Baksidestext: Allt börjar i mitten av 1600-talet. Jon Elofsson är på hemväg från höstmarknaden i Torsby, när han brutalt mördas. Mördaren grips av två bönder, som senare släpper mördaren. Detta orsakar stor uppståndelse både i familjen och i bygden i övrigt. Hur kan man släppa en mördare? Jons äldsta son Håkan, som föräldrarna hade förväntat sig skulle ta över gården, ger sig i stället i väg till Stockholm. En lång vandring för en tonåring, men han finner sig väl tillrätta som skräddarlärling under en tid. Efter ännu en tid i Värmland återvänder han till Stockholm och tjänstgör som kammartjänare hos höga militärer, vilket så småningom leder honom till Jämtland och ett liv som soldat och deltagande i olika krig. Efter krig och fångenskap ”belönas” han för sina insatser med länsmansuppdrag på flera orter. Den längsta tiden i Ragunda, där han så småningom slutar sina dagar. Kriget satte djupa spår i honom och hans temperament orsakade att han många gånger ställdes inför rätta.
Denna skrift återger dagboksanteckningar som skrevs i Undersvik åren 1886–90 av Lars Olof Fahlén. Vid ett besök våren 2003 hos Karl-Hugo Salling i Nyköping, 79 år, fick jag kännedom om dagboken. Det var hans morfar som skrivit. Han ställde den till mitt och Carinas förfogande. Vi ville gärna dokumentera innehållet – tolka texten, identifiera de personer som omnämndes och också hitta tidstypiska bilder på folk och gårdar som kunde illustrera texten. Efter ett intensivt arbete under lite mer än ett år blev vår skrift klar. Det första exemplaret gick till Karl-Hugo våren 2004. Han hade då varit sjuk en längre tid och det var ovisst hur långt tid han hade kvar att leva. Några månader senare dog han. Inte bara Carina och jag blev nöjda med resultatet utan även Karl-Hugo. Såhär skrev hans dotter Margareta till mig den 3 december 2004: ”Jag vill tacka dig än en gång för att du gjorde min pappa så stolt och glad genom att publicera hans morfars dagbok och för ditt stora och genuina intresse för hans släktforskning. Pappa kände stor gemenskap och vänskap med dig och han var stolt som en tupp att få se dagboken i tryck innan han dog”. Det verkade inte vara några riktiga ”bondtag” i Lars Olof Fahlén, men han måste ju acceptera att bli måg i gården för att få gifta sig med dottern. Han hade dock andra idéer, intressen och visioner som han drivande förverkligade på ett framgångsrikt sätt. Denna personlighet tycks sitta i generna. De har med tydlighet överförts från Lars Olof till efterföljande generationer. Det kanske mest slående exemplet gäller Karl-Hugos barnbarn Sofia som blev en av U.S.A:s främsta TV-kändisar, bara 22 år gammal. Lars Olof Fahléns karriär fick ett snöpligt slut har Karl-Hugo berättat. Han blev lurad i en fastighetsaffär av klockaren och organisten i Sunne församling, Värmland. Han trodde nämligen alltför gott om kyrkans tjänare, vilket kostade honom hans livsverk. Han blev ruinerad och gick i konkurs./Gunnar Bergman
