The Communication Experience: A Guide to Successful Public Speaking introduces students to the study of public speaking by focusing on four foundational conclusions about the communication experience: that writing, reading, critical thinking, and speaking skills are needed to succeed in any academic or professional setting; that public speaking is just one of many communication skills needed to succeed; that speeches are more than something that you cut and paste together; and that public communication is often made more difficult than it has to be.The text helps students recognize the role of public speaking within the larger practice of communication, develop essential skills for and approaches to speechmaking, and understand and overcome communication apprehension. The text is organized into three units. Unit one focuses on the global communication experience. In unit two, students learn about academic and professional speechmaking. Unit three teaches readers how to personalize their speeches, addressing ways they can cultivate their own unique style and customize their content. Individual chapters address various communication environments; incorporating audience ethics into speechmaking; argumentation; hearing versus listening; tailoring a speech for a specific audience; organizational strategies for speeches; storytelling in academic and professional presentations; finding your voice; and more. The Communication Experience is an exemplary resource for courses and programs in public speaking and communication.

Eddie knew he was having a bad day when some Colombian thug knifed his partner to death and a rival crew boss shoved a shotgun up Eddie's nose to hijack both Eddie's money and the Colombian's case full of quality Charlie. It should have been the perfect deal, except it all went totally wrong. DI Mike Fennick and DS Steve Hansen, of the Cheshire Constabulary, had originally been brought in as observers, but DCS Jimmy Raynolds isn't above hijacking extra manpower when his reputation's at stake and the press are screaming for blood. He wants it all wrapped up as fast as possible. But that's not going to be easy, especially when the local criminal cognoscenti get wind of some "poncey Southerners" stepping onto their territory unannounced, trying to offload gear wholesale. Not forgetting that Eddie desperately wants answers. Or perhaps that should be revenge? And the more he digs up, the less he feels he can trust those around him.But maybe that's just down to all the crystal meth he's been doing of late? The problem is, like Eddie, the rest of the investigation team have enough secrets of their own.And when it starts to look like someone is on a personal mission to tidy up the loose ends, the question has to be: Who?

"Gooney Bird Driver" is a collection of war stories from C-47 pilot Joe D. Maguire, one of the "forgotten pilots" of the 27th Air Transport Group which carried just about everything across war torn Europe in World War 2, from wounded troops to cans of black and white paint (for adding invasion stripes to aircraft) to the Glenn Miller Band. Joe completed 35 combat missions, racking up hundreds of hours, often under intense enemy fire, but due to a series of administrative SNAFUs, he and his unit weren't officially recognized for their service until almost 50 years after the war ended. Eventually he was awarded the DFC, Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters and the French Legion d'Honneur, among many other accolades for his courage and devotion to duty. These are his stories, illustrated with many of his own personal photographs and mementoes, and told in his own words to his son, noted author and historian Jon A. Maguire.

Teaching Historical Narratives

Teaching Historical Narratives

Jon A. Levisohn

With this book Jon Levisohn argues that current history education is set up in a way that sees students of history at one end of a continuum with the academic experts in the field of history at the other, and where the goal of history education is to help students to think like historians. Building on a critical engagement with Carl Hempel, Hayden White, and David Carr, as well as contemporary work in virtue epistemology, Levisohn proposes a new theory of historiography which serves as a set of guidelines for the teaching and learning of history. According to the theory, the work of historiography is best characterized as a negotiation among narratives, weaving together received narratives with new information and ideas in order to construct a new narrative. This negotiation happens with a particular orientation towards negative evidence or ‘flexible disconfirmationism’, and is assessed according to the openness, sensitivity, responsibility, creativity, boldness and humility, i.e. the virtues of historical interpretation. The book rethinks the work of history education, offering new ways of thinking about the goals of the teaching of history, namely, in terms of the cultivation of the interpretive virtues.

An insightful examination of intra-party conflict in Wyoming, revealing a fundamental disagreement between Republicans that will determine the future of the American right. No state has been more Republican and loyal to Donald Trump than Wyoming. The appearance of homogeneity, though, masks a fierce battle for the future of the party. In The Republican Civil War, Stephanie Muravchik and Jon A. Shields draw on years of on-the-ground research and dozens of interviews with elected officials and activists, finding a party divided over whether it should abandon its traditional focus on governance for a new nationalized form of identity politics. While old guard Republicans aim to solve local problems within an ethos of noblesse oblige, MAGA insurgents position themselves as "true conservatives" leading a censorious crusade against the establishment. More surprisingly, the same social cleavages that divide red and blue American--class and ruralness--shape this civil war. Most of the new insurgents in the legislature don't have college degrees and see themselves as part of a rural uprising. By shedding light on a civil war in the deepest of red states, this book not only advances our understanding of the new conservative politics of identity, it also offers a clear portrait of a GOP establishment resisting--not just capitulating--to Trumpism.

