Dreaming of Ramadi in Detroit: Essays

Dreaming of Ramadi in Detroit: Essays

Aisha Sabatini Sloan

An electric essay collection about Blackness, art, and dreaming of new possibilities in a time of constrictionThis collection of innovative, penetrating, and lively essays features swimming pools and poets, road trips and museums, family dinners and celebrity sightings. In a voice that is at once piercing, mournful, and slyly comic, Aisha Sabatini Sloan inhabits several roles: she is an art enthusiast in Los Angeles during a city-wide manhunt; a daughter on a road trip with her father; a professor playing with puppets in the wilds of Vermont; an interloper on a police ride-along in Detroit; a collector of the dreams of scientists at a biostation. As she watches cell phone video recordings of murder and is haunted in her sleep by the news, she reflects on her formative experiences with aesthetic and spiritual discovery, troubling those places where Blackness has been conflated with death. Sabatini Sloan's lively style is perfectly suited to the way she circles a subject or an idea before cinching it tight. The curiosity that guides each essay, focusing on the period between the 2016 election and the onset of the pandemic, is rooted in the supposition that there is an intrinsic relationship between the way we conceptualize darkness and our collective opportunity for awakening.

This book uses C.S. Peirce’s idea that memory constructs a semiotic picture of “the self” to suggest that motherhood can be conceived as an immigrant identity: both involve a culturally and internally disruptive transition. Aisha Raees provides an exegesis of Peirce’s work and builds a picture of how perception and the active constitution of thought deliver a sense of identity dependent on memory as well as on the value and power of hope. The book also explores the role of trauma in the creation of self as process of memory. In developing an empowering conception of the ontological condition of motherhood, it draws out how self can negotiate duality within identity in circumstances where belonging is not tied to physical place and how it unfolds both in the new community and in the ones left behind.

Inspired by a shocking true story, this haunting debut novel of love, brotherhood, resilience, and redemption set in Pakistan calls to mind the modern classics The Kite Runner and The Beekeeper of Aleppo. On the outskirts of Lahore, Pakistan, a large yellow moon hung low in the sky when the men came with dogs and guns and cricket bats. In front of his family's small hut on the edge of a looming brick kiln, Lalloo's brother was murdered. Unable to escape the memory of that horrible night, Lalloo's parents and sisters remain trapped, the kiln chimney churning black smoke into the sky as the family slave, brick by brick, to pay off their debts. To rescue them, Lalloo must free himself from his past and carve out his own destiny.
