History and Systems of Psychology

History and Systems of Psychology

Cambridge University Press

History and Systems of Psychology provides an engaging introduction to the rich story of psychology's past. Retaining the clarity and accessibility praised by readers of earlier editions, this classic textbook provides a chronological history of psychology from the pre-Socratic Greeks to contemporary systems, research, and applications. The new edition also features expanded coverage of Eastern as well as Western traditions, influential women in psychology, professional psychology in clinical, educational, and social settings, and new directions in twenty-first century psychology as a cognitive and a positive science. Assuming little prerequisite knowledge, the authors discuss the people, places, and concepts that have shaped psychology's story, and show that we remain fascinated by the same enduring questions that confronted our ancestors - namely, our wonder at our subjectivity and consciousness of self. The seventh edition is fully supported by robust pedagogical features, instructor resources, and a companion website to aid student learning.
On Hunting

Hunting is our heritage, our heart, and our future. Where does hunting fit in the modern world? To many, it can seem outdated or even cruel, but as On Hunting affirms, hunting is holistic, honest, and continually relevant. Authors Grossman, Miller, and Cunningham dive deep into the ancient past of hunting and examine its position today, demonstrating that we cannot understand humanity without first understanding hunting. Readers will - discover how hunting formed us, - examine hunting ethics and their adaptation to modernity, - understand the challenges, traditions, and reverence of today's hunter, - identify hunting skills and their many applications outside the field, - learn why hunting is critical to ecological restoration and preservation, and - gain inspiration to share hunting with others. Drawing from ecology, philosophy, and anthropology and sprinkled with campfire stories, this wide-ranging examination has rich depths for both nonhunters and hunters alike. On Hunting shows that we need hunting still--and so does the wild earth we inhabit.

Employing never-before-used historical materials, the authors of Emmett Till and the Mississippi Press reveal how Mississippi journalists both expressed and shaped public opinion in the aftermath of the 1955 Emmett Till murder. Combing small-circulation weeklies as well as large-circulation dailies, Davis W. Houck and Matthew A. Grindy analyze the rhetoric at work as the state attempted to grapple with a brutal, small-town slaying. Initially coverage tended to be sympathetic to Till, but when the case became a clarion call for civil rights and racial justice in Mississippi, journalists reacted.Newspapers both reported on the Till investigation and editorialized on its protagonists. Within days, the Till case transcended the specifics of a murder in the Delta. Coverage wrestled with such complex cultural matters as the role of the press, class, gender, and geography in the determination of guilt and innocence.Emmett Till and the Mississippi Press provides a careful examination of the courtroom testimony given in Sumner, Mississippi, and the trial's conclusion as reported by the state's newspapers. The book closes with an analysis of how Mississippi has attempted to come to terms with its racially troubled past by, in part, memorializing Emmett Till in and around the Delta.

Elements of Spatial Structure is a contribution to the literature on spatial series. Written by a group with varied backgrounds in engineering, geography and statistics, who collaborated at Bristol University in the early 1970s, the book analyses certain basic properties of spatial structure. It shows how spatial elements form an essential part of the real-world problems of population distribution, of urban and regional economies, and of diffusion processes. The book is divided into three parts. Part one is concerned with a static cross-sectional approach to spatial structure and explores some aspects of the central geographical problems of region-building and trend-surface mapping. Part two moves to a dynamic framework and extends time-series analysis in a regional framework. It includes two chapters on the application of the models presented to diffusion and unemployment data in south-west England. Part three links the first two parts together through a consideration of spatial autocorrelation and spatial forecasting. Again, formal models are presented and an attempt is made to gauge their utility by applying them to test problems in the south-west.

Southeast Texas native Jim LaBove returns to the bayous and salt marshes of his youth in Sunrise Over Keith Lake, a Cajun autobiographical cookbook. With a focus on the lives of his aunt, uncle, and cousins, Jim combines stories of his Cajun childhood with traditional recipes, field sketches, and period photographs to tell a one-of-a-kind story that might surprise even the surest of lovers of Cajun culture. The book is framed by the legacy of the historic Sabine Pass Lighthouse, which borders Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. Thought to be the oldest brick structure remaining in the area, the "Sabine Light" was once an important resource for marine commerce in the area before falling into disuse and neglect early-to-mid 20th century. In considering the fate of this link between two states that has slowly been lost to time, Jim recognized the parallels between it and the people of the area surrounding the lighthouse.Sunrise Over Keith Lake is the second installment in the "Cotton's Seafood" line of autobiographical cookbooks about bayou Cajun culture in the mid-20th century. Within these books, Jim recounts the stories, adventures, and harsh lessons of life experienced by a group of people often adjacent to (but rarely the focus of) national attention: The Acadian diaspora who settled in the salt marshes of Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. The bayou Cajuns of this region lived rough, humble, unheralded lives far removed from the cosmopolitan Creole Cajun culture of New Orleans that often comes to mind in modern popular culture. The "Cotton's Seafood" books are in part a way for Jim to shine a light on the plurality of experiences and cultures that define and influence true Cajun life: As with other groups of people, there is no single monolithic "Cajun experience" to be found in the real world. In reading Sunrise Over Keith Lake, you will see a Cajun way of life that is totally distinct and unique to the area where Jim grew up. Along the way, Jim complements his remarkable stories with authentic bayou Cajun family recipes, giving you a further window into the world of this group of people (as well as a collection of unique and tasty recipes you can try for yourself). Throughout the book, Jim also painstakingly illustrates his memories with field sketches of food, animals, plant life, and objects unique to bayou Cajun culture. The first book in the series (also titled Cotton's Seafood) was released in 2016. It focused on Jim's recollections of his parents' lives, work, and recipes, and took its name from his father Cotton's seafood business. In 2017, this was followed by Sketches of My Cajun life, an art book and supplemental entry in the series featuring a new collection of Jim's grouped field sketches, grouped by subjects relevant to Cajun interests. A second art book is scheduled for publication in 2018.

After facing the Borg menace, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is looking forward to a little exploration when the enigmatic Q informs them that the universe is at stake if they don't unravel the mystery of a strange planet in this Star Trek: The Next Generation novel. Nearly two decades ago, Jean-Luc Picard took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, knowing it was an honor without equal. On her first mission, the Enterprise was sent to Farpoint Station for a simple, straightforward investigation. Perfect for a crew that had never served together. Then there was Q; an omnipotent lifeform that seemed bent on placing obstacle after obstacle in the ship's--and in particular in Picard's--way. And it hadn't ended with that first mission. When he was least expected, Q would appear. Pushing, prodding, testing. At times needling captain and crew with seemingly silly, pointless, and maddening trifles. Then it would turn all too serious, and the survival of Picard's crew was in Q's hands. Why was it today that Picard was remembering the day he took command of the Enterprise-D? Now he commanded a new ship, the Enterprise-E, with a different crew. But Picard couldn't shake the feeling that something all too familiar was going on. All too awful. All too Q.
