Time Use in Domestic Settings Throughout the Life Course

Time Use in Domestic Settings Throughout the Life Course

Giulia Maria Dotti Sani

Springer International Publishing AG
2018
nidottu
The volume is the first to take a life-course approach to the study of domestic work in Italy. It provides a coherent and systemic overview of time spent on housework, childcare and adult care over the life course. While most previous research has focused on the time adult women and men spend on housework and the division of domestic chores among partners, this unique contribution studies the amount of time spent on chores by Italians in different phases of the life course. It addresses relevant aspects often neglected in time use studies, such as the socialization to domestic chores among children, teenagers and young adults living in the parental home and the reproduction of gender inequalities in housework at later stages of the life course.

Bringing Out the Best in Human Effectiveness will greatly interest anyone aspiring to improve the human condition. This book focuses on an Upward Bound program conducted at the University of West Florida between 1979 and 1983. Federally funded Upward Bound programs offer academic instruction, individual tutoring, and counseling for low-income, disadvantaged high school students. This study examines what the program meant and continues to mean to participants. It is this meaning that provides context for important lessons in transformative teaching and learning. This is the long-untold story of participant observers and the lessons they learned about the kind of teaching and learning that changes lives.

Dispositions as Habits of Mind

Dispositions as Habits of Mind

Dispositions as Habits of Mind provides opportunities for candidates in teacher education programs, which focus on nurturing and assessing dispositions, to see the habits of mind for making professional conduct more intelligent, practice them, and receive feedback about their performance. Some scholars have pointed out that the rush by many teacher education programs to meet accreditation mandates with regard to "dispositions" has generated a host of measures for assessing dispositions and very little focus on programs first establishing some conceptual understanding of the construct, and then teaching candidates about dispositions. This work on dispositions highlights the serious effort to help teachers and other professional school personnel to form habits and use them as active means in making their professional conduct more effective and intelligent.

"UNICEF thought that with my mother they would get a pretty princess to show up at galas. What they really got was a badass soldier." - Luca Dotti, Audrey Hepburn's son. Warrior: Audrey Hepburn completes the story arc of Robert Matzen's Dutch Girl: Audrey Hepburn and World War II. Hepburn's experiences in wartime, including the murder of family members, her survival through combat and starvation conditions, and work on behalf of the Dutch Resistance, gave her the determination to become a humanitarian for UNICEF and the fearlessness to charge into war-torn countries in the Third World on behalf of children and their mothers in desperate need. She set the standard for celebrity humanitarians and--according to her son Luca Dotti--ultimately gave her life for the causes she espoused.

25 years after her passing, Audrey Hepburn remains the most beloved of all Hollywood stars. Several biographies have chronicled her stardom, but none has covered her intense experiences through five years of Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. According to her son, 'The war made my mother who she was.' Audrey Hepburn's war included participation in the Dutch Resistance, working as a doctor's assistant during the 'Bridge Too Far' battle of Arnhem, the brutal execution of her uncle, and the ordeal of the Hunger Winter of 1944. She also had to contend with the fact that her father was a Nazi agent and her mother was pro-Nazi for the first two years of the occupation. Audrey's own reminiscences, new interviews with people who knew her in the war, wartime diaries, and research in classified Dutch archives shed light on the riveting, untold story of Audrey Hepburn under fire in World War II.

The work reviews interrogation history from a military perspective. (Originally published by the U.S. Government's National Defense Intelligence College in color.) James A. Stone is a Special Agent with the USAF Office of Special Investigations; David P. Shoemaker is a Special Agent with AFOSI; Nicholas R. Dotti is a U.S. Army major with Special Operations Command.
