This thesis discusses the power scaling of ultrashort pulses in enhancement cavities, utilized in particular for frequency conversion processes, such as Thomson scattering and high-harmonic generation. Using custom optics for ultrashort-pulse enhancement cavities, it demonstrates for the first time that at the envisaged power levels, the mitigation of thermal effects becomes indispensable even in cavities comprising solely reflective optics. It also studies cavities with large beams, albeit with low misalignment sensitivity, as a way to circumvent intensity-induced mirror damage. Average powers of several hundred kilowatts are demonstrated, which benefit hard x-ray sources based on Thomson scattering. Furthermore, pulses as short as 30 fs were obtained at more than 10 kW of average power and employed for high-harmonic generation with photon energies exceeding 100 eV at 250 MHz repetition rate, paving the way for frequency comb spectroscopy in this spectral region.

This thesis combines methods from statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics to advance research on the pattern formation in active fluids in several directions. In particular, it focuses on mesoscale turbulence, a state observed in microswimmer suspensions, which is characterized by the emergence of dynamic vortex patterns. The first major contribution concerns the bottom-up derivation of a frequently used continuum model of mesoscale turbulence from a set of particle-resolved stochastic equations. Utilizing the model, mesoscale turbulence is shown to induce nontrivial transport properties including a regime of optimal diffusion. The thesis then explores possible strategies of control. One of these relies on an external field that leads to stripe-like structures and can even suppress patterns entirely. The other involves geometric confinement realized by strategically placed obstacles that can reorganize the flow into a variety of ordered vortex structures. The turbulence transition inside an obstacle lattice is shown to have an intriguing analogy to an equilibrium transition in the Ising universality class. As a whole, this thesis provides important contributions to the understanding and control of turbulence in active fluids, as well as outlining exciting future directions, including applications. It includes a substantial introduction to the topic, which is suitable for newcomers to the field.

Die Industrialisierung des 19. Jahrhunderts veranderte die landliche Lebenswelt von Grund auf: Aus Bauern und Handwerkern wurden Fabrikarbeiter. Mit den neuen Erwerbsweisen ubernahmen die Fabrikarbeiter auch neue, "stadtische" Lebens- und Denkweisen. Alte (dorfliche) Autoritaten, insbesondere die Kirche und das von ihr vermittelte Wissen, wurden zunehmend in Frage gestellt. Die vorliegende Arbeit geht dem Wandel innerhalb der religiosen Wissenskultur der landlichen Gesellschaft nach. Am Beispiel des Leseverhaltens, der Teilnahme an kirchlichen Vereinen und Veranstaltungen, aber auch des nonkonformen Verhaltens fragt sie nach dem Wandel der Kirchlichkeit des Einzelnen sowie gesellschaftlicher Gruppen. In vergleichender Perspektive wird am Beispiel des Oberamts Esslingen (Wurttemberg) untersucht, wie die evangelische und die katholische Kirche auf diesen Wandel reagierten.
