This book offers a detailed analysis of John Locke’s case for toleration and proposes an interpretation that shows the links between his political reasoning and his reflection on the ethics of belief. Locke is concerned with toleration not only when he discusses the ends of the Commonwealth, but also when he assesses the duties of private persons regarding the search for truth. The purpose of this book is to shed light on both of these branches, which have not been sufficiently explored in other studies on Locke. With particular attention to the notions of charity, obstinacy, fallibility, reciprocity and distinction between belief and knowledge, the author proposes a reading of the Epistola de Tolerantia, an extensive discussion of the controversy between Locke and Jonas Proast, as well as an examination of An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, in order to establish the meaning and interconnection of Locke’s arguments in favour of toleration.

Jahrhunderts, Note: 2,7, Friedrich-Schiller-Universit t Jena (Institut f r Philosophie), Veranstaltung: John Locke - Versuch ber den menschlichen Verstand, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit wird sich den Betrachtungen John Lockes ber den Menschlichen Verstand widmen, und zwar im Besonderen seinem Konzept der angeborenen spekulativen Ideen, beziehungsweise seiner Widerlegung dieses Konzeptes. Denn die Auffassung Lockes ist es, dass wir vollkommen unbefleckt in diese Welt kommen, als eine "tabula rasa," gleich einem noch unbeschrieben Wachst felchen, in welches erst die Zeichen noch hineinkommen m ssen. Leibnitz hingegen vertritt die Position, dass es solche angeborenen Ideen sehr wohl gibt, und dass sie unabdingbarer Bestandteil unserer selbst sind. Locke legte seine Auffassungen hierzu und zu weiteren Betrachtungen ber den menschlichen Verstand in seiner Schrift "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" (Versuch ber den menschlichen Verstand) dar, welche 1690 erschien. Das Werk Leibnitz', in welchem er ausf hrlich einer Kritik an Lockes Werk nachgeht und sich hierbei Schritt f r Schritt am "Versuch ber den menschlichen Verstand" orientiert, nannte er "Neue Abhandlungen ber den menschlichen Verstand." Hierin l sst er die Auseinandersetzung mit Locke ber einen Dialog geschehen, in welchem die eine Figur, Theophilus, ihn selbst repr sentiert, und die andere, Philalethes, die Argumentation Lockes verteidigt. Leibniz macht schon ganz zu beginn klar, dass er Lockes Werk zwar sehr sch tzt, aber "in einigen wichtigen Punkten die Vernunft mehr gelten solle als seine Lockes] Autorit t"1. Seine "neue Abhandlung" erscheint 1765, also gut 49 Jahre nach seinem Tod 1716.

In the course of his career, Locke developed his own philosophical and political ideas which were rooted in the tradition of the English Empiricism (and Pragmatism) with the predecessors William of Ockham and Francis Bacon. In applying his philosophy to politics or education, Locke was always guided by practical utility. In his reasoning he was never undermining the logical basis for the conduct of practical life. Locke's political philosphy, especially that which he enfolds in the Second Treatise of Government, highly influenced the formulation of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the USA.
