Dieser Band dokumentiert ein deutsch-tschechisches Kolloquium, welches im April 2004 an der Universitat Bamberg durchgefuhrt wurde. Im interdisziplinaren Diskurs arbeiten 24 Referentinnen und Referenten (12 aus Tschechien und 12 aus Deutschland) heraus, dass dem ganzheitlichen Denken des Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) hoechste Aktualitat fur die derzeitige Globalisierungs-Thematik zuzusprechen ist: Die von Comenius konzipierte Allreform, die politische, philosophische und religioese Komponenten einschliesst, enthalt wirksame Potentiale fur einen "kreativen Frieden" der Voelker und Kulturen. Mit diesem Begriff ist eine Ordnung gemeint, welche nicht von "aussen" oder "oben" aufgepragt wird, sondern sich vielmehr von "innen" her begrundet, indem sie der Grunddisposition des menschlichen Seins entspricht. Das genannte Kolloquium versteht sich als weitere Konkretion des international weit verzweigten Forschungsprojektes Kreativer Friede durch Begegnung der Weltkulturen. Initiator dieses Projektes und Nestor des interkulturellen Philosophierens ist der Philosoph Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Heinrich Beck, welcher anlasslich seines 75. Geburtstages durch das Bamberger Kolloquium geehrt wurde.

Insofern Erziehung auf die Zukunft gerichtet ist, bedarf sie der Hoffnung. Und wer nicht hofft, kann auch nicht erziehen. Doch die nicht selten euphorisch zu nennende Erwartung, dass man von einer wissenschaftlich begründeten Erziehung auch eine entscheidende Weltverbesserung erhoffen könne, dürfte wesentlich eine Erfindung der anhebenden Neuzeit gewesen sein. Die übliche pädagogische Ideengeschichte sieht in Comenius zumeist einen vormodernen Gegenpol zum technisch-zivilisatorischen Denken der Neuzeit – und übersah damit notwendig wesentliche Kontinuitäten. Denn es war Comenius, der mit seiner pansophischen Systematik zuerst die Hoffnung verband, eine solcherart durchkonstruierte Erziehungsmaschine begründet zu haben, dass eine wahrhaft pansophisch ausgerichtete Erziehung auch einen unfehlbaren Erziehungserfolg verbürgen müsse. Ein mentalitätsgeschichtlicher Zugang vermag dabei zu zeigen, wie sich die pädagogischen Hoffnungen des Comenius entwickelt und zeitgleich mit der pansophischen Systematik ausgeprägt haben. Je durchdachter die Systematik wurde, desto unfehlbarer sollte auch die Erziehung werden. Mit einer vollkommen realisierten pansophischen Erziehung würden sich also alle Hoffnungen auf eine Weltverbesserung erfüllen; alles, was bis dahin zukunftsgerichtete Hoffnung war, würde also mit der Pampaedia zur erfüllten Gegenwart werden. Von der menschlichen resignation der Frühschriften über die gott-menschliche cooperatio der pansophischen Programmschriften führt solcherart der Weg zur intendierten omnipotentia des Menschen, an welcher schließlich auch die Erziehung teilhaben soll. Unter der Rücksicht der longue durée ist Comenius damit nicht nur ein, sondern letztlich der Begründer der pädagogischen Moderne. Seit Comenius produziert wissenschaftlich-systematisches Denken immer neue Erziehungshoffnungen, die sich sodann durch gesellschaftliche Erwartungshaltungen selbstlaufend re-produzieren und die Nachfrage nach pädagogischer Wissenschaftlichkeit wiederum steigern. Doch die Welt hat sich bis heute bekanntlich nicht verbessern lassen – trotz einer über 350 Jahre alten Tradition wissenschaftlich begründeter Pädagogik.

Thornton Wilder, the only author to have won the Pulitzer Prize for both drama and fiction, frequently portrays characters struggling with religious and theological issues. His work has been examined by critics in connection with American Puritanism, existentialism, and Vedantic literature, but little attention has been paid to the works of Thornton's brother Amos, an ordained minister, poet, biblical scholar, literary critic, and professor at Harvard. Thornton Wilder and Amos Wilder: Writing Religion in Twentieth-Century America is the first book to explore the relationship between Thornton's work and his brother Amos's scholarship. Previous critics of Thornton's works have claimed that they describe timeless human values. Christopher Wheatley, on the contrary, argues that Wilder is primarily interested in the historical context of ideas, the ways in which they are a product of their time. He demonstrates how this parallels elements in Amos's biblical scholarship. For the most part scholars have also treated Wilder's works as if his ideas were static throughout his career. Wheatley contends that Wilder's early works of fiction and drama examine religion in times of historical crisis, whereas his later works demonstrate a deep concern about the intellectual, social, economic, and spiritual currents of contemporary America, as well as the influences of existentialism and postwar skepticism on his evolving religious ideas. This commentary will appeal particularly to those familiar with Professor Soggin's Introduction to the Old Testament and History of Israel who would prefer an alternative to the parallel work by J. L. Mays in the Old Testament Library. Primul sau volum de povestiri, Acolo unde urla sacalii, apare in 1965, fiind urmat de romanul "Altundeva poate" (1966).In 1967 lupta in Razboiul de Sase Zile, iar in 1973 participa la Razboiul de Yom Kippur. The plan of this volume of commentary on the New English Bible text of three Old Testament books follows the pattern established by the New Testament series of Cambridge Bible Commentaries on the New English Bible. The main divisions of the text are those provided by the New English Bible itself. The text is further subdivided for the purposes of the commentary, which is printed in short sections following the relevant portion of text. In his introduction Dr McKeating discusses the chronology of the books in this volume, indicating briefly the historical events of the period. He examines the structure and content of these books and shows how these three men, alike in their intensity but utterly different in background and in temperament, reflect three different attitudes to a corrupt society.

This learned volume offers a close reading of chapters 3 to 6 of the book of Amos, and attempts to locate biblical study and theological reflection within the complex cultural context of Latin America. The author prefaces his study with a wide-ranging survey of the continuing debate over the proper use of the Bible as a model for the structures of society. The author's particular focus is Latin America, and through sociological and textual analysis, he seeks to define the role of the prophetic biblical voice in this society and presses for a recognition of moral complexities and a constant questioning and self-evaluation from those who would claim to speak for God in society.
