Quadrature Theory

Quadrature Theory

Helmut Brass; Knut Petras

American Mathematical Society
2011
sidottu
Every book on numerical analysis covers methods for the approximate calculation of definite integrals. The authors of this book provide a complementary treatment of the topic by presenting a coherent theory of quadrature methods that encompasses many deep and elegant results as well as a large number of interesting (solved and open) problems. The inclusion of the word ``theory'' in the title highlights the authors' emphasis on analytical questions, such as the existence and structure of quadrature methods and selection criteria based on strict error bounds for quadrature rules. Systematic analyses of this kind rely on certain properties of the integrand, called ``co-observations,'' which form the central organizing principle for the authors' theory, and distinguish their book from other texts on numerical integration. A wide variety of co-observations are examined, as a detailed understanding of these is useful for solving problems in practical contexts. While quadrature theory is often viewed as a branch of numerical analysis, its influence extends much further. It has been the starting point of many far-reaching generalizations in various directions, as well as a testing ground for new ideas and concepts. The material in this book should be accessible to anyone who has taken the standard undergraduate courses in linear algebra, advanced calculus, and real analysis.
One Woman Against the Reich

One Woman Against the Reich

Helmut W Ziefle

Kregel Publications,U.S.
2003
pokkari
While no one suffered under Hitler more than the Jews, truly committed Christians found themselves facing two terrible alternatives: conform to or be consumed by the monstrous political ambitions and genocidal blood lust of the Third Reich. This one-of-a-kind true story depicts the courageous Ziefle family, Christians standing firm against the tidal wave of Nazism. While Hitler's tyranny undermined, contradicted, and countermanded every effort she made, one woman instilled in her children a commitment to remain faithful to God. Its lessons will be a welcomed encouragement to contemporary Christians facing equally real cultural pressures and seduction in the twenty-first century.
Small Electric Motors

Small Electric Motors

Users of small electric motors face the difficult task of selecting the best motor for their particular drive application. The technical requirements of the drive, the level of safety needed and the cost factor must all be considered. The choice is made more difficult by the continuous arrival of newly developed types of motor. This book, a translation from German, aims to help those involved in specifying, developing, manufacturing and marketing small motors by reporting the current state of the art. The various types of motor, together with their differing characteristics and their relationship to small drives are covered. Developments such as brushless DC motors and stepper motors are discussed, as well as the use of electronic control which widens the spectrum of small motor applications. Also covered are measurement and noise problems. This book will be of interest to engineers, physicists and technicians involved in the design, manufacture and application of small motors in the laboratory, the factory and in service.
Books and Libraries in Early England
The essays in this second volume from Helmut Gneuss are devoted to the study of books, their readers, and libraries in medieval England, especially in the Anglo-Saxon period. The selection opens with a survey of the history of the medieval English library, followed by detailed studies of Anglo-Saxon book production. These also examine its relation in the 9th century to King Alfred's plan for educational reform, and to the intellectual history of the 10th century. Two articles deal with liturgical books, and include the standard classified list of liturgical manuscripts. To end, there is an analysis of the earliest modern catalogue of books with Old English texts, that by George Hickes, and an investigation of the history of the Latin hymnal in Britain.
Envy

Envy

Helmut Schoeck

Liberty Fund Inc
1987
nidottu
Envy was first published in German in 1966, then in an English translation in 1970. This classic study is one of the few books to explore extensively the many facets of envy -- "a drive which lies at the core of man's life as a social being." Ranging widely over literature, philosophy, psychology, and the social sciences, Professor Schoeck -- a distinguished sociologist and anthropologist -- elucidates both the constructive and destructive consequences of envy in social life. Perhaps most importantly he demonstrates that not only the impetus toward a totalitarian regime but also the egalitarian impulse in democratic societies are alike in being rooted in envy.
Germany: A Nation in Its Time

Germany: A Nation in Its Time

Helmut Walser Smith

Liveright Publishing Corporation
2020
sidottu
For nearly a century, conventional historians have depicted Germany as a rabidly nationalist land, born in a sea of aggression, its nineteenth-century ascent accompanied by militarism and brought to a murderous apex in the Third Reich. Not so, asserts Helmut Walser Smith, who, beginning in 1500, reveals pacific conceptions of the nation and allows us to see the Nazis’ extreme form of nationalism not as the dark culmination point of German history but as an essential episode in Germany’s centuries-long history of continually conceiving the nation in radically different ways. Whether chronicling the Thirty Years War, the German Enlightenment, the Weimar Republic, the Holocaust or the era of Angela Merkel, Smith has created a new standard for the twenty-first-century.
Modern Chinese Writers

Modern Chinese Writers

Helmut Martin; Jeffrey C. Kinkley

M.E. Sharpe
1992
sidottu
This volume gathers personal reflections on life and literature by 44 of China's leading authors. It aims to illustrate how Chinese society and its creative writing have supported, competed and fought with each other for the past 40 years and more. Much of what is revealed here is mundane, but the pressure of bringing art to social and political causes, indeed the universal pressure to survive, forges this collection into a very human document. The strengths and weaknesses of these essays offer a window on those of modern Chinese literature itself. Realism was the favoured literary doctrine of the day, and, reflecting this, most of these essays speak for themselves - about war, revolution, betrayal and commitment.

A DREAM OF DEMOCRACY is a ten-year-old boy's escape from the Russian invasion of East Prussia at the end of WWII in January 1945. With his mother and sister aboard his aunt's horse-drawn wagon, they fled with thousands of refugees from the barbaric Red Army. Since Hitler and the German Army failed to evacuate or protect German civilians on the Eastern-Front., they ran for their lives on the wagon train west with Russians soldiers on their heals who were determined to seek revenge from Hitler's previous invasion of Russia--pillaging as they went, raping women of all ages and killing the men and boys.
