A thorough examination of the influence of David Hume's work early American political thought. This book explores the reception of David Hume's political thought in eighteenth-century America. It presents a challenge to standard interpretations that assume Hume's thought had little influence in early America. Eighteenth-century Americans are often supposed to have ignored Hume's philosophical writings and to have rejected entirely Hume's "Tory" History of England. James Madison, if he used Hume's ideas in Federalist No. 10, it is commonly argued, thought best to do so silently -- open allegiance to Hume was a liability. Despite renewed debate about the impact of Hume's political ideas in America, existing scholarship is often narrow and highly speculative. WereHume's works available in eighteenth-century America? If so, which works? Where? When? Who read Hume? To what avail? To answer questions of that sort, this books draws upon a wide assortment of evidence. Early American bookcatalogues, periodical publications, and the writings of lesser-light thinkers are used to describe Hume's impact on the social history of ideas, an essential context for understanding Hume's influence on many of the classic texts of early American political thought. Hume's Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects, was readily available, earlier, and more widely, than scholars have supposed. The History of England was read most frequently ofall, however, and often in distinctive ways. Hume's History, which presented the British constitution as a patch-work product of chance historical developments, informed the origins of the American Revolution and Hume's subsequent reception through the late eighteenth century. The 326 subscribers to the first American edition of Hume's History [published in Philadelphia in 1795/96] are more representative of the History's friendly reception in enlightened America than are its few critics. Thomas Jefferson's latter-day rejection of Hume's political thought foreshadowed Hume's falling reputation in nineteenth-century America. MARK G. In April 1918 history’s first tank-vs-tank battle pitted the British Mark IV against the German A7V on the Western Front. Featuring full-colour artwork, this is the story of this momentous encounter, which foreshadowed the massed armoured warfare of World War II and beyond.The German A7V and the British Mark IV were similar in weight, size, and speed, but differed significantly in armour, armament and maneuverability. The A7V had thicker armour, and had nearly double the horsepower per ton. The Mark IV’s pair of side-mounted 6pdr cannons forced the vehicle to present its side arc to an enemy in order to fire one of its main guns. Possessing twice as many machine guns as the Mark IV, the A7V had a frontally mounted 57mm gun that proved capable of defeating the Mark IV’s armour. The Mark IV’s rhomboid design proved superior in crossing trenches, climbing obstacles and moving over rough terrain.This book explores the first tank-versus-tank engagement in history, the fighting around Villers-Bretonneux, and showcases the British Mark IV and German A7V designs. Although not purpose-built to combat enemy armour, both vehicles proved the viability of such operations, which during the postwar period led to key advances in suspension, armour, gunsights, ammunition, and command and control. While the British continued to develop their armoured forces, German armour development never materialized, and only in the postwar period did they address the issue.

This book offers a fresh appraisal of the identity and involvement of the subalterns in Mark, arguing that the presence of the subalterns in Mark is a possible hermeneutical tool for re-reading the Bible in a postcolonial context like India. Part I paves the way for a creative discussion on Mark and its interpreters in the rest of the study by looking at the issue of the spread of Christianity and missionary attempts at biblical interpretations that did not take the life of the natives into account. Many insights from the postcolonial situation can be found in the contextual interpretations such as liberation, feminist, postcolonial feminist and subaltern. Part II considers colonial rule in Palestine and examines some Markan texts showing the potential role of the subalterns. It is argued that due to colonial rule, the native people suffered in terms of their identity, religion and culture. There was conflict between Galilee and Jerusalem mainly on religious issues and the victims of domination were the poor peasants and the artisans in Galilee. A dialogue and interaction with the Markan milieu was possible in the research and so the marginal and subaltern groups were effectively understood by exegeting Mark 10:17-31, 7:24-30 and 5:1-20 and showing the postcolonial issues such as the poor and their representation, gender, race, hybridity, class, nationalism, and purity respectively. Although, to the casual eye, all British tanks of World War I look much the same, the Mark V is quite outstanding and has a strong claim to be the tank that won the Great War. David Hume is best known for his work on political philosophy. However, he wrote a series of essays on money, population and international trade which must rank among the major economic writings of the 18th century. Certainly they influenced Adam Smith and have a sparkling quality that still makes them worth reading today. His statement of the so-called 'specie-flow mechanism' constituted his answer to the mercantilist concern with the maintenance of a chronic surplus in the balance of payments. He also put forward what is now known as the 'theory of creeping inflation' and advocated the notion that political freedom flows from economic freedom. James Steuart was a British mercantilist, the last in a long line stretching back to the 16th century. He advocated the entire armoury of mercantilist policies: the regulation of foreign trade to induce an inflow of gold, the promotion of industry by inducing cheap raw material imports, protective duties on imported manufactured goods, encouragement of exports, particularly finished goods because they are labour-intensive, control of the size of population by emigration and immigration to keep wages low, all capped by a denial of Hume's argument that an inflow of gold will only raise prices and thus drive gold abroad.
