Artur, may be the only man who can bring the Christians and the pagans together to defeat the encroaching Angles. But to do so, he must claim the role that will forever transform him. He must become the man known to history as "Myrddin." Bitter rivalries are ignited, lost loves are found, new loves are born, and old enemies come face-to-face with their reckoning in this compellingly fresh look at one of the most enduring legends of all time.
