Die besagte Quellenstelle beinhaltet die Kapitel 13,1 bis 14,4. Die Vita Hadriani ist eine der Kaiserbiographien, die in der sogenannten Historia Augusta enthalten sind. Diese sp tantike Sammlung r mischer Kaiserbiographien, die von Hadrian (117-138 n. Chr.) bis Numerianus (seine Regierungszeit endete 285 n. Chr.) reicht, ist angeblich Ende des 3. bzw. Anfang des 4. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. von sechs verschiedenen Autoren niedergeschrieben worden, deren Namen wie folgt lauten: Aelius Spartianus, Iulius Capitolinus, Vulcacius Gallicanus, Aelius Lampridius, Trebellius Pollio und Flavius Vopiscus. Professor Doktor Holger Sonnabend bemerkt zu dieser Sammlung, dass es sich hierbei um "die einzige zusammenh ngende literarische Quelle f r die Geschichte der r mischen Kaiserzeit in der Phase zwischen Hadrian und Numerianus, also zwischen 117 und 285 n. Chr." handelt, deren Quellenwert lange Zeit umstritten war. Nicht nur wird angezweifelt, dass sie von sechs verschiedenen Autoren niedergeschrieben wurde, sondern auch dass sie aus der Zeit der Kaiser Diokletian und Konstantin stamme. Heute ist man in der Forschung der Ansicht, dass die Historia Augusta wohl von einem anonymen Autor gegen Ende des 4. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. verfasst worden ist und dass ihr Quellenwert nicht untersch tzt werden darf, da ber s mtliche Kaiser (auch die inoffiziellen) von Hadrian bis Numerianus berichtet wird (lediglich die Berichte ber die Herrscher zwischen den Jahren 244 und 253 n. Chr. sind verloren gegangen). Im Folgenden soll nun unter Punkt 2 in knapper Darstellung auf die Vita Hadriani und auf Kaiser Hadrians Reisen eingegangen werden,

Chr. und l sst sich so in das Zeitalter der Adoptivkaiser einordnen. Eine Zeit, in welcher nur der Beste ein Anrecht auf die Kaisernachfolge haben sollte. Hadrian, von Trajan zum Besten ausgew hlt, musste sich wie jeder r mische Kaiser in bestimmten Tugenden bew hren, um sp ter unter die Heroen aufgenommen zu werden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird es wichtig sein zu sehen, wie Hadrian mit den zentralen Tugenden der Prinzipatszeit umging und wie er sich bew hrte. Stellte er sich der Herausforderung, in die Nachfolge eines Augustus zu treten? Die liberalitas principi, die seit Augustus bestand, war vor allem auf die plebs urbana zugeschnitten. Hadrian als Wohlt ter der Menschheit? Konnte er durch seine sozialpolitischen Ma nahmen sich nur in ein Schema der vorgegeben Politik einreihen, um sich so in den kaiserlichen Tugenden zu beweisen oder versuchte er das vorhandene System zu verbessern? Au erdem wird es wichtig sein, zu sehen, welche Gesinnung hinter manchen Taten stand. In der Forschung geh rt Hadrian zu den interessanten Figuren der antiken Welt, mit welcher sich in den letzten beiden Jahrhunderten zahlreiche Histori-ker auseinandersetzten. Auch die kaiserlichen Tugenden finden in den meisten Darstellungen Erw hnung.

In his De peccato originali (1679), Hadriaan Beverland (1650-1716) presented his thesis that sex was the original sin and a vital part of human nature. Building on contemporary insights into the history of the text of the Bible, he criticised the hypocritical attitudes among the religious and social elite of his day concerning the biblical text and sexual morality. The work became notorious in the seventeenth century and led to its author’s banishment. In the eighteenth century, it exerted considerable influence on the way in which many in Europe came to see sexuality. This annotated edition with English translation also includes a comprehensive introduction that includes a contextualization of the De peccato originali and its impact.
