Between 1835 and the 1850s, railway mania blossomed around Britain. Crime emerged as the railways developed, at first opportunistic crimes such as fare evasion and robberies, but gradually more inventive forms evolved, notably the minor clerk Redpath in the 1850s, whose shameless cooking of the books to live the high life exposed the lack of any kind of accountancy across the railway industry. The first train murder was not until the 1840s, and sparked great fear of foreigners as a German was charged and hanged for the crime. The outcry resulted in the communication cord being introduced to the railway carriages, so that no longer would they exist as completely separate spaces and passengers could alert the driver to any assault within. This fascinating history covers all varieties of crime on the railways and how it has changed over the years, from assaults and robberies, to theft of goods, murder, vandalism, football and other crowd activity, suicide on the line, fraud and white collar crime, and also looks at the use of railway crime in film and literature.

London's Underground is associated with a multitude of ghostly stories and sightings, particular stations and abandoned lines, many of which are in close proximity to burial sites from centuries ago. This chilling book reveals well-known and hitherto unpublished tales of spirits, spectres and other spooky occurrences on one of the oldest railway networks in the world. The stories of sightings include the ghost of an actress regularly witnessed on Aldywch Station and the 'Black Nun' at Bank Station. Eerie noises, such as the cries of thirteen-year-old Anne Naylor, who was murdered in 1758 near to the site of what is now Farringdon Station, and the screams of children who were in an accident at Bethnal Green Station during Second World War, are still heard echoing. These and many more ghostly accounts are recorded in fascinating detail in this book, which is a must-read for anyone interested in the mysterious and murky history of London's Underground.

London is a historical city full of mysteries and curiosities, and is home to many of England's oldest and most quirky pubs. It comes as no surprise that these pubs have a great deal more than their fair share of ghosts, phantoms and ghouls or, as the old joke goes, spirits galore! A menacing ghostly soldier lurks in Mayfair's Grenadier pub; the hooves of Dick Turpin's Black Bess can be heard galloping up to the Spaniard's Inn at Hampstead; a scary nun does the rounds at the Horns in Bermondsey; and many people have heard the voices of long-dead drinkers killed when the King's Arms in Peckham Rye was blitzed. Combining some well-known stories with others that are long-forgotten, this fascinating book delves into the rich tapestry of London's pub history, with a perfect mix of the past, folklore, popular culture and the supernatural.

This is the first biography of the much-loved seventies actor Richard Beckinsale, who died on 19 March 1979 at the age of thirty-one. It looks back at one of the biggest stars of that decade through the eyes of family, friends and colleagues. With his star rising steadily, he died of a heart attack, alone at home. Adored by the general public, his death was one of the most shocking losses to British comedy of the late seventies, and since then there has never been an actor with the same innocent charm as Richard Beckinsale. Nor did his popularity wane after his untimely death: repeats of the classic sitcoms Porridge and Rising Damp would keep his memory alive throughout the ensuing three decades. The Richard Beckinsale Story is an uplifting, but ultimately sad, tale of the life and death of a great talent. It is the compelling story of a man destined for greatness, but ultimately cut down in his prime.

This book contains all manner of grim and ancient punishments from London’s long and bloody history. Over the centuries, many hundreds have expired inside the capital’s dank, rat-infested cells, or whilst ‘dancing the Tyburn jig’ at the end of a swinging rope, and many of the sites in this book have become bywords for infamy. From the Tower and Newgate prison to the Clink and the Fleet, this book explores London’s criminal heritage; also including the stocks and pillories that lie, almost forgotten, in churchyards and squares across the City, and the many shocking punishments exacted inside the region’s churches, workhouses and schools, it is a heart-breaking survey of our nation’s penal history. Richly illustrated, and filled with victims and villains, nobles, executioners and torturers, it will delight historians, residents and visitors alike.

Descartes's Legacy

Descartes's Legacy

Debates current in the philosophy of mind regarding the gathering and processing of information, and the nature of perception and representation, also animated some of the most important figures in early modern philosophy, among them Descartes, Hume, and Berkeley. The authors of Descartes's Legacy: Minds and Meaning in Early Modern Philosophy use certain problems in contemporary information theory to elucidate the concerns of the early modern philosophers. This critical study attempts to uncover what was once called the logic of the theory of ideas, and to explore the questions it was meant to solve, given the limits of the ontological categories available. The authors begin their discussion of Descartes by examining his response to established models of perception in light of his understanding of the contemporary new science. Since Descartes proposed that any likeness between representation and the thing represented was unreliable, what was his solution to how an internal representation, an idea, gives us information? The authors' central claim is that Descartes's answer to the problem of how the mind knows matter involves a theory of 'intentional ideas.' This provocative divergence from recent discussions of Descartes's philosophy of mind, which have revolved around whether he is a 'realist' or a 'representationalist,' leads the authors to consider the idealism of Hume and Berkeley in light of Descartes's notion of the intentional. Hume and Berkeley, they maintain, explored alternatives to Descartes's conception, which led them to abandon traditional notions of meaning and truth. Descartes's Legacy concludes by suggesting that Descartes's picture can be reconciled with twentieth-century materialism, and asking whether the philosophy of mind can live without a primitive notion of the intentional. By shedding light on Descartes's crucial ontological innovation and on Hume's and Berkeley's reactions to it, the authors of Descartes's Legacy have repositioned early modern philosophy within a truly contemporary framework.

