This book is the first of its kind to systematically compare the policies of George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama towards Ghana, with a focus on economic aid, military aid, and immigration. It examines George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama’s economic aid policies, military aid policies, and immigration policies towards Ghana to identify not only the significant differences between the approaches of the two administrations, but also the factors that influenced and exacerbated the difference in their approaches. The book is also significant in terms of its epistemological contributions to diplomatic praxes, the literature on United States foreign policy, and development theories.

The fundamental issues that structure social and political philosophy revolve around the tensions between cooperative (ethical) values and competitive (self-interested) values. This book presents an in-depth examination of how society reacts to these as they move forward in the ancient Greek world. This model uses a methodology that is universal and can be applied to cultures at various historical epochs. The book advocates a "bottom-up" approach that employs a Wittgenstein-style methodology that is exactly detailed as it examines social usage as a sign of what is valued. These tensions are a part of every society that ever existed, and so these discussions are not only relevant from a historical perspective, but also speak to us today.

pokkari
First published in 1923, this volume contains 153 Letters written by W. H. Hudson. The letters were written to the author of this book, Edward Garnett, a literary critic whom Hudson would meet most Tuesdays to discuss all things written. Also in their little weekly club were such writers as Hilaire Belloc, Perceval Gibbon, Joseph Conrad, and others. William Henry Hudson (4 August 1841 - 18 August 1922) was an ornithologist, author, naturalist, and founding member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Other notable works by this author include: "A Crystal Age" (1887), "Argentine Ornithology" (1888), and "Lost British Birds" (1894). This volume will very much appeal to those with an interest in the life and mind of W. H. Hudson, and it is not to be missed by collectors of vintage literature of this ilk. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction.

The Augustinian Theology of W. H. Auden
Stephen J. Schuler; Malcolm Alan Compitello
University of South Carolina Press
2013
sidottu
When W. H. Auden returned to Christianity in the early 1940s, he identified himself with what he called an ""existential"" method of spiritual and literary inquiry, which the writings of St. Augustine helped him define as a mode of thinking that not only allows for human subjectivity, but emphasises the hopes, fears, needs, desires, and anxieties of the individual. Augustine thus became for Auden a model of a thinker who seamlessly merged psychological reflection with philosophical speculation and theological insight, and it is this combination of introspection and theoretical investigation that shapes much of Auden's later poetry. The Augustinian Theology of W. H. Auden illustrates that Augustine's thought is a major influence on Auden's post-conversion poetry and prose. Auden encountered Augustine both directly, through his reading of the Confessions, and indirectly, through several of Auden's contemporaries, such as Reinhold Niebuhr, Charles Norris Cochrane, and Charles Williams. Stephen J. Schuler argues that Augustine provided Auden with the language of privation to describe the nature of moral and social evil, enabling him to make sense of the pervasive anxieties produced by World War II. Augustine's works also offered Auden a rationale for his intuition that the physical world, and especially the human body, is intrinsically good. Auden's struggle to reconcile the implications of his Augustinian theology with his attitudes toward romantic love and sexuality are explained by Schuler, who demonstrates how the Augustinian theology of Reinhold Niebuhr helped shape Auden's ideas about human identity and community, which is defined and maintained by love in all its various forms. Finally, Schuler analyses Auden's Augustinian view of the ethics of poetry. By examining the presence of Augustinian ideas in Auden's poetry and prose, Schuler establishes the Augustinian origins of several crucial but often misunderstood features of Auden's work as well as the importance of Augustine in shaping and articulating the concerns of Auden's later poetry.
During a conversation about literary forgeries, Erskine tells his young guest that he has received – as a legacy from a friend, the Cambridge scholar Cyril Graham – what is purported to be an Elizabethan portrait. The painting depicts a beautiful young man in late-sixteenth-century costume, whom Graham claimed to be Willie Hughes, a boy-actor serving in Shakespeare’s company. This prompts Erskine’s guest to delve deeper into the mystery surrounding the real identity of the dedicatee and the inspiration of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, with unforeseen consequences.Far from being a dry exposition of a literary theory, The Portrait of Mr W.H. – which the author himself described as one of his “early masterpieces” – is an engaging and entertaining narrative exploring the intricate facets of trust and betrayal, historical truth and fiction, written with Wilde’s trademark dialogical sharpness and stylistic perfection.
The W.H.O.L.E. Man is a guide for men who desire to become complete in their life's journey with God. It offers real-life experiences of a man who understands why only God is the source of true wholeness. It addresses our sinfulness as humans, what the love of God means and the real power in submission.
