Janet Lau's thesis describes her studies into the use of phthalocyanine-based photosensitizers in combined chemo- and photodynamic therapy (PDT) and targeted PDT. In order to carry out this study, Lau uses several approaches: conjugation with a chemotherapeutic oxaliplatin derivative, use of a polyamine ligand 2 with a view to targeting the polyamine transporters over-expressed in tumor cells, and employment of a quencher that can inhibit their photodynamic activity but can still be removed under a tumor-associated environment such as low pH and high thiol concentration. This thesis reports dual activatable photosensitizers for the first time. Overall the studies included are original and the effects have been well demonstrated at the cellular level. The work in this thesis is of much current interest and importance, and can pave foundation for further developments. Accordingly, part of the results has been published in prestigious scientific journals.

World aquaculture is growing more than any other primary activity sector, among other factors stimulated by the growing population and the demand for healthy, nutrient-rich food. Taking advantage of existing water resources has led to the development of fish farming, with fish reared in net pens, dugouts or weirs. It is a lower-cost investment alternative that is quicker to implement and is seen as an agribusiness capable of improving the social, environmental and economic conditions of a region. Increased susceptibility to parasitic, bacteriological and infectious diseases has caused major losses in fish farming. The occurrence of parasites and bacteria is one of the biggest causes of losses in industrial and sport fish farming, and there is also the fact that the aquatic environment facilitates the reproduction, dispersal and survival of pathogens. Research into fish health is scarce, especially when it relates to native species.

L'acquacoltura mondiale sta crescendo pi di qualsiasi altro settore dell'attivit primaria, tra gli altri fattori stimolati dall'aumento della popolazione e dalla domanda di alimenti sani e ricchi di nutrienti. Lo sfruttamento delle risorse idriche esistenti ha portato allo sviluppo della piscicoltura, con pesci allevati in recinti di rete, piroghe o dighe. Si tratta di un'alternativa di investimento a basso costo, pi rapida da implementare e considerata un'attivit agroalimentare in grado di migliorare le condizioni sociali, ambientali ed economiche di una regione. L'aumento della suscettibilit alle malattie parassitarie, batteriologiche e infettive ha causato gravi perdite nella piscicoltura. L'insorgenza di parassiti e batteri una delle maggiori cause di perdita nella piscicoltura industriale e sportiva, oltre al fatto che l'ambiente acquatico facilita la riproduzione, la dispersione e la sopravvivenza degli agenti patogeni. La ricerca sulla salute dei pesci scarsa, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le specie autoctone.

Biopsy Pathology of the Bronchi is intended to provide the practicing pathologist with a convenient source of diagnostic information, combined with pertinent clinical patterns and a background of histogenesis. It is hoped that the book will facilitate the accuracy of diagnosis, minimize pitfalls of interpretation and assist in the rapid evaluation of acute and chronic bronchial lesions, including neoplasms. Biopsy is taken in the widest sense and the book includes discussions on cytology, microbiopsies (fine needle aspiration biopsies, curette samples, and biopsies obtained by microforceps) and macrobiopsies, obtained at the time of surgery. Part I of the book deals with the procurement and preparation of bronchial specimens and includes a chapter on fetal development and structure of the normal adult epithelium. In Part II, the histopathology of numerous bronchial diseases are described in detail. Emphasis is placed on the diagnostic features of human lesions' which are illustrated by numerous high quality light and electron micrographs. Understanding normal bron chial structure, cell kinetics, and modulations of phenotypic expression provide insight into many pathological processes. Therefore, although emphasis is placed on the diagnostic features of human disease, the histopathology of corresponding lesions in experimental animals is dis cussed where this provides information helpful in the interpretation of the human lesions.
