To promote the movie National Treasure starring Nicolas Cage, Walt Disney Pictures identified W.C. Jameson as one of the three experts in the U.S. on finding lost treasures. Disney representatives interviewed him for publicity of the film and then spent two days with him in the mountains filming what will become part of the trailer for the film on DVD. Well known for his compelling series on America's lost mines and buried treasure, Jameson ties stories of adventurous treasure hunting to American history to add this book to Taylor's growing "fun history" series. With his storyteller's gift, he relates episodes from early explorers through the colonial period, the Civil War, and the settling of the West. As a professional treasure hunter, he has followed the trails of many of the lost mines and buried treasures he describes. Sample treasures: Sir Francis Drake Treasure, Nez Pierce Gold, Benedict Arnold Treasure, Lafayette's Sunken Riches, Maryland's Lost Silver Mine, The Wandering Confederate Treasury, Lost Treasure of the Gray Ghost, Oklahoma Outlaw Cashe, Jacob Fagan's Lost Loot, Missouri River Gold Cache, Lost Spanish Gold in the Sandia Mountains.
Billy the Kid: Beyond the Grave traces the life of this famous desperado through his role in the Lincoln County War, the alleged killing by Sheriff Pat Garrett, Billy's escape, and his life for the next sixty-nine years. In 1948, an old man named William Henry Roberts was confronted with evidence that he was Billy the Kid. At first he denied his identity, but reluctantly admitted who he was. Based on taped interviews with Roberts, new evidence discovered in the 1990s, and sophisticated photo comparison technology by the FBI, the conclusion that Roberts was Billy the Kid gains support.
Bill Littlefield (NPR's Only a Game) presents the second installment in the Library of America series devoted to classic American sportswriters, a defintive collector's edition of the pathbreaking writer who invented the long-form sports story. Like his friend and admirer Red Smith, W. C. Heinz (1915-2008) was one of the most distinctive and influential sportswriters of the last century. Though he began his career as a newspaper reporter, Heinz soon moved beyond the confines of the daily column, turning freelance and becoming the first sportwriter to make his living writing for magazines. In doing so he effectively invented the long-form sports story, perfecting a style that paved the way for the New Journalism of the 1960s. His profiles of the top athletes of his day still feel remarkably current, written with a freshness of perception, a gift for characterization, and a finely tuned ear for dialogue. Jimmy Breslin named Heinz's "Brownsville Bum"--a brief life of Al "Bummy" Davis, Brooklyn street tough and onetime welterweight champion of the world--"the greatest magazine sports story I've ever read, bar none." His spare and powerful 1949 column, "Death of a Race Horse," has been called a literary classic, a work of clarity and precision comparable to Hemingway at his best. Now, for this essential writer's centennial, Bill Littlefield, the host of NPR's Only A Game, presents the essential Heinz: thirty-eight columns, profiles, and memoirs from the author's personal archive, including eighteen pieces never collected during his lifetime. Though Heinz's great passion was boxing--the golden era of Rocky Graziano, Floyd Patterson, and Sugar Ray Robinson--his interests extended to the wide world of sports, with indelible profiles of baseball players (Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio), jockeys (George Woolf, Eddie Arcaro), hockey players, football coaches, scouts and trainers and rodeo riders.
Willy Olsen is obsessed; he's lost his trigger finger and now he's bent on revenge. Willy's nemesis is a mysterious, white creature that has taken up residence under his front porch, and he will stop at nothing to flush the critter out. Assisting Willy is his son, Skeeter, and erudite nephew, Ishmael. Together the three of them become entangled in a convoluted drama that threatens to destroy them all. At times funny, at others haunting, Moby Hick is destined to become an instant classic.
