Educating the Top 100 Percent assesses the decline of higher education funding and offers ambitious policy recommendations to restore the possibility of accessible, affordable education for all.Stephen G. Katsinas, Nathaniel J. Bray, and Martha J. Kanter probe the complex interplay of federal, state, and local policies and illustrate how government actions have, over time, contributed to the long-term slide of US educational attainment. Declining federal and state funding of public higher education has forced institutions to revise their financial models, passing costs directly through to students, to the detriment of prospective students—and the nation. Experts in education policy, the authors point out how the unintended consequences of today's funding model deny an ever-increasing portion of the population important educational and professional opportunities.By providing context for how we arrived at this financial conundrum and analyzing robust quantitative data from national sources, Katsinas and his colleagues offer pragmatic, sustainable, and stable policy options for educating all Americans. The authors provide innovative ideas, key lessons learned, and actionable proposals to fund public higher education. Their top-down federal and bottom-up local and state policy solutions aim to rectify plummeting high school-to-college continuation and college graduation rates. As a result, they present a vision of a brighter economic, cultural, and civic future for educating all Americans.Educating the Top 100 Percent demonstrates how stable, sustainable funding policies can scaffold a better public higher education system for all.

Channeling (noun): The practice of conveying information through a spirit guide or any consciousness that is not human. I wrote this story in a semi-trance following a vivid dream, like someone else was writing it. Was I channeling? I was meant to write it. You are meant to read it. The Story: A caller claiming to be God calls everyone on the planet at 9:00 AM UTC/GMT, every morning, for one week, demanding we cease all killings. The message? At the end of the initial week of warnings, starting on Day 8, anyone who kills someone will also die instantly, as well as the senior-most member of the chain of command. This includes gangs, police departments, terrorist groups and any government organization, as well as our President as he is Commander-in Chief. If the killings persist in high numbers after a few weeks we will be totally replaced with a more peaceful race. The millions of simultaneous calls and emails cannot be traced and the callers voice cannot be recorded. Who is really calling? A clever hacker? Terrorists? The NSA? We have one week to create peace on Earth or else. What would you ask?Everyone is encouraged to ask questions during the calls, and all are answered, challenging all the world's religious beliefs. Seven mornings, one weeks warning. The story is written nine years after the events of the week of the phone calls, through the experience of Cheryl Hanson, the daughter of then Senior Senator Thaddeus Hanson. Cheryl is writing this memoir at the request of her ten-year-old daughter, Aryanah. Back then, Cheryl was agnostic, having watched her grandparents get swept to their death in a ferry accident during a vacation in the Philippines when she was seven years old. How could God allow such a thing? Therefore, there could be no God. This is partly the story of her redemption, salvation and grief. If the edicts of the Messages come true, her father is at risk as he is third in line of presidential succession. Cheryl is in love with two men who are best friends, one of whom is an Iraqi national, Khoud, whose cousin Selim is a known terrorist. Could Khoud be a part of a sleeper cell? Her other love interest, Nate, is a senior technology analyst trying to record the voice of the caller. Will he succeed?Since everyone who takes the calls from the mysterious caller who claims to be God is encouraged to ask deeper questions, these are a centerpiece of the story, creating a world-wide controversy. The answers do not jive with the beliefs and tenets of most religions causing an uproar in the theological arena. The religious leaders of the world therefore disavow the caller's claim that he is God, as it undermines their own authority and beliefs. The current President at the time of the calls, Roberto Garcia is a Catholic and has a particularly difficult time with these questions and answers. Adding to the problem is the fact that he is Cheryl's Godfather and a close friend of Senator Thaddeus Hanson. The two served as marines in Vietnam together and saved each other's lives in two horrific incidents. Afterwards, vowing to bring peace to the world, they ran against each other in the presidential election with opposing views on how to do this. Garcia is an aggressive military hawk, and Hanson offered a Gandhi-like approach. Garcia won the election. As the week rolls on and the caller's identity cannot be proven, or the voice recorded, Senator Hanson wants to create the 28th Amendment to the Constitution to dissolve all our militaries, having this worded, vetted and ready, just in case. The National Security Adviser and Director of the FBI vehemently oppose this approach and discount the caller as a coordinated terrorist hoax. Despite this, President Garcia allows and supports Senator Hanson's efforts...just in case...as he himself is slowly being won over through the deep personal questions he is asking the caller. What happens?

Afreeism (ay'-free-izm), the understanding that free will is an illusion, is a concept so powerful that it profoundly transforms the way we see the world. Its origins date back over two millennia, yet it is substantiated by modern scientific discoveries. By embracing afreeism, we can learn . . .--To live without guilt, regret, remorse . . . and to live more joyfully.--To judge others less, opening ourselves to greater acceptance and understanding.-- To live in the moment, shedding the baggage of the past and the worries for the future.--To work toward a more just world, knowing that our actions matter. Afreeism requires no leaps of faith. Professor Marks lays out the philosophical history and scientific underpinnings of afreeism while exploring the surprising implications for those who embrace it.

The Kentigern Way is a guide to a pilgrimage route in one of the most majestic landscapes in the UK, that of the Lake District, which is rich in beauty, nature and history. More than this, it provides an historical backdrop to St Kentigern and the region, cutting through myths and assumptions to examine the reality of emerging 6th-century Christianity in ‘Britannia’. Kentigern is also known as St Mungo, the patron saint of Glasgow, although his influence goes far beyond that city. This book also discusses what pilgrimage is (and how it differs from tourism) and provides suggestions on how to enrich the pilgrimage experience through guided reflections and prayers. Although the pilgrimage is rooted in Christian sacred sites, it is made accessible to people of all faiths and none who seek spiritual depth in the experience. You don’t have to be a Christian to follow this pilgrimage route, nor will this book try to make you one. Includes a look at the feminine in contemporary Christianity and a special section on the importance of Kentigern’s often-ignored mother, Teneu. Historians will enjoy the honest assessment of Kentigern’s life and some revealing asides about the reality of Celtic culture. Walkers will find an enthralling travel guide and a beautiful, manageable route. Contemplatives will be encouraged by the emphasis on listening and stillness. And I challenge anyone not to be inspired and intrigued by the thoughtfulness and love that have gone into researching and producing this unusual and compelling work.
