Strategic Adjustment of Price by Japanese and American Automobile Manufacturers
This book, originally published in 1993, develops for the US automobile industry a demand-supply model which incorporates both wholesale and retail sectors and which allows strategic pricing behaviour of US and Japanese producers to be internally determined and its effects on market behaviour and national welfare analyzed. It develops the framework for and presents the results of an econometric simulation of the transaction and wholesale prices, quantities demanded and produced, manufacturer's costs and factor demands. The impact of the Voluntary Export Restraint of 1981 on profits and consumer welfare are generated from the simulation results.

Leading Complex Projects

Leading Complex Projects

Kaye Remington

Leadership in projects has been under-represented in many of the most influential project methodologies, where the focus has been on management and process. The importance to project success of key roles such as project board member, executive sponsor, project manager, client representative or team leader, increases exponentially with the scale and complexity of the project. Kaye Remington's Leading Complex Projects draws on original, empirical research into successful leadership of complex projects, including 70 in-depth interviews with people, across a broad range of industries, selected for their roles in guiding complex projects towards successful outcomes. The book, structured around the major themes from the interviews, explains and applies emerging best-practice in a coherent and focused way. A potent combination of wisdom from leaders in practice and the latest knowledge from many fields of research will engage experienced practitioners, as well as those who are teaching and researching projects, complexity and leadership.

In a rapidly advancing era, a fresh look at the concept of hospitality from socio-cultural perspectives is needed. This book proposes that a new paradigm in hospitality has been developed in Asia due to its unique culture, social values and traditions. Based on Kaye Chon’s extensive field research and experience teaching in hospitality over three decades, this book provides a historical review of the hospitality industry. In order to continue the sustained growth of the hospitality industry and improve quality, it is vital for the industry to create new business models. A flexible approach should be adopted, using new, and different, ways to enhance business instead of traditional methods which may now be outdated. It is vital that new business models embrace innovation and, at the present time, this means finding ways to implement new technology. The eight chapters in the book are richly detailed with case studies and insights from the author's own experiences, providing cutting-edge perspectives on understanding a new paradigm of hospitality embraced in Asia. Written in an accessible style, this book will be valuable reading to students and practitioners who wish to further understand the rapidly developing hospitality and tourism industries in Asia. It will be a useful resource for those studying hospitality, tourism development, leisure studies, business studies management and the service industries.
Marriage Trafficking

Marriage Trafficking

This book examines the traffic in women for marriage, a phenomenon that has been largely overlooked in international efforts to address the problem of human trafficking. In contrast to current international and state-based approaches to trafficking, which tend to focus on sex trafficking and trafficking for forced labour, this book seeks to establish how marriage as an institution is often implicated in the occurrence of trafficking in women. The book aims firstly to establish why marriage has tended not to be included in dominant conceptions of trafficking in persons and secondly to determine whether certain types of marriage may constitute cases of human trafficking, in and of themselves. Through the use of case studies on forced marriage, mail-order bride (MOB) marriage and Fundamentalist Mormon polygamy, this book demonstrates that certain kinds of marriage may in fact constitute situations of trafficking in persons and together form the under-recognised phenomenon of ‘marriage trafficking’. In addition, the book offers a new perspective on the types of harm involved in trafficking in women by developing a framework for identifying the particular abuses characteristic to marriage trafficking. It argues that the traffic in women for marriage cannot be understood merely as a subset of sex trafficking or trafficking for forced labour, but rather constitutes a distinctive form of trafficking in its own right. This book will be of great interest to scholars and postgraduates working in the fields of human rights theory and institutions, political science, international law, transnational crime, trafficking in persons, and feminist political theory.

Memories can haunt us even if they are not our own. Kaye Howarth There are two types of legacies one can leave behind: 1. Positive 2. Negative. Mother - a hunched old shell of a lady of ninety-six; with cataract eyes, cannot see- but to her own detriment, her mind's eye still is needle-sharp. So repeatedly, old mother tortures herself, reliving that tragic weekend over sixty years ago. Her liver-spotted hands and bone fingers constantly bother discoloured tapestry threads on the arms of her chair. Confession might redeem her soul from going to hell.
