Winner of American Library Association Schneider Family Book Award Bobby Phillips is an average fifteen-year-old-boy. Until the morning he wakes up and can't see himself in the mirror. Not blind, not dreaming-Bobby is just plain invisible. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to Bobby's new condition; even his dad the physicist can't figure it out. For Bobby that means no school, no friends, no life. He's a missing person. Then he meets Alicia. She's blind, and Bobby can't resist talking to her, trusting her. But people are starting to wonder where Bobby is. Bobby knows that his invisibility could have dangerous consequences for his family and that time is running out. He has to find out how to be seen again-before it's too late.

A splendid Hudson River estate, complete with cook and rose garden. The landscape is inebriating, the women are in full, passionate bloom, and the men are incomprehensible. Susie-chic, smart, spacey, and no longer promiscuous- decides, at forty-five, to do what she would have done at twenty-five: invite a group of amusing friends to spend eight weekends of summer in stunning surroundings. The invitees include her oldest friend, Kay, elegantly nursing a broken heart; her former lover Dodge-still the sexiest man she knows; his randy, neurotic, comedian friend Ron; and Elise, an on-the-cusp artist determined to be in a relationship before she hits forty. Add to the mix Susie's very ardent, very surprising twenty-four-year-old son, and an exhibitionist au pair next door, and you have a delicious romantic farce that deftly slides into and out of something quite a bit darker.
Humans, among Other Classical Animals

Humans, among Other Classical Animals

We are living in a moment of environmental and existential crisis that demands a response. Why then study Classics now? From the European assimilation and destruction of the New World to our present environmental destruction of our shared world, Humans, among Other Classical Animals explores in encounters an answer by demonstrating how the Classics have been implicated in the structures of thought that have ultimately led us to our present historical moment. Telling the story of anthropology's Classical entanglements from its inception to its growth to critical self-awareness, it demonstrates that Classical ideas have played a crucial -and often deleterious- role in the Western placing of the human and in the discipline that claimed the study of humanity as its own. Responses to our present crisis, it argues, should therefore include as a prerequisite, considering the origins and implications of these Classical foundations because only by so doing can we attain the full self-awareness necessary to think beyond them and consider the alternatives we now need. Postclassical Interventions aims to reorient the meaning of antiquity across and beyond the humanities. Building on the success of Classical Presences, this complementary series features shorter-length monographs designed to provoke debate about the current and future potential of Classical Reception through fresh, bold, and critical thinking.

Catholics in Contemporary Britain showcases findings from a wide-ranging, empirical study of Catholics living in Britain. It offers a sociologically-informed study, placing the contemporary Catholic community in the wider contexts of their society and the global faith of which they are a part. The book has been animated by a set of compelling broader questions : Who are the Catholics in Britain? How do they engage with their faith and with the Church? What do they think about issue within, and the leadership of, their Church? What are their views on wider social issues and of the party-political landscape? The study is thematically broad in scope, focusing on demography, religiosity (addressing the three 'Bs' of 'believing', 'belonging', and 'behaving'), social-moral issues, church leadership and schooling, and party support and voting behaviour. The book presents a rich and fascinating demographic, religious, and attitudinal profile of Britain's Catholics in the 21st Century.

Policing a Diverse Society

Policing a Diverse Society

Phil Clements

Oxford University Press
2008
nidottu
Policing a Diverse Society (Second Edition) is a one-stop, practical resource covering all the major issues associated with policing diversity. Policing in the UK is essentially about policing diversity; diversity issues affect every aspect of the police officer's role and are key to the successful training of police officers. Whilst taking due account of the theoretical perspectives on policing diversity, this text supports and encourages the development of the relevant practical skills required to respond to diversity effectively. This text takes into account the wide range of diversity issues that police officers will need to address in their work. The text has been completely revised to incorporate a number of important developments that have occurred since the first edition was written, such as: recent developments of the newly established combined body, the Commission for Equality and Human Rights; the July 7th Report; the Copenhagen cartoons and the Jean Charles de-Menezes investigation. The second edition also boasts an additional chapter dealing with the six diversity strands that form the focus of police training (race, gender, age, faith, sexuality and disability). This very practical book is written to support the knowledge required by the National Occupational Standards (NOS) on diversity and the Integrated Competency Framework (ICF). Using this book will ensure students achieve these standards. Case studies, exercises, diagrams, reflect on practice boxes and chapter summaries are used to help students understand the material, consolidate their knowledge and apply the concepts to their every day professional work. The book's interactive, accessible style makes it suitable for student police officers working through the IPLDP, those in Higher Education studying for Foundation Degrees and other Policing degrees, as well as anyone engaged in delivering police training in diversity issues.
Principles of Computer Hardware

Principles of Computer Hardware

Alan Clements

Oxford University Press

Computer technology pervades almost every aspect of our life: from the cars that we drive, to the mobile phones that we use to communicate; from the digital cameras that capture images of the world around us, to the laser printers that turn image into picture. Yet at the heart of these enabling technologies lie fundamental components and systems, without the understanding of which such technologies would never have been developed. Principles of Computer Hardware explores the fundamentals of computer structure, architecture, and programming that underpin the array of computerized technologies around which our lives are now built. The book opens with an introduction to the fundamental concepts upon which computers are constructed - gates, circuits, logic - and computer arithmetic, the 'language' through which computers communicate. It then reveals how computers are structured and how they operate, taking us step-wise from the instruction set architecture, the bringing together of instructions through assembly language programming, and on to the heart of the computer, the central processing unit. The book then builds on these foundations to consider how the hardware interfaces with its surroundings, introducing us to topics such as computer memory; operating systems and the interface between hardware and software; and computer peripherals and computer communications - the interface with the outside world. Always putting educational value first, Principles of Computer Hardware uses the 68K processor as a powerful teaching and learning tool, putting substance firmly before style. With the clarity of explanation and captivating style for which Alan Clements is renowned, the book draws the student in to the heart of the subject, to foster an in-depth understanding from which more specialised study can then extend. The learning experience is enriched still further with a free CD-ROM, providing resources to enable students to engage with the subject in a hands-on manner: · A Windows-based simulator for the student to explore the design of digital circuits · Windows and DOS-based 68K simulators for students to investigate the operation of the 68K processor · An ARM simulator for students to write programs for a RISC processor, and run them on a PC Online Resource Centre: For lecturers (password protected): · Figures from the book available to download, to facilitate lecture preparation · Solutions to problems featured in the book, to aid formative learning · Multiple choice question test bank, to facilitate assessment of students' learning
