Life Histories of the Dobe !Kung

Life Histories of the Dobe !Kung

Nancy Howell

"Life Histories of the Dobe !Kung" re-examines an important anthropological data set for the Dobe !Kung, the well-known 'Bushmen' of the Kalahari Desert, collected by Nancy Howell and colleagues. Using life history analysis, Howell reinterprets this rich material to address the question of how these hunter-gatherers maintain their notably good health from childhood through old age in the Kalahari's harsh environment. She divides the population into life history stages that correlate with estimated chronological ages and demonstrates how and why they survive, even thrive, on a modest allotment of calories. She describes how surplus food is produced and distributed, and she considers both the motives for the generous sharing she has observed among the Dobe !Kung and some evolutionary implications of that behavior.
Land, Family and Inheritance in Transition

Land, Family and Inheritance in Transition

Cicely Howell

Cambridge University Press
2010
pokkari
The nature and organisation of English rural society changes considerably between the later Middle Ages and the early modern period. In this book Dr Howell makes use of both the medieval and the early modern sources relevant to the economic, social and administrative history of Kibworth Harcourt, a village in Leicestershire, in order to identify, date and describe the phases of this transition: a transition from a close-knit society of self-sufficient peasants to a diversified, regionally orientated society of commercial farmers, artisans and landless labourers. Particular attention is paid to the composition and age structure of the peasant family, polarisation in the size of holdings, increasing specialisation in land use and improvements in diet, housing and the standard of living. The book will appeal to all serious students of social and economic history, to geographers, and in Britain to professional and amateur local historians.
An Introduction to Seismological Research

An Introduction to Seismological Research

Modern seismology is a relatively new science; most current ideas originated no earlier than the latter half of the nineteenth century. The focus of this book is on seismological concepts, how they originated and how they form our modern understanding of the science. A history of seismology falls naturally into four periods: a largely mythological period previous to the 1755 Lisbon earthquake; a period of direct observation from then to the development of seismometers in the late 19th century; a period during which study of seismic arrival times were used to outline the structure of the earth's interior extending to the 1960s; the modern era in which all aspects of seismic waves are used in combination with trial models and computers to elucidate details of the earthquake process. This history attempts to show how modern ideas grew from simple beginnings. Ideas are rarely new, and their first presentations are often neglected until someone is able to present the evidence for their correctness convincingly. Much care has been used to give the earliest sources of ideas and to reference the basic papers on all aspects of earthquake seismology to help investigators find such references in tracing the roots of their own work.

The world around us, natural or man-made, is built and held together by solid materials. Understanding their behaviour is the task of solid mechanics, which is in turn applied to many areas, from earthquake mechanics to industry, construction to biomechanics. The variety of materials (metals, rocks, glasses, sand, flesh and bone) and their properties (porosity, viscosity, elasticity, plasticity) is reflected by the concepts and techniques needed to understand them: a rich mixture of mathematics, physics and experiment. These are all combined in this unique book, based on years of experience in research and teaching. Starting from the simplest situations, models of increasing sophistication are derived and applied. The emphasis is on problem-solving and building intuition, rather than a technical presentation of theory. The text is complemented by over 100 carefully-chosen exercises, making this an ideal companion for students taking advanced courses, or those undertaking research in this or related disciplines.

Geographies of Regulation

Geographies of Regulation

Philip Howell

Cambridge University Press

In the nineteenth century British authorities at home and abroad attempted to regulate prostitution in order to combat the spread of venereal diseases. Philip Howell examines in detail four sites of such regulated prostitution - Liverpool, Cambridge, Gibraltar and Hong Kong - and considers the similarities as well as the differences between colonial and metropolitan practices. Placing these sites within their local, regional and global contexts, the author argues that the British administration of commercial sexuality was deeper and more extensive than conventionally portrayed. The book challenges our understanding of what constitutes colonial regulation and also confronts imperial historiographies in which projects are simply translated from metropolis to periphery. By emphasizing both particular sites of regulated prostitution, and their place in the British imperial world, this book contributes not only to histories of gender and sexuality, but also to the revision of British imperial history.

Being the proud author of this book, I deeply admire LTWC and Toogee Sielsch for their devotion, love, and care for the wildlife they rescue, rehabilitate, and release. In "Living in Harmony with the Wildlife in Lake Tahoe" the mission is to educate everyone the importance of understanding wildlife and how to safely enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe. In the Bear's Tale section of the book there are stories of popular well-loved bears and their cubs that have captured the hearts of the locals. The locals, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, and other organizations have great pride and respect for the wildlife in Tahoe. The wildlife is part of their family and community. The Tahoe community encourages visitors and new locals to use their new knowledge to maintain the safety and harmonious cohabitation with the wildlife. Lori is an award-winning author, artist, wildlife advocate, wife, mother, and grandmother. Her passion for the black bears, the wildlife's well-being and her treasured memories of growing up in Lake Tahoe inspired her writing of this book. "Living in Harmony with the Wildlife in Lake Tahoe" is a great informative and educational book for everyone to learn their responsible part to coexist with the wildlife. An awareness that must be heard and act accordingly.