Inaccuracies in Children’s Testimony combines the literature on obedience to authority with that on suggestibility to create a third literature. This book examines children’s testimony from several perspectives and gives you insightful suggestions for increasing children’s abilities to testify accurately about traumatic things that have happened to them. In doing so, you’ll learn how to ensure that those who abuse or sexually exploit children are brought to justice while those falsely accused are adequately protected. How children are questioned to learn what they have witnessed is crucial due to the effects the questioning sessions may have on their testimonies--improper questioning may lead to inaccurate answers. This is just one of the many areas of children’s testimony covered in Inaccuracies in Children’s Testimony. In each of the chapters you’ll discover new ways for increasing the accuracy and dependability of children’s testimony as you read about:factors that affect children’s testimonies suggestibility--definition and research, including sources of suggestibility how obedience to authority can explain children’s behavior as witnesses children’s memory in the courtroom and what they are able to remember how children’s involvement in the courts can be problematic free versus prompted recall--which is more accurate and why the “worst” method is often used with children Milgram’s theory of obedience to authority tied to children as witnesses review of the literature on the effects of stress, prompting, and imagination on children’s recall ideas for future researchExperts in the field of legal testimony, legal personnel, child counselors, psychologists, social workers, and faculty and students of related courses will find Inaccuracies in Children’s Testimony an essential resource for understanding the importance of making the child victim/witness more believable and reliable.

Trump's Democrats

Trump's Democrats

Stephanie Muravchik; Jon A. Shields

Brookings Institution
2020
sidottu
Why did hundreds of Democratic strongholds break for Donald Trump in 2016 and stay loyal to him in 2020?Looking for answers, Muravchik and Shields lived in three such “flipped” communities. There they discovered a political culture that was Trumpy long before the 45th president arrived on the national political scene. In these places, dominated by the white working-class, some of the most beloved and longest-serving Democratic leaders are themselves Trumpian—grandiose, combative, thin-skinned, and nepotistic. Indifferent to ideology, they promise to take care of “their people” by cutting deals—and corners if needed. Stressing loyalty, they often turn to family to fill critical political roles. Trump, resembling these old-style Democratic bosses, strikes a familiar and appealing figure in these communities.Although voters in “flipped” communities have often been portrayed as white supremacists, Muravchik and Shields find that their primary political allegiances are to place—not race. They will spend an extra dollar to patronize local businesses, and they think local jobs should go to their neighbors, not “foreigners” from neighboring counties—who are just as likely to be white and native-born. Unlike the Proud Boys, they take more pride in their local communities than in their skin color. Trump successfully courted these Democrats by promising to revitalize their struggling hometowns.Because these communities largely stuck with Trump in 2020, Biden won the presidency by just the thinnest of margins. Whether they will continue to support a Republican Party without Trump—or swing back to the Democrats—depends in part on which party can satisfy these locally grown political tastes and values. The party that does that will enjoy a stranglehold in national elections for years to come.

Weak Convergence and Empirical Processes

Weak Convergence and Empirical Processes

Aad van der Vaart; Jon A. Wellner

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2012
nidottu
This book tries to do three things. The first goal is to give an exposition of certain modes of stochastic convergence, in particular convergence in distribution. The classical theory of this subject was developed mostly in the 1950s and is well summarized in Billingsley (1968). During the last 15 years, the need for a more general theory allowing random elements that are not Borel measurable has become well established, particularly in developing the theory of empirical processes. Part 1 of the book, Stochastic Convergence, gives an exposition of such a theory following the ideas of J. Hoffmann-J!1Jrgensen and R. M. Dudley. A second goal is to use the weak convergence theory background devel oped in Part 1 to present an account of major components of the modern theory of empirical processes indexed by classes of sets and functions. The weak convergence theory developed in Part 1 is important for this, simply because the empirical processes studied in Part 2, Empirical Processes, arenaturally viewed as taking values in nonseparable Banach spaces, even in the most elementary cases, and are typically not Borel measurable. Much of the theory presented in Part 2 has previously been scattered in the journal literature and has, as a result, been accessible only to a relatively small number of specialists. In view of the importance of this theory for statis tics, we hope that the presentation given here will make this theory more accessible to statisticians as well as to probabilists interested in statistical applications.
