Entering the Moral Middle Ground

Entering the Moral Middle Ground

Hubert J. M. Hermans

Cambridge University Press
2024
sidottu
Many social and political groups consider each other as enemies rather than opponents with whom one can openly disagree. By introducing the concept of a moral middle ground, this book aims to overcome the perceived separation between good and bad, highlighting the possibility that human actions are permissible, understandable, and even valuable. To elucidate the nature of the moral middle ground and its psychological potentials, the author uses his theoretical framework, Dialogical Self Theory (DST). On the basis of these ideas, he portrays a variety of phenomena, including healthy selfishness, black humor, white lies, hypocrisy and the world views of some historical figures. He then demonstrates how the moral middle ground contributes to the development of a human and ecological identity. As a result, students and researchers in various disciplines, including psychology, literary studies, moral philosophy, political science, history, sociology, theology and cultural anthropology, will benefit from this book.

In this volume, Dialogical Self Theory is innovatively presented as a guide to help elucidate some of the most pressing problems of our time as they emerge at the interface of self and society. As a bridging framework at the interface of the social sciences and philosophy, Dialogical Self Theory provides a broad view of problem areas that place us in a field of tension between liberation and social imprisonment. With climate change and the coronavirus pandemic serving as wake-up calls, the book focuses on the experience of uncertainty, the disenchantment of the world, the pursuit of happiness, and the cultural limitations of the Western self-ideal. Now more than ever we need to rethink the relationship between self, other, and the natural environment, and this book uses Dialogical Self Theory to explore actual and potential responses of the self to these urgent challenges.

Causal inference is a complex scientific task that relies on evidence from multiple sources and a variety of methodological approaches. By providing a cohesive presentation of concepts and methods that are currently scattered across journals in several disciplines, Causal Inference: What If provides an introduction to causal inference for scientists who design studies and analyze data. The book is divided into three parts of increasing difficulty: causal inference without models, causal inference with models, and causal inference from complex longitudinal data.FEATURES: • Emphasizes taking the causal question seriously enough to articulate it with sufficient precision • Shows that causal inference from observational data relies on subject-matter knowledge and therefore cannot be reduced to a collection of recipes for data analysis • Describes causal diagrams, both directed acyclic graphs and single-world intervention graphs • Explains various data analysis approaches to estimate causal effects from individual-level data, including the g-formula, inverse probability weighting, g-estimation, instrumental variable estimation, outcome regression, and propensity score adjustment • Includes software and real data examples, as well as ‘Fine Points’ and ‘Technical Points’ throughout to elaborate on certain key topicsCausal Inference: What If has been written for all scientists that make causal inferences, including epidemiologists, statisticians, psychologists, economists, sociologists, political scientists, computer scientists, and more. The book is substantially class-tested, as it has been used in dozens of universities to teach courses on causal inference at graduate and advanced undergraduate level.

Lawless Youth (1947) is a book prepared under the auspices of the International Committee of the Howard League for Penal Reform during the Second World War, aiming for the day when peace could offer the opportunity for advance on the lines of justice and humanity. The authors visualised the grim reality of winning back for society the children and young men and women whom war had made rebels and outlaws, inured to violence. The chapters published here are the results of great thought, and offer the ideal for dealing with the youth of the day.

Begun in 1966, The World Today Series® offers a penetrating look into every nation—its geographical setting, history, current government, politics, cultures, economy, as well as its problems and prospects. The up-to-date content is effectively supplemented with maps, photographs, original art, and comprehensive bibliographies. As events become more remote, their descriptions are condensed with each new edition. This allows room to present the important, current happenings that have occurred since publication of the previous edition, along with insightful discussion of the reasons they occurred and the implications for the future. The result is a series of well-proportioned, complete, and very up-to-date texts that focus on current events—uncluttered with unnecessary and repetitive background detail. Each new edition brings the world into today’s perspective for the reader. Revised and published each August, the books in the series provide important details and analysis for each country, with sharp focus on the realities of today’s events. Year after year, the combination of factual accuracy and up-to-date detail along with the informed projections make The World Today books are outstanding resources for researchers, practitioners in international development, media professionals, government officials, potential investors, students, and high-school, college & public libraries. Available in both print and e-book formats and priced low to fit student and library budgets!

This volume comprises the proceedings of the 1995 Cardiff symposium on sieve methods, exponential sums, and their applications in number theory. Included are contributions from many leading international figures in this area which encompasses the main branches of analytic number theory. In particular, many of the papers reflect the interaction between the different fields of sieve theory, Dirichlet series (including the Riemann Zeta-function), and exponential sums, whilst displaying the subtle interplay between the additive and multiplicative aspects of the subjects. The fundamental problems discussed include recent work on Waring’s problem, primes in arithmetical progressions, Goldbach numbers in short intervals, the ABC conjecture, and the moments of the Riemann Zeta-function.
