The Watchers in Jewish and Christian Traditions

The Watchers in Jewish and Christian Traditions

Kelley Coblentz Bautch; John C. Endres; Angela Kim Harkins

Fortress Press,U.S.
2014
pokkari
At the origin of the Watchers tradition is the single enigmatic reference in Genesis 6 to the "sons of God" who had intercourse with human women, producing a race of giants upon the earth. That verse sparked an explosion of cosmological and theological speculation in early Judaism. Here leading scholars explore the contours of the Watchers traditions through history, tracing their development through the Enoch literature, Jubilees, and other early Jewish and Christian writings. This volume provides a lucid survey of current knowledge and interpretation of one of the most intriguing theological motifs of the Second Temple period.

Adopted

Kelley Nikondeha

William B Eerdmans Publishing Co

Adoption is one of the most radically inclusive aspects of God's kingdom. All of us belong to God's family-Jesus as God's son and the rest of us as his adopted children. In Adopted Kelley Nikondeha explores how the Christian concept of adoption into God's family can broaden our sense of belonging. Drawing on her own story as both an adopted child and an adoptive mother, Nikondeha invites readers to a rich, biblically grounded understanding of adoption that reframes the way we perceive family, friends, and those in need of rescue. As Nikondeha unpacks the implications of adoption-and especially its potential to cross socioeconomic and ethnic boundaries-she offers new ways to approach conversations about family, adoption, connection, and the mystery of what it means to belong.
Historical Dictionary of the World Health Organization

Historical Dictionary of the World Health Organization

The WHO’s history spans a period of over six decades, with particular emphasis on the past twenty years. This has been a particularly busy period in WHO’s development, given the transition from international to global health cooperation, and thus the need to adapt to important changes in its operating environment. In some cases, WHO has been a direct part of the institutional arrangements that have been created, and has shared the increased funding, provided for global health. In other cases, the organization has had to adapt its activities and programs in response to rival initiatives. This has led to many changes, not only to the name of specific parts of WHO but the nature of their activities; and this second edition attempts to capture some of this institutional complexity. The Historical Dictionary of the World Health Organization covers the history of the WHO through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on key bodies, programs, events and people. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the World Health Organization.

Journeys with Florida's Indians launches readers in grades 4 through 8 on an adventure into Florida's past. Young readers will meet the Paleoindians and learn about their arrival in the Americas, then join a boy on his first mammoth hunt as he escapes stampedes and the flames of a fire drive. Next, readers move forward in time to meet Spanish explorers, the Timucua, the Calusa, and the Apalachee Indians-first through fact, then through fiction. They'll attend the first meeting between French explorers and the Timucua and learn how Europeans impacted Florida's Indians. Alternating factual chapters are filled with maps, historical engravings, and modern illustrations. Fictional chapters are narrated by Tenerife, a fictional Timucua Indian kidnapped by the Spanish as a child, whose tales about Florida's native cultures reflect his own escape and adventures on his journey home. Weitzel's book fills several basic needs for Florida's young readers and educators. It is a valuable tool for school libraries serving students in state history classes at both upper elementary and middle school levels. It highlights native cultures in northeast, northwest, and south Florida, making it appropriate for public libraries, national parks, and bookstores throughout the state. Fiction and fact are combined in an engaging introduction with solid, up-to-date history - in effect, two books in a single economical package. Combining accessible archaeology and history, compelling fiction, and more than 50 illustrations, Journeys with Florida's Indians will appeal to all young Florida readers and the teachers and librarians who work with them.
Bound to the Fire

Bound to the Fire

Kelley Fanto Deetz

THE UNIVERSITY PRESS OF KENTUCKY
2024

For decades, smiling images of "Aunt Jemima" and other historical and fictional black cooks could be found on various food products and in advertising. Although these images were sanitized and romanticized in American popular culture, they represented the untold stories of enslaved men and women who had a significant impact on the nation's culinary and hospitality traditions, even as they were forced to prepare food for their oppressors. Kelley Fanto Deetz draws upon archaeological evidence, cookbooks, plantation records, and folklore to present a nuanced study of the lives of enslaved plantation cooks from colonial times through emancipation and beyond. She reveals how these men and women were literally "bound to the fire" as they lived and worked in the sweltering and often fetid conditions of plantation house kitchens. These highly skilled cooks drew upon knowledge and ingredients brought with them from their African homelands to create complex, labor-intensive dishes. However, their white owners overwhelmingly received the credit for their creations. Deetz restores these forgotten figures to their rightful place in American and Southern history by uncovering their rich and intricate stories and celebrating their living legacy with the recipes that they created and passed down to future generations.
Love and Rage

