Since the title was created in the fourteenth century, five English princes have borne the title Duke of Clarence. The first, Lionel, son of Edward III, and the second, Thomas, son of Henry IV, both fought in the Hundred Years' War, the latter perishing in battle. The third, George, brother of Edward IV and Richard III, was the only one to leave a legitimate male heir, but was sentenced to death for treason and allegedly drowned in a butt of malmsey wine. The fourth, William Henry, son of George III, was the only one to succeed to the throne, becoming William IV. The last, Albert Victor, son of the future Edward VII, would have followed his father on the throne had he not died young from influenza. In addition the brief and tragic life of Lord Guildford Dudley, who was offered the title by his wife Lady Jane Grey, the nine days' Queen, is also included. This is the first book to tell the lives of each of the Dukes, spanning six centuries from the medieval period to the Victorian era.

The Great Trials of Clarence Darrow: The Landmark Cases of Leopold and Loeb, John T. Scopes, and Ossian Sweet
"Wonderfully evocative... Donald McRae captures the Great Defender in all his complexity.... A joy to read." -- Kevin Boyle, National Book Award-winning author of Arc of Justice "Astonishingly vivid." --James Tobin, Award-winning author of Ernie Pyle's War The story of the three dramatic trials that resurrected the life and career of America's most colorful--and controversial--defense attorney: Clarence Darrow. Many books, plays, and movies have covered Darrow and the trials of Leopold and Loeb, John T. Scopes, and Ossian Sweet before: Geoffrey Cowan's The People v. Clarence Darrow; Simon Baatz's For the Thrill of It; Kevin Boyle's Arc of Justice; Meyer Levin's Compulsion and the film adaptation of the same name; Inherit the Wind; but few, if any, have achieved the intimacy and immediacy of Donald McRae's The Great Trials of Clarence Darrow.
I Am Osage: How Clarence Tinker Became the First Native American Major General
This informative and inspiring picture book by acclaimed author Kim Rogers (Wichita), with striking artwork by debut illustrator Bobby Von Martin (Choctaw), celebrates the achievements of Clarence Tinker, a member of the Osage Nation who became the first Native American major general.Clarence Tinker always knew that he wanted to do something extraordinary. Something adventurous. Something that made a difference in the world. But as a member of the Osage Nation at the turn of the twentieth century, there were a lot of obstacles that he had to face to achieve his dreams. When he was a child, Clarence was taken away from his family and community. He was forced to attend a prisonlike boarding school, like many other Native children of his generation. There, he wasn't able to speak his language or practice his Osage customs. Still, Clarence kept his dream close to his heart and joined the US Army with the goal of becoming an officer. Though he was treading an unfamiliar path, he worked hard and never forgot his Osage values and traditions that, ultimately, paved his way to success.I Am Osage, the first nonfiction project from the Heartdrum imprint, combines gorgeous, vibrant artwork with a stirring text that celebrates an unsung hero while also shedding light on significant American history.Features an author's note and timeline.

One Man's Journey Clarence Lincoln Thomas Sr.
People were on the move---more than six million over a period of 50 or 60 years. Four children, the oldest just 12 years old, were on a train heading north. They had what looked like a shoe box with them that probably held their food, and several small, rather old and worn looking suitcases. They were quiet, looking out the window, and occasionally glancing at each other as if to say, "what are we doing here?" What was the reason for this journey? Where were they going? Where were their parents? How would this journey affect their lives---particularly the life of the older boy?

The People's Justice: Clarence Thomas and the Constitutional Stories That Define Him
"Amul Thapar sets the record straight with this can't-put-down series of stories that reveal the courage, decency, and humanity of the man behind what many are calling the Thomas Court." --Megyn Kelly, journalist "Amul Thapar has done what even gifted law professors and professional 'Court watchers' often fail to do: Thapar has focused on the men and women whose lives are before the nine and on how one justice, Clarence Thomas, has carefully, consistently, and compassionately applied his understanding of the Constitution to those lives." -- Hugh Hewitt, host of The Hugh Hewitt Show and professor of law For thirty years, Clarence Thomas has been denounced as the "cruelest justice," a betrayer of his race, an ideologue, and the enemy of the little guy. In this compelling study of the man and the jurist, Amul Thapar demolishes that caricature. Every day, Americans go to court. Invoking the Constitution, they fight for their homes, for a better education for their children, and to save their cities from violence. Recounting the stories of a handful of these ordinary Americans whose struggles for justice reached the Supreme Court, Thapar shines new light on the heart and mind of Clarence Thomas. A woman in debilitating pain whose only effective medication has been taken away by the government, the motherless children of a slain police officer, victims of sexual assault-- read their eye-opening stories, stripped of legalese, and decide for yourself whether Thomas's originalist jurisprudence delivers equal justice under law. "Finding the right answer," Justice Thomas has observed, "is often the least difficult problem." What is needed is "the courage to assert that answer and stand firm in the face of the constant winds of protest and criticism." That courage--along with wisdom and compassion--shines out from every page of The People's Justice. At the heart of this book is the question: Would you want to live in Justice Thomas's America? After reading these stories, even his critics might be surprised by their answer.