The Status of Birds in Britain and Ireland
This authoritative work of reference gives a detailed assessment of the status and distribution of every species on the British and Irish lists, for the first time since 1971. The Status of Birds in Britain and Ireland was written to update the British Ornithologists' Union's last full Checklist published under the same title as far back as 1971. Since then there have been remarkable changes in both distribution and abundance of the region's birds. Some species have become extinct as breeding birds, whereas others have colonised and even become quite common; many of our most familiar birds have suffered critical declines with changes in land use and climate. Dozens of new species have occurred as vagrants, and many previous vagrants now occur much more frequently. Furthermore, there has been a major revolution in bird taxonomy. The book has been written by two former Chairmen of the British Ornithologists' Union Records Committee, and long-serving members of the BOU Taxonomic Sub-Committee. It was compiled with the close cooperation of former colleagues in the BOU Records Committee and TSC, as well as key figures in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, to ensure it reflects the 'official' position in all the countries covered. The Status only includes records accepted by the committees responsible for each of the countries, follows the new taxonomy of the BOU, and uses English names approved by the International Ornithological Congress's working group on English names, as also adopted by the BOU. As such, the book is the only key text reflecting the 'official' status of birds throughout Britain and Ireland, as followed by bodies such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the British Trust for Ornithology, the Joint Nature Conservation Council, BirdWatch Ireland, the BOU itself, and many others. This book summarises all these changes and gives an up-to-date account of the status of the birds in Britain, Ireland and the Isle of Man.
Bankside

Bankside

On the south bank of the Thames and demarcated by Blackfriars and Tower Bridges lies the district known as Bankside, the Borough and Southwark. Its origin was in a Roman settlement nestling around the southern end of London Bridge, until the eighteenth century the only bridge across the Thames in London. Being separated only by the Thames from the City of London and outside the City's jurisdiction, it developed as a place for bawdy and disreputable entertainment and leisure - including the Globe Theatre made famous by performing William Shakespeare's plays. It was an area also sought out for its 'stews' which were some of London's most notorious brothels where every taste could be catered for. Borough High Street contained proportionately more inns and taverns than anywhere else in Britain - and some were immortalised by Chaucer and Dickens. The George alone survives to give some idea of what these ancient hostelries were like. From a time when London was a collection of discrete districts and villages, here is the long history of Bankside, the metropolis's disreputable and licentious yet vibrant, cosmopolitan underbelly.

ATLAS DIDN'T SHRUG BUT HIS NOSE ITCHED... ... and Stuart Preston Digit III's world was about to topple over. He had been kidnapped, drugged, shoved around, kicked, threatened, held at gunpoint, and dragged around D.C., with multiple psychos doing their best to get their hands on him and the information he had hidden in a locker in Union Station. How did an intern for the senate majority leader in the most liberal government ever elected wind up in the middle of political intrigue? Mere days before, he was a normal senate intern, working diligently to have a good addition to his r sum . How could he have known that his boss would use him as a political pawn to seize an entire industry under control of the federal government? Unbeknownst to Stu, his name and personal information were broadcast to the media as the spokesman for a watchdog group that didn't actually exist. Then, an impromptu speech before a throng of admiring protesters on the National Mall and on every news outlet made him an instant star. But not everyone was in his fan club, including even himself. He knew he had been duped but now he was in too deep. While millions of followers, who called themselves "Stupies", were tweeting back and forth, and scrawling "Where's Stu Digit?" graffiti all over town, he went under the radar to try to set the record straight and started a spiral of events that would embroil him in unexpected intrigue and mystery as his political foes jockeyed to reel him in. Strangers appeared out of nowhere to use him for their own advantage. Before he knew it, he was the unwilling companion of a dangerous agent, Louisa Marner, who was intent on delivering him and his information to her high-powered employer. Marner had skillfully stolen Stu from the sociopathic former spy Barton Gutman, who was not happy about losing his prize to the competition. Stu's brain fogged with truth serum, he had to use his wits (what little he possessed) to attempt to escape, trying his best to channel his TV hero, Mitchell Weldon from his favorite show, The Spy Who Got Fired. All the while Stu's fate was intertwined with the fate of an entire industry. In fact, individual liberty was at stake if he wound up in the wrong hands. And, to Stu, something he dearly loved was in peril. Fortunately, Stu was not alone. The moment he disappeared, thirty year veteran of international espionage Marion Morrison, leader of the clandestine Liberty League, and his lead operatives Justine Danaher and Phil Gilhooley snapped into action to rescue him . It would require skill, determination, and courage, as well as the one thing no intern ever figures he would need: air support With his helicopter crammed with electronic counter-measure technology, Morrison dared to fly into the most protected airspace in America. With Phil in the back of the chopper tracking Stu and Justine in her over-powered pick up truck giving chase, the game was on. But finding Stu was not going to be easy and the longer they stayed inside the Air Defense Identification Zone, the better the chances that their flight would end with a Sidewinder missile blowing them out of the sky. Will they be able to reach Stu before one of his pursuers manages to claim him for their evil purpose? Red Alert is a page turner from beginning to end and will have you jeering, cheering, smiling, and laughing. WARNING: Reading this book may cause liberals to become apoplectic