Love and Rage

Kelley Tatro

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRESS
2022
nidottu
Love and Rage is a deeply ethnographic account of punk in Mexico City as it is lived and practiced, connecting the sounds of punk music to different styles of political action. Through compelling first-person accounts, ethnographer Kelley Tatro shows that punk is more than music. It is a lifestyle choice that commits scene participants to experimentation with anarchist politics. Key to that process is the concept of autogestión ("self-management"), a term with deep history in local leftist politics. In detailed vignettes, grounded in historical, social, and political frames, the book shows how punk-scene sounds and practices foster autogestión through intensely affective experiences, understood as manifestations of love and rage. Drawing on the history of anarchism in Mexico City, as well as social movement scholarship, Love and Rage details the pleasures and problems of using music as a tool for creating an autonomous politics.

Stories for Nothing: Samuel Beckett's Narrative Poetics is the first book to examine Samuel Beckett's trilogy and post-trilogy works, specifically in terms of their divergent approaches to narrative subjectivity. By comparing the narrational processes of Molloy, Malone meurt, and L'Innommable, Paul B. Kelley demonstrates that the negativity informing the trilogy has its underpinnings in Beckett's Proust. Culminating in the narrative aporetics of L'Innommable, this negativity is subsequently overcome in experimental fashion in post-trilogy works such as Textes pour rien, Comment c'est, and Compagnie. The result is a poetics of exhaustion whose pivotal significance for the Beckettian subject is explored.
Assimilating the Primitive

Assimilating the Primitive

Kelley R. Swarthout

This book examines the Mexican nationalist rhetoric that promoted race mixing as a cultural ideal, placing it within its broader contemporary polemic between vitalist and scientific thought. Part of its analysis compares the attitudes of anthropologist Manuel Gamio and educator Jose Vasconcelos with those of the European primitivist D. H. Lawrence, and concludes that although Gamio and Vasconcelos made lasting contributions to the construction of popular notions of "mexicanidad," their paradigms were fatally flawed because they followed European prescriptions for the development of national identity. This ultimately reinforced the belief that indigenous cultural expression must be assimilated into the dominant mestizo culture in order for Mexico to progress. Consequently, these thinkers were unsuccessful in resolving the cultural dilemma Mexico suffered in the years immediately following the Revolution."

Charcoal and Charcoal Burning

Charcoal and Charcoal Burning

Kelley D.W.

Shire Publications

nidottu
Charcoal, the smelting fuel of the Bronze Age, has been in continual use in Europe for over five thousand years and was essential to the early metalworkers. History records its manufacture and the use of its by-products but gives few details of the charcoal burners - obscure figures often working in remote forest areas. This book describes the rapid growth of the industry up to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and how the emphasis of development changed to the production and refining of charcoal's by-products - acetic acid, tar and wood spirit - for the textile industry and the rapidly growing chemical industries. The use of charcoal and its chemical products decline in the western world as methods changed but today it is still widely used in the metal industries. The industry has entered a new cycle of growth because charcoal is the only solid, high-temperature and sokeless fuel which is made from a renweable source of raw material.

A Handbook of Psychological Assessment in Business

A Handbook of Psychological Assessment in Business

Kelley A. Conrad; Curtiss P. Hansen

Praeger Publishers Inc
1991
sidottu
Leading practitioners in the field of psychological assessment approach the topic of psychological assessment in business from a variety of perspectives in this handbook, which is designed to acquaint human resource executives with the benefits of this type of employee screening. Human resource consultants review the elements of psychological testing, psychologists outline the testing and evaluative process, and executives representing a variety of businesses illustrate its effectiveness in case examples. This approach demonstrates that the goal of psychological assessment, successfully matching a prospective employee to a particular job, can be achieved by using many different formats. The text is careful to emphasize the need for trained psychologists to administer the assessment procedures and evaluate the results. Managers at all levels are then advised how best to utilize these results to minimize employee turnover. A typical assessment profile, including the written report, illustrates the nature of this valuable tool, and some of the oldest consulting firms in the country--as well as companies which currently use psychological assessments--describe its cost-efficiency in depth. End of chapter bibliographies provide access to further examination of the process and its applications, and the work concludes with a look to the requirements of tomorrow's job market and how psychological assessment can help meet those needs.