Ricardo's intellectual appeal, both amongst his contemporaries and more recently, rested on his remarkable gift for heroic abstractions: he seized hold of a wide range of significant problems with a simple analytical model and yielded, after a few elementary manipulations, dramatic conclusions of a distinctly practical nature. In short, precisely the art Keynes was to use so successfully. Although his reputation ebbed towards the end of the nineteenth century, he was still being acclaimed by economists as diverse as Marx and Marshall. Ironically, since Sraffa's work revived Ricardo's reputation, this most bourgeois of economists has been brought back into contemporary debate by economists seeking Marx's intellectual mentors. This selection of recent articles reflects the renewal of interest in Ricardo's work.

The high point of the Christian year is Passion week. The suffering and death of Christ is the focal point in salvation history, and the Passion narratives of our Gospel writers comprise the very heart of the gospel. The gospel is called "the word of the cross" (1 Cor 1:18). In his brief summary of the gospel in his first letter to the Corinthians, the apostle Paul writes, "For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures (15:3,4).For a religion to mark its beginning with the crucifixion of its founder is exceedingly strange. But for the past two millennia the story of Christ's suffering and death has fascinated people all over the world. From every angle that people might look at the Passion story, it grabs them. In his massive work on The Death of the Messiah (p. viii), Raymond Brown illustrates the centrality and significance of the Passion narrative: Seen from the aesthetic side, there is nothing in the Gospels that has given us such glorious music, or has inspired such magnificent art, as the Passion story. From the literary point of view, this story has even entered our everyday language. People still speak of a "Judas kiss," of selling Christ for 30 pieces of silver, of washing our hands of an embarrassing situation - all found in the Passion story.From the historical standpoint, no event in Christ's public life was seen by so many eye witnesses. From the first century up to the present, churches around the world have recited the Apostles Creed, in which they affirm that Christ "suffered under Pontius Pilate." The death of Christ is an unassailable historical event on which the Christian faith rests.Seen from a theological point of view, the Passion story assures us that through the death of Christ our sins have been atoned for, and that we have been delivered from death and despair through the death of an innocent substitute. That Jesus of Nazareth was crucified under Pontius Pilate can be discovered also from the Roman historian, Tacitus, but that he died for our sins is something only the gospel can tell us. Moreover, the Passion story has always been at the centre of Christian devotion and meditation, and the church loses much, if it overlooks the wonderful opportunity to proclaim the message of the cross, especially at Eastertide.Preaching from narrative material, however, is not always easy, and the following chapters were written, in part, to illustrate how this moving story of Christ's suffering and death can be presented in sermon form. However, these meditations were written also with the Christian reader in mind, who may not have access to some of the rich literature that is available in this area of NT studies.There is some disagreement among scholars over where precisely the Passion narrative begins. Not all would include, as I have, the anointing of Jesus at Bethany and the Last Supper. However, even though the actual sufferings of Christ began in Gethsemane, these accounts are an integral part of the Passion story. We will follow basically the Marcan account of Christ's suffering but weave in some materials from other Gospels to round out the picture.It is our hope and prayer that these studies will serve as a handbook for teachers and preachers as they expound the Passion narrative. However, these reflections on the accounts of Christ's suffering, death and resurrection, may also be of help to serious Bible readers who are interested in a devotional approach to the biblical text. Although I have refrained from injecting bibliographical information into these studies, I am indebted to many scholars who have painstakingly examined Mark's account of our Lord's Passion.
