Since the industrial revolution, the economies of developed nations have grown at the expense of the natural world. But the earth's resources are finite, climate change threatens to dramatically transform how and where we live, and the global economic system is in disarray. One way or another we will have to change. The longer we delay, the more our societies will be at the mercy of events and the harsher the eventual adjustments. Fortunately, as this book shows, there is an alternative. Zac Goldsmith argues for the creation of what he calls a 'constant economy' - in which resources are valued not wasted, food is grown sustainably, and goods are built to last. The constant economy operates at the human scale, and above all it recognises nature's limits. He shows that almost every action needed to support the environment is already being carried out somewhere in the world, by companies, communities and governments determined to blaze a trail. Where they have done the right thing, their customers and voters have rewarded them. Practical solutions exist, and they are brought together and set out in this ground-breaking book.
"The Constant Leader" seeks to support and equip leaders in creating learning processes for the future while retaining personal perspective, equanimity and health. For the reader it is the next best thing to a personal mentor. The understanding of leadership has changed from being directive towards a people centred and future responsive style. Alongside this has been the growing awareness of the impact of emotional intelligence and its centrality in defining exemplary leadership. There is also a growing recognition of the intense toll on individuals who step up to lead groups within organisations and to lead the organisations themselves. This situation is being exacerbated by the imminent shortage of senior leaders within schools. This is in part due to the aging population of school leaders. It is also because many potential leaders are wary of taking on such demanding and potentially damaging roles."The Constant Leader" explores the relationship between emotional intelligence and high performing leaders. Uniquely it identifies the impact of stress on decision-making. Most importantly it advocates strategies for retaining personal health whilst performing at a high level and in particular enhancing creativity.

Deaf education in New South Wales has made tremendous progress since the end of World War II, yet issues remain for students from their early years of education through secondary high school. Naomi Malone traces the roots of these issues and argues that they persist due to the historical fragmentation within deaf education regarding oralism (teaching via spoken language) and manualism (teaching via sign language). She considers the early prevalence of oralism in schools for deaf students, the integration of deaf students into mainstream classrooms, the recognition of Australian Sign Language as a language, and the growing awareness of the diversity of deaf students. Malone's historical assessments are augmented by interviews with former students and contextualized with explanations of concurrent political and social events. She posits that deaf people must be consulted about their educational experiences and that they must form a united social movement to better advocate for improved deaf education, regardless of communication approach.
This 98th entry in the Historical Series of the Reformed Church in America is the definitive biography of Paul de Kruif whose life left intact the basic Christian tenet of service to others, biblically expressed: love thy neighbor. His life involved heavy drinking that led him to AA and, from there, back to religion and prayer. De Kruif's vocation as publicist on behalf of public health was in the forefront of the science of medicine. His professional understanding as a microbiologist, combined with his gift for lucid, compelling prose, made him one whose impact on the health of America could be argued as unparalleled.
Set near the concentration camps of Auschwitz, an accaimed historical thriller of the end of World War II that has been called "A masterpiece of empathetic imagination and storytelling flair" (BBC History Magazine, "Historical Novel of the Year") 1944. Paul Brandt, a soldier in the German army, returns wounded and ashamed from the bloody chaos of the Eastern Front to find his village changed and in the dark shadow of an SS rest hut--a luxurious retreat for officers recuperating from their injuries and for those who manage the nearby concentration camps of Auschwitz. The hut is run with the help of a small group of female prisoners from the camps who, against all odds, have survived the war so far. When, by chance, Brandt glimpses one of these prisoners, he realizes he must find a way to access the hut. For inside is the woman to whom his fate has been tied since their arrest five years earlier, and now he must do all he can to protect her. As the Russian offensive moves closer and partisans press from the surrounding woodlands, the days of this rest hut and its SS inhabitants are numbered. And while hope for Brandt and the female prisoners grows tantalizingly close, the danger is greater than ever. In a forest to the east, a young female Soviet tank driver awaits her orders to advance . . . The Constant Soldier has been hailed as "a masterpiece" and "a modern classic" and praised on its UK publication as "An extraordinary novel, with the intensity and pace of a thriller and a wisdom and subtlety all of its own. I was gripped to the very last page" (Antonia Hodgson).
Originally published in 1924, The Constant Nymph tells the story of how a teenage girl falls in love with a family friend, who eventually marries her cousin. The two girls show mutual jealousy over their common love for the man. The novel was a bestseller after it was first published, becoming the first novel of a genre that might be called "Bohemian". A significant part of its success was due to its (for the time) shocking sexual content, describing, as it does, scenes of adolescent sexuality and noble savagery in the Austrian Tyrol.
The Constant Nymph chronicles the complicated relationships within two families, primarily focusing on the character of Lewis Dodd, a charismatic, talented composer, and Tessa Sanger, the teenage daughter of his mentor, whose passionate love defies societal norms. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Swiss Alps and the bustling city of London, the narrative follows the lives of both the Dodd family and members of the Sanger household. The story takes a harrowing turn when the deaths of key figures destabilize the fragile equilibrium within each family. Central to the novel is the unquenchable love that Tessa Sanger harbors for Lewis. She is a vibrant and fervent young woman deeply enamored with him, despite the insurmountable barriers posed by their age difference and Lewis's marriage to her cousin. Despite these obstacles, Tessa's love for Lewis persists, and her emotions drive much of the story's tension and conflict. The Constant Nymph explores themes of love, obsession, artistic pursuit, and sacrifice, and delves into the enigma of human emotions and the complexities of unfulfilled desire. The novel has garnered praised for its vivid characters and emotional depth and has inspired various adaptations across different media over the years, including a 1943 film adaptation starring Charles Boyer and Joan Fontaine, whose performance as Tess earned her an Academy Award nomination. This Warbler Classics edition includes a biographical timeline.

Tuesday, September 10, 1957 Nick and Carter have left Nice and, after sailing down the Italian coast, have dropped anchor at the island of Procida, just across the bay from the Naples coast. Nick, as he is wont to do, meets the one homosexual who works at the local post office and, in short order, is invited to dinner along with Carter to meet the entire family. Italians, after all, are so friendly Meanwhile, Lord Gerald, their friend in British intelligence, has sent a cryptic telegram asking them to take a package over to Capri, an island on the far side of the Bay of Naples. When they dock at Capri the next morning, they find a dying duke, an eccentric earl, and a vigilant viscount all living together in a glorious villa dating back to the turn of the century. These are the final remnants of the once-thriving community of homosexual Englishmen who made the Italian island their sanctuary where they could live in peace as themselves. But is someone haunting this idyllic Mediterranean paradise? Who cut the phone line for no apparent reason? Who opened the locked door and then unlocked it again? Who is playing pranks with the plumbing? Maybe these are all just coincidences... Or maybe there is something more sinister afoot... Come sail away with Nick and Carter to the Island of Capri and find out
