Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Amphibians

Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Amphibians

Stanley S. Hillman; Philip C. Withers; Robert C. Drewes; Stanley D. Hillyard

Oxford University Press
2008
sidottu
Amphibians are the extant descendants of the first vertebrate class to successfully colonize terrestrial environments; hence they occupy a unique position between fish and reptiles. Amphibian skin provides essentially no resistance to evaporative water loss, and consequently daily water turnover rates are an order of magnitude greater than in other terrestrial vertebrate groups. This has led to a suite of physiological, morphological and behavioural adaptations that have allowed a successful terrestrial existence in spite of this apparently spendthrift water retention strategy. Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Amphibians provides a synthesis of current research on the comparative physiology of amphibians with a particular emphasis on water balance. It adopts a strong environmental perspective and includes a wealth of information on ecology, phylogeny and development. As with other books in the Ecological and Environmental Physiology Series, the emphasis in this book is on the unique physiological characteristics of the amphibians, although the latest experimental techniques and future research directions are also considered. This accessible text is suitable for both graduate students and researchers in the fields of amphibian comparative physiology and physiological ecology, including specialist courses in amphibian ecology. It will also be of value and use to the many professional herpetologists requiring a concise overview of the topic.

Managing Radical Organizational Change

Karen L. Newman; Stanley D. Nollen

SAGE Publications Inc

One of the opportunities presented by the breakup of the former Soviet Union is that organizational science scholars have been able to study radical changes companies must make in order to adapt to different economic and social goals. Authors Karen L. Newman and Stanley D. Nollen had the opportunity to examine in depth how companies in central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic) made the unprecedented move from a centrally planned system to a market economy. They present the results of that analysis in Managing Radical Organizational Change along with new theory they have developed about managing radical organizational changes. In addition, they provide a framework and practical guidelines that will help current and future international business leaders manage change more effectively. The book provides rich case histories of companies in transition. Seven of these cases appear in the appendix and are suitable for use as stand-alone cases in am MBA-level or executive development courses. The primary audience for Managing Radical Organizational Change includes scholars and advanced student studying organizational change and international business. A secondary audience exists in executive development courses that focus on business in central and eastern Europe.

Small Town, Giant Corporation traces the maturation of the profession of economic development as applied to Japanese manufacturing investment in the United States. The book is a case study of the wooing and eventual location of a Japan-based global auto parts producer in a small Midwestern community. The study considers motivations for Japanese investment, location patterns, and the adaptation of Japanese-owned companies to U.S. communities and business conditions. Economic development experts and other observers will find that the story of the successful interface between a global giant from Japan and a small Midwestern community forms an education case study of drawing and managing foreign investment. Contributors include Charles Bartha, Durene Booher, Randall Brock, Takeshi "Dennis" Doi, Richard Florida, Cynthia Fridgen, Michael Gagnon, Dr. Peter Kobrack, Edwin Matthewson, Michio "Henry" Ohiwa, Kazuhiro "Ben" Ohta, Mamoru Tanabe.

This anthology is a project celebrating The Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word / Performance Extravaganza - the 2014 event marking the 20th Anniversary of this uniquely New York tradition. The collection features the diverse work of many of the participants in what is recognizably a very verbose affair; from the seasoned wordsmith, to the literarily licentious, to the cerebrally provocative. A.N.Y.D.S.W.P.E. takes place every year in New York City's historic East Village. Hundreds of people funnel into the venue during an eight hour marathon reading on January 1st. To make the 20th anniversary extra-special, this year it was held at the world-famous Nuyorican Poets Caf . Why does such an event exist? Well, if you are going to write poetry, you might as well read it aloud. And if you are going to read it aloud, people might as well come and listen. And if people are going to come and listen, you might as well make a party of it. And if you are going to make a party of it, it might as well be one of the biggest parties of the year, and if it's going to be one of the biggest parties of the year, you might as well invite some of the best artists, writers, and performers to come and entertain the masses. You can also get drunk and fall in love while you're at it. In the event that you cannot make the party, we've put together this convenient little volume so you can sample the wonder, wisdom, brilliance, and madness without having to go outside. And if you did come to the party, well this book was a sure-fire way to take a poet home with you at the end of the night. No need to thank us. Your happiness is the only reward we require. ...That and the price for the copy. Enjoy.

This engaging, comprehensive textbook for sociology of sport courses takes a critical approach, focusing in particular on issues of power and inequality. By addressing questions such as "Are sports free of racism and sexism?" and "Who pays for, and who benefits from, sports?", students understand sport from a sociological perspective rather than as simply a spectator or participant.
