The ability to connect theoretical macroeconomics to the analysis of the economic and political performance of a given country is an essential skill for global investors. In Country Analysis: Understanding Economic and Political Performance, David M. Currie takes a unique analytical approach to the subject, clearly demonstrating the relationship between theory and application in investing practices. This valuable book shows how to interpret country performance and provides the practising investor with sufficient background on economic principles to be able to understand and interpret country summaries that appear in business periodicals and other media. It covers key topics such as the Washington Consensus and the three major categories of economic decisions - fiscal policy, monetary policy and trade policy. It includes an important chapter on the political aspect of government performance, to give the reader an understanding of economic decisions in their true context. Country Analysis explains the reasoning behind the criteria used in evaluating country risk and economic performance, without the need for a sophisticated understanding of economics or mathematics. Each chapter includes a series of text boxes that include real-life examples from business periodicals to reinforce what is discussed and enable readers to practice identifying and interpreting relevant information. Practitioners making investment decisions in global markets, as well as students in MBA and other courses, will find this immensely practical book a valuable aid to critical decision making.
This is an upper-level introduction to the German Reformer Martin Luther, who by his thought and action started the Reformation movement. Martin Luther was one of the most influential and important figures of the second millennium. His break with Rome and the development of separate Evangelical churches affected not just the religious life of Europe but also social and political landscapes as well. More books have been written about Luther than nearly any other historical figure. Despite all these books, Luther remains an enigmatic figure. This book proposes to examine a number of key moments in Luther's life and fundamental theological positions that remain perplexing to most students. This book will also present an introduction to the primary sources available to a student and important secondary works that ought to be consulted. Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.

Preaching that Confronts Confederate Monuments
David M. Stark

Confederate monuments preach—at times subtly, at other times overtly—about who we are, who God is, and how we should live together. David M. Stark looks at the way many Confederate monuments provided ongoing opportunities for commemorative speeches and ceremonies that would entrench racist and white supremacist ideologies in the American South. Stark examines key speeches and proclamations given around monuments to the Lost Cause, such as Julian Carr's Silent Sam speech (1913), and Archer Anderson's speech at the dedication of a monument to Robert E. Lee (1890), reading these as theological and homiletic moments. Stark then moves on to construct a homiletic that can confront such monuments and the racist preaching ideologies around them.In developing this counter-homiletic, Stark analyzes the preaching strategies written into Confederate monuments and highlights best practices from recent counter-proclamations that deconstruct the troubling rhetoric and theology of Confederate monument dedication speeches. Finally, Stark presents insights from naming commission reports and clergy interviews about the values, mission, and leadership needed to work for ongoing change.

Order NEW to get Second Edition (2019) including changes in data and predictions now that five years have passed. Some authors predict that in our future we face elimination by superintelligent machines, others predict destruction due to climate change, yet others predict massive unemployment and economic collapse due to automation. We have been told of advantages and dangers of nanotechnology, genetic engineering, and other technologies. Each author has largely ignored the other points of view. But, there can be only ONE FUTURE. This is a refreshing new look at our next fifty years from a former university professor who holds advanced degrees in electrical engineering, physics and psychology. The findings to date on climate change, automation, economics, history of technology, and future digital and other technological changes have been thoroughly reviewed, and a synthesis offered that includes all these forces in a single future. The result predicts an incredible future in which the precise details of our technological progress cannot be determined in advance, but a future which is predicted to unfold with ever more increasing rates of change. The best way to prepare for this future, a future already well underway, will be to take advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the changes driving our future, the opportunities offered by the very technologies driving us toward our incredible future. The future, fraught with danger, can be surprisingly bright -- if we can make use of the opportunities implicit in the challenges to come.
A collection of original poems exploring themes of memory, nostalgia, loss, love, and art. "Making Up Time" refers both to inventing" time past and reconciling or offsetting it. This double attitude towards time is used to explore childhood, the loss of loved ones, the transience and permanence of art, and how memory works.
Many cultures of the world use 'spiritual healing' methods (and often successfully) in treating illness. But a couple from New Mexico finds out-the hard way-about difficulties in reconciling these methods with modern American society and its current understanding of medicine and healing. This tale is based on their true story.Nathan and Elizabeth are a free-spirited couple, with children, living 'off the grid' in the mountains of New Mexico. When Elizabeth becomes ill, they choose alternative medicine methods rather than the conventional (Western Medicine) treatment protocol. After having only a poor response to holistic medicine, the couple hears of a 'trance medium' healer in Brazil. They visit the man's healing center-in a small, colorful village in Brazil-where Elizabeth has a remarkable recovery. Though based on a true story, this narrative borders on the paranormal and metaphysical, and it challenges the reader in ways similar to one of the author's favorite axioms: Don't Believe Everything You Think.Later in the novel, Nathan-at wits' end due to a distressing family situation-rejoins his oldest and best friend, where they explore another way of 'being in the world' and finding peace, through the teachings of an Indian spiritual master.
As people in business, everybody is more than familiar with the word "Brand." Few, however, have the foggiest notion what a brand really is...and no clear road on how to build one.We have been raised in a sophisticated world of business in which the word "brand" has become a nice little marketing buzzword. However, even in the world of professional design, marketing, and advertising, few really understand exactly what a true brand is, how to build one, or how to make it work as hard as it should.Removing the mystery and providing a crystal-clear formula for building a powerful and impactful brand, David Flanagan boils it all down into "What you say and How you say it." He takes the confusion surrounding the world of real branding and makes it all incredibly easy to understand and use.

Four years after she went missing, her wealthy husband, Cal Harris, was arrested and charged with her murder. With neither a body nor a murder weapon, Cal was shockingly tried and convicted of her murder. Then new evidence surfaced. His conviction was overturned, and a new trial granted. But once again, he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. That conviction, too, was overturned on appeal. The saga continued as Cal went on trial for the third time. This one ended in a mistrial.By the time Cal went on trial the fourth time, Michele had been missing for nearly 15 years. Defense investigator, David M. Beers, worked on the Cal Harris case from start-to-finish. His account, "Reign of Injustice," walks you through the details and events of the case never before revealed. It provides a inside view of the scandalous case facts you will not find elsewhere, including why he considers Cal's story a reign of injustice.
