There’s more to life than being fabulous… but it’s a startRoz and Jamie have moved to leafy Suffolk from London in search of a quiet life, so it’s a shock to find the village embarking on its riotous annual drag competition. Fuelled by large quantities of alcohol and boisterous community spirit, they are soon caught up in a battle for the identity of the village itself against those who’d prefer to stay stuck in the past.Meanwhile in San Francisco, Drew is facing his own challenge to save his drag club and the livelihoods of his closest friends. When he finds out about a small English village putting on a drag competition, inspiration strikes – and worlds collide.Appearances are not everything and sometimes human connections can surprise us, but will these realisations be too late to save the village and Drew’s club?A gorgeously fun, heartwarming and tender story of unexpected friendships and acceptance.'This is like an edgy Jilly Cooper – lots of eccentric characters and a lot of fun!' Katie Fforde'Truly terrific...I love this book' Judy Astley'High jinks and high heels... Imagine The Archers in drag, with a huge heart and lots of laughs' Veronica Henry

Something terrible is happening on the Island. Christine is having a chat with Mattie and two of the other villagers. Christine is at one end of the long table, with Mattie at the other. The two villagers flank Mattie. "It is time," Mattie states. "What do you know about these affairs?"Christine looks at the hands in her lap. The dim room can't hold a candle to the intensity of the conversation, or the lack thereof. Christine's head is down and her shoulders droop under the weight of Mattie's scrutiny. "It ain't his fault," she mutters more to herself than anyone else in the room. "It ain't his fault.""Who" asks Lukas, the villager to Mattie's left."What ain't his fault?" asks Temple, the villager to the right.Mattie's firm face watches in silence, her focus directed at the other end of the table. Christine raises her head, her lips are tightly pressed, her eyes defiant. Mattie speaks not a word. She takes an object out of her pocket and holds it as she continues to stare straight ahead. The two beside her shrink back, the entire focus in the room is now narrowed to the two ends of the table. The root in Mattie's hands holds sway. Christine drops her eyes, her head follows. "Truth," Mattie demands, "Now. Do this affect the whole village, or just you?" Christine lips are trembling but stay together."Girl you hear me?" Mattie asks. "Look here," she lifts the root in her hand. "You understand what this can do?"Christine sighs, "They can go. It don't matter to the whole village." Mattie remains still for a second, then straightens her shoulders and points the two to the door. Lukas and Temple disappear in a flash.Mattie replaces the object from her hand back into her pocket. "Now, me and you, we gon' talk this out here and now, understand? Who these peoples that are using our island? What they want and why is you helpin'?" Christine spreads her hands in supplication but Mattie is unimpressed. In fits and starts the story unfolds. Christine twists and wiggles in her chair, Mattie is a stone statue. When the story stops, Mattie speaks for the first time. "Did you know they gonna poison Mr. Henderson?""How..how did you know he was poisoned?" Christine can't believe what she is hearing."His girl here this afternoon. I like that girl. She is asking about funeral practices. She wants to be sure she ain't upsetting us. Think on that, she cares bout what us think. She is asking about poison plants here on the island. She lies and says it is about some book." Here Mattie stops for a brief snort. She shakes her head, "That girl one horrible liar. Now you tell me, what these people wanting that they has to go kill a man like Mr. Henderson.""He figured out that they using the island to store drugs til they can get them over to Atlanta. They ain't causing no problem for this island or our people. They are like your ancestors, they current day pirates using this island as a protected spot."Mattie listens, "And whose fault ain't this? A man is dead. This ain't no snatch and run."

In the 1930s, 15-year old Mary Marks moved to a rural community along the Imnaha River in northeast Oregon's Wallowa County. There, in country so remote that electricity didn't arrive until the 1960s, she married and built a life of hard work and deep friendships with family and neighboring ranchers. Through it all, she kept a diary, four lines a day for sixty years. This is the story of Mary's life, revealed by those diaries and conversations with her long-time friend, Janie Tippett. As much as anything, this is a story of friendship between two women, a friendship built on a common love for ranching and for the wild, rugged country of the Imnaha.

This course-based primer provides newcomers to the field with a concise introduction to some of the core topics in the emerging field of topological insulators. The aim is to provide a basic understanding of edge states, bulk topological invariants, and of the bulk--boundary correspondence with as simple mathematical tools as possible. The present approach uses noninteracting lattice models of topological insulators, building gradually on these to arrive from the simplest one-dimensional case (the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for polyacetylene) to two-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulators (the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model for HgTe). In each case the discussion of simple toy models is followed by the formulation of the general arguments regarding topological insulators. The only prerequisite for the reader is a working knowledge in quantum mechanics, the relevant solid state physics background is provided as part of this self-containedtext, which is complemented by end-of-chapter problems.

Politics as a Moral Problem

Politics as a Moral Problem

In a world where politics is often associated with notions such as moral decay, frustration and disappointment, the feeling of betrayal, and of democracy in trouble, Kis examines theories about the morality of political action. Amending the two classical theses of realism and of indirect motivation in politics, Kis argues for a constrained thesis of realism and a wide thesis of indirect motivation. By these means the place of moral motivation and common deliberation can be identified, and political agents can be held morally accountable. The analysis refers to a broad range of classic and contemporary literature as well as to recent cases from international politics which call for moral judgment. The Appendix is dedicated to Václav Havel’s seminal essay on “The Power of the Powerless,” which sheds light on the diversity of approaches dissident intellectuals have taken to politics.

A Foreigner's Collection of English Jokes
This book is a collection of jokes, from clean dad jokes to dark humour. The aim was to collect a variety of jokes to ensure that you can always find a type of joke you like, at any time in any mood. Most of the jokes are in British English, but there are also some American and international ones, as humour is a global spectacle. The chapters are arranged with a purpose: to make sure there's something for everyone. We begin with the gentler side of humour: dad jokes, riddles, and knock-knock jokes. The sort of material you can share with just about anyone without a risk of offence (other than the odd groan). As you read on, the jokes become spicier and more controversial, touching on politics, religion, and identity. From there, the jokes turns darker with a chapter of adult and dark humour. And finally, we close with the gloriously pointless anticlimax of the Shaggy Dog Story: long, meandering tales that promise much and deliver very little, apart from the joy of the groan. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following chapters are waiting for you: Dad Jokes Knock-Knock Jokes Riddles British One-Liners Wordplay. Anti Jokes Situational (and surreal) Jokes Pub and bar Jokes Jokes about religion Jokes about Politics Jokes about Identity Dark Humour and Adult Humour Shaggy Dog Stories ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why this book could be what you are looking for: Entertainment on Demand - No WiFi, no loading time, just flip a page and laugh.
