Eric Cyril Bellquist, Berkeley Professor: A Biographical Memoir
For a time, Eric Bellquist was thought of by many of his students and peers as synonymous with the University of California at Berkeley itself. He began as an undergraduate at Berkeley in 1925, where he ultimately became the nation's leading political scientist of Scandinavian government and politics. For over 50 years he was intimately involved in the university's development into a major institution of higher learning. This biography, written by his son, is a tribute to his memory. It includes tales about the university unlikely to be found elsewhere, from the days of Andy Smith's Wonder Team through the "six years war" of the Free Speech Movement and campus political upheaval, with which he was intimately, if not publicly, involved. Eric Bellquist is often remembered as a prominent opponent of the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII; he served in the Office of War Information during WWII, in the State Department after the war, and in the Foreign Service in Stockholm from 1949 to 1951. This book can be recommended for those interested in California history, the history of the University of California, and of Swedish immigration to the United States.

Eric Gill (1882–1940) is one of the twentieth century’s most controversial artists. This illustrated introduction focuses on the clarity of Gill’s drawn and cut line. It explores his genius as a letter cutter, wood engraver, sculptor and typographer in the light of his refined finished drawings and preparatory sketches. Like all modernists of the early twentieth-century, he used stylised form, explicit sexuality and the influence of other cultures to position himself at the forefront of the avant-garde. An outsider and a radical, Gill nevertheless became one the establishment’s favourite artists, with his patrons including the Catholic Church, the Lord Chancellor’s office, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Mint, the London Underground, the BBC, the Post Office and the League of Nations. The authors illuminate here the quality, complexities and contradictions of Gill’s fascinating life and art.

Few filmmakers have taken the principle of the ‘talking picture’ so far as Eric Rohmer, the internationally reknowned director of the Moral Tales, Comedies and Proverbs, and Tales of the Four Seasons cycles. Occasionally dismissed as precious or overly literary, Rohmer’s features may leave the impression that there is more to listen to than to look at. Yet as the secretive director (b. Maurice Schérer in 1920) points out, dialogue is no less engaging than the best gunfights, and if his characters prefer discussing love to making it, they are no less the ‘heroes’ of the stories they tell.Charges of political conservatism aside, the author of My Night at Maud’s, Summer and such period films as Perceval and the all-digital The Lady and the Duke emerges - like Hitchcock before him - as a singular inventor of cinematic forms. This critical overview, which contains an extensive bibliography and a filmography, will appeal to students of Film Studies, French Studies, and enthusiasts.

I wonder, "Why me? Why have I survived?"' Eric Clapton, Rolling Stone, 1991The million-selling, Grammy award-winning master of the blues guitar, Eric Clapton still generates the kind of adulation that led fans to graffiti London underground stations in 1965 with the statement, 'Clapton is God'. And yet Clapton has more thanan astonishing professional story to tell: he has survived a personal journey blighted by tragedy and heartbreak. In 1990 he lost four of his closest friends in a helicopter crash, followed a year later by the devastating death of his four-year-old son Conor. In this definitive study of the man and his music, Michael Schumacher reveals with compassion and insight both the depths of Clapton's sorrow and the roots of his remarkable musical power. From his days with the Yardbirds, through spells with Cream and Derek and the Dominoes to a solo career that has spanned over a quarter of a century, Schumacher superbly charts the development of an enduring guitar legend.

This book covers the important West Indian scholar and politician.Born in Trinidad, Eric Williams (1911-81) founded the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago's first modern political party in 1956, led the country to independence from the British culminating in 1962, and became the nation's first prime minister. Before entering politics, he was a professor at Howard University and wrote several books, including the classic ""Capitalism"" and ""Slavery"". In the first scholarly biography of Williams, Colin Palmer provides insights into Williams' personality that illuminate his life as a scholar and politician and his tremendous influence on the historiography and politics of the Caribbean.Palmer focuses primarily on the fourteen-year period of struggles for independence in the Anglophone Caribbean, when Williams was at the center of most of the conflicts and challenges that defined the region. Looking at the ideas of Williams, as well as those of his Caribbean and African peers, Palmer demonstrates how the development of the modern Caribbean was inextricably intertwined with the evolution of a regional anticolonial consciousness.
