The existing textbooks on adolescent development are predominantly written for undergraduate psychology majors and have little to say about what the theories and research mean for teachers in schools working with adolescent students. The key feature that guided the development of this book and that sets it apart from other textbooks on adolescent development is the focus on application of concepts to educational settings and the practical implications for teachers. Also available with MyLab Education® This title is also available with MyLab Education—an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with the text to engage students and improve results. Within its structured environment, students see key concepts demonstrated through real classroom video footage, practice what they learn, test their understanding, and receive feedback to guide their learning and ensure they master key learning outcomes. Introduction to Coupled Theories in Solid Mechanics

Introduction to Coupled Theories in Solid Mechanics

The coupled response of solid materials to multiple fields, such as deformation, heat, electricity, and magnetism, plays a crucial role in modern engineering applications, from soft robotics to energy storage. Advancing theoretical models and numerical implementations for these coupled behaviours in solids is a challenging and exciting frontier in mechanics. This textbook introduces some foundational coupled theories in solid mechanics by starting from fundamental principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, and electrodynamics, and specializing to model particular 'smart materials'. Numerous representative simulations are provided, demonstrating key coupled behaviours and engineering applications for each theory. The large deformation coupled theories discussed in this book have been numerically implemented in the open-source finite element program FEniCS, and representative simulations which illustrate key coupled behaviors are presented for each theory. The FEniCS codes for the representative simulations shown in this book are available online on the book's companion website: . Ideal for graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers, Introduction to Coupled Theories in Solid Mechanics serves as both an introduction to the field and a foundational resource for building the coupled theories and simulation tools of the future.

The authors of the first edition were chosen for their internationally recognized expertise in their respective fields: the history and literature of Israel; postbiblical Judaism; biblical archaeology; and the origins and early literature of Christianity. In this second edition, all chapters have been updated and thoroughly revised, under the direction of a new volume editor, Bruce D. Chilton. More than 22 new maps, 90 new photographs and a full-color section help illustrate the book.

Rethinking Culture in Health Communication An interdisciplinary overview of health communication using a cultural lens—uniquely focused on social interactions in health contexts Patients, health professionals, and policymakers embody cultural constructs that impact healthcare processes. Rethinking Culture in Health Communication explores the ways in which culture influences healthcare, introducing new approaches to understanding social relationships and health policies as a dynamic process involving cultural values, expectations, motivations, and behavioral patterns. This innovative textbook integrates theories and practices in health communication, public health, and medicine to help students relate fundamental concepts to their personal experiences and develop an awareness of how all individuals and groups are shaped by culture. The authors present a foundational framework explaining how cultures can be understood from four perspectives—Magic Consciousness, Mythic Connection, Perspectival Thinking, and Integral Fusion—to examine existing theories, social norms, and clinical practices in health-related contexts. Detailed yet accessible chapters discuss culture and health behaviors, interpersonal communication, minority health and healthcare delivery, cultural consciousness, social interactions, sociopolitical structure, and more. The text features examples of how culture can create challenges in access, process, and outcomes of healthcare services and includes scenarios in which individuals and institutions hold different or incompatible ethical views. The text also illustrates how cultural perspectives can shape the theoretical concepts emerged in caregiver-patient communication, provider-patient interactions, social policies, public health interventions, and other real-life settings. Written by two leading health communication scholars, this textbook: Highlights the sociocultural, interprofessional, clinical, and ethical aspects of health communication Explores the intersections of social relationships, cultural tendencies, and health theories and behaviors Examines the various forms, functions, and meanings of health, illness, and healthcare in a range of cultural contexts Discusses how cultural elements in social interactions are essential to successful health interventions Includes foundational overviews of health communication and of culture in health-related fields Discusses culture in health administration, moral values in social policies, and ethics in medical development Incorporates various aspects and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic as a cultural phenomenon through the lens of health communication Rethinking Culture in Health Communication is an ideal textbook for courses in health communication, particularly those focused on interpersonal communication, as well as in cross-cultural communication, cultural phenomenology, medical sociology, social work, public health, and other health-related fields.

Almost half of all Americans suffer from a chronic medical condition. The most common conditions are high blood pressure, arthritis, respiratory diseases, depression, pain, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It's time to be more involved in your health care and start asking "why?" For instance: - Why do Americans have so many health problems when they consume so many drugs? - Why are Americans so sick when they can improve their health without doctors, hospitals, and drug therapies? - Why is the United States making successful strides in disease treatment but not prevention? These are complicated questions, but it's possible that the very drugs Americans consume are contributing to chronic health issues, along with unhealthy choices such as smoking, consuming alcohol, and eating processed and fast foods. By understanding the business of medicine as well as the factors that put you at risk, you can take concrete steps to improve your health or prevent it from deteriorating. Ask the right questions and start learning How to Live a Happy, Healthy, Wealthy, and Safe Life.

Can't Stop Walking: Every Walk Must First Begin with a Step, Purpose, and Direction is a stunning and incisive nonfictional narrative which critiques some of the cultural, traditional, and societal issues which impacted and challenged the lives of many Liberians, especially the youth who suffered, bled, and died in their ignorance during the Liberian Civil War. This is a book uniquely written to bring the readers mentally closer to some information and experiences that may seem unrealistic but true, inconceivable or trivia but factual. The book reveals the tireless and unwavering efforts made by two friends bound together in one faith and purpose with a desire to change the mindset of youths who were actively involved in a civil war. It discusses how these two friends nonviolently challenged the culture, tradition, and societal elites of a small town by engaging the youth and elders through the "Trinity Plan" and helped transform a struggling church threatened by dogmas and traditional practices.
