Musical AKAs

Musical AKAs

Jeanette Marie Drone

Scarecrow Press
2006
sidottu
There are many reasons for musical artists to write or compose under an assumed name: be it hiding or drawing attention to their ethnicity or gender, pursuing an additional career or genre, or writing a parody or humorous music. Often, nicknames are assigned to composers and lyricists, whether they want them or not. Whatever the reasons for these artists to use assumed names instead of or in addition to their own, this comprehensive resource has amassed and cataloged them. Musical AKAs is a wide-ranging index of assumed names and sobriquets of approximately 9,800 composers, songwriters, lyricists, librettists, hymnists, and writers of music. More than 15,000 assumed names—whether legal name changes, pseudonyms, pen names, or nicknames—have been collected into one easy to reference listing. Author Jeanette Drone has assembled information from numerous music sources—including comprehensive and biographical dictionaries and encyclopedias, biographies, journals, Internet web sites, and print and online copyright sources—and organized them into this extensive four-part volume. Part I alphabetically lists the sources in which assumed names or sobriquets were found for three or more individuals. Part II lists alphabetically the original names of artists from both popular and classical music, detailing their assumed names and sobriquets, dates, occupations, source codes, and complete bibliographic citations for print and Internet sources. The pseudonyms are cataloged alphabetically in Part III, with references to the original names. Musical AKAs concludes with Part IV, offering additional explanatory information on both original and assumed names.

Education, Values and Ethics in International Heritage
The changing and evolving relationship between museums and communities, Indigenous, ethnic and marginalized, has been a primary point of discussion in the heritage sector in recent years. Questions of official and unofficial heritage, whose artefacts to collect and exhibit and why, have informed and influenced museum practice. Developing from this, a key issue is whether it is possible to raise awareness of differing cultural perspectives, values and beliefs and incorporate this into the education and training of heritage professionals, with the aim of making 'cultural awareness' an integrated and sustainable core part of future heritage training and practice. This book discusses perceptions of values and ethics, authenticity and significance, and documents the historical, heritage and education context in North America, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, with a particular emphasis on Aotearoa New Zealand. The author explores whether it is possible to learn respect for differing cultural perspectives through the undertaking of educational programmes, identifies various approaches that could complement the development of students and professionals in the cultural heritage and preservation sectors, and offers a means of actively engaging with cultural and professional values through a Taxonomy for Respecting Heritage and Values.

More than a decade after the end of the cold war has chilled the Marxist rebel movements around the world, one hot spot remains: Colombia. Why a democratic country with a growing economy should still feel the brushfires of a civil war is a mystery to U.S. analysts, but not to certain parties on the other side of the world. The inexplicable loss of three major U.S. assets draws the attention of the world to the Colombian demilitarized zone. Are the local Colombian rebels responsible? Or is a deadly Middle Eastern secret cloaked by the jungle canopy of the DMZ? Among the contingent of politicians and media headed for the DMZ seeking answers is reporter Julie Baker, whose parents had been missionaries in Colombia. Old hurts and terrors surge as she revisits the place of her birth... and her parents' deaths. When Julie's own abduction by guerrillas triggers a time bomb that has been ticking under the feet of the U.S. for a decade, she is left with more questions than answers.

Junkyard Dreams

Rita Vargas owns an automobile junkyard outside of Santa Fe. Her property abuts a hill with a spectacular view, making the junkyard a magnet for ubiquitous developers. But Rita's land has been in her family for generations, and she doesn't want to sell. Also, her son Parker, a talented artist, uses salvaged pieces from the junkyard for his sculptures. Local wheeler-dealer Leroy Sena has already bought the ridge above Rita's property, and when Leroy sells that land to a small-time landlord and his gallery-owner sweetheart, the stakes are raised. In ""Junkyard Dreams"", old-timers retaining their emotional ties to the land face newcomers with money who want to build on every hilltop. This first novel illustrates that for every person opposed to the rapid growth of the real estate bonanza, two more people are scheming on how to profit from the boom. This seriously political but realistically compelling portrayal of land conflict confronts the trade-offs between improvement and preservation.

Some gay Christians have sought healing. Others have turned away from a conservative interpretation of the biblical texts. Others have remained celibate and invested their lives in Christian service. All have found that their sexual orientation has strongly influenced who they perceive themselves to be, and how others perceive them. Jeanette believes that to identify herself as 'gay' does not do justice to what God has been doing in her life. As a Christian you can be identified by the fact that you belong to Christ. Allowing God to dismantle your false identity permits you to live out of your authentic self. As you grow in Christ you are able to perceive true goodness and health; you rid yourself of old habits of thinking; you learn to recognise what is holding others back; and discover new areas of ministry. You do not have to accept the labels that the world - and the church - attach to you. Jeanette's book is in four parts: Identity; Surrender; Abiding; and Fruitfulness.

Medieval Translators and Their Craft

Medieval Translators and Their Craft

Jeanette Beer

Medieval Institute Publications

At no time in the history of the West has translation played a more vital role than in the Middle Ages. Centuries before the appearance of the first extant vernacular documents, bilingualism, and preferably trilingualism, was a necessity in the scriptorium and chancery; and since the emergence of Romance had rendered the entire corpus of classical literature incomprehensible to all but the "literati," both old and new worlds awaited (re)discovery or, to use Jerome’s metaphor, "conquest." The diversity of medieval translation is illustrated, although not encompassed, by the diversity of chapters in the present volume. Authors treat the methods and reception of translators of vernacular to Latin and vernacular to vernacular, texts of a variety of genres and many different languages and periods. The collection will present a welcome offering of different scholarly approaches to the critical issue of medieval translators and their craft.
