Parliament had to act – drastic measures were required to clean the Thames and to improve London’s primitive system of sanitation. The great engineer entrusted with this enormous task was Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who rose to the challenge and built the system of intercepting sewers, pumping stations and treatment works that serves London to this day. In the process, he cleansed the Thames and helped banish cholera. The Great Stink of London offers a vivid insight into Bazalgette’s achievements and the era in which he worked and lived, including his heroic battles with politicians and bureaucrats that would transform the face and health of the world’s then largest city.

The Woman That You Gave Me: A Case for or Against Adam

This book is designed to strengthen the men of God and to help them discern the attacks of the enemy that comes through women. As men of God it is our duty to led and protect our women, but we can't do that if we are not in alignment with God or if we allow the enemy to weaken us over a woman. The first man in human history Adam proved to us that men are easily tempted to go against God over a woman. He chose to follow Eve rather than lead her and follow God. Then he sought to justify himself by saying, "The Woman That You Gave Me."

The story of Adam and Eve has significantly impacted society by providing a foundational narrative for understanding human origins, morality, gender roles, and the concept of sin, shaping perspectives on topics like death, work, and the relationship between humans and God, particularly within Christian cultures; essentially, it serves as a framework for explaining the human condition and our shared responsibility for the consequences of choice. The problem with the Adam and Eve story, is that we got it wrong. Most people including the clergy have taken a literal approach to understanding it.The Garden story is a symbolic narrative full of hidden truths, that need to be uncovered. It is time to go beyond our Sunday School understanding of the story and see the truths God has always wanted us to know.
The Holy Bureaucrat

The Holy Bureaucrat

In a book that offers a fresh perspective on the complex relationship between thirteenth-century institutional power and evangelical devotion, Adam J. Davis explores the fascinating career of Eudes Rigaud, the Franciscan theologian at the University of Paris and archbishop of Rouen. Eudes's Register, a daybook that he kept for twenty-one years, paints a vivid picture of ecclesiastical life in thirteenth-century Normandy. It records the archbishop's visits to monasteries, convents, hospitals, and country parishes, where he sought to correct a wide range of problems, from clerics who were unchaste, who gambled, and who got drunk, to monasteries that were financially mismanaged and priests who did not know how to conjugate simple Latin verbs. Davis describes the collision between the world as it was and as Eudes Rigaud wished it to be, as well as the mechanisms that the archbishop used in trying to transform the world he found. The Holy Bureaucrat also reconstructs the multifaceted man behind the Register, reuniting Eudes Rigaud the intellectual, Franciscan preacher, church reformer, judge, financial manager, and trusted councillor to King Louis IX. The book traces the growth of a complex bureaucracy in Normandy that insisted on discipline and accountability and relied on new kinds of written administrative records. The result is an absorbing study of the interplay between religious values and practices, institutions and individuals during the age of Saint Louis.

In The Medieval Economy of Salvation, Adam J. Davis shows how the burgeoning commercial economy of western Europe in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, alongside an emerging culture of Christian charity, led to the establishment of hundreds of hospitals and leper houses. Focusing on the county of Champagne, he looks at the ways in which charitable organizations and individuals—townspeople, merchants, aristocrats, and ecclesiastics—saw in these new institutions a means of infusing charitable giving and service with new social significance and heightened expectations of spiritual rewards. In tracing the rise of the medieval hospital during a period of intense urbanization and the transition from a gift economy to a commercial one, Davis makes clear how embedded this charitable institution was in the wider social, cultural, religious, and economic fabric of medieval life.
