The Chansons of Orlando di Lasso and Their Protestant Listeners

The Chansons of Orlando di Lasso and Their Protestant Listeners

Richard Freedman

University of Rochester Press
2001
sidottu
A study of how the secular lyrics of the French composer Orlando di Lasso were reworked by Protestant printers in the sixteenth century to convey new spiritual meanings. This book aims to enrich our understanding of the French secular music of Orlando di Lasso, using those songs as a means of understanding a particular community of Renaissance readers and the music books they created. Lasso's secular songs figured quite prominently in a number of collections of devotional songs issued by Protestant printers in the late sixteenth century. Lasso's profane lyrics were changed to convey spiritual meanings. This study uses theexample of such reworkings as a means of discovering how such a repertory was heard and understood by a particular community of listeners, and in so doing, it explores the history of these chansons in print, and the history of thespiritual attitudes that shaped their reception among the Huguenots. Richard Freedman is Associate Professor of Music at Haverford College.
God Spoke, I Listened: Volume 2: Surviving a Sociopathic-Paranoid Husband, Corrupt Court and Mental Health Professionals, and More
Annie Hill has finally escaped her ex-husband, Jason, a paranoid sociopath, but she and her two young ones have no money and no place to stay. She finds enough help to afford an apartment, but it is infested with roaches-and it's right above a domestic abuser. Annie hates hearing what the man does to Alice, his girlfriend. Annie wants to move but can't afford it, and her attorney has advised her to stay put in order to demonstrate mental stability to the courts. But Annie calls the police on the abuser, whose attentions are now turned toward her. As she copes with the family's new living arrangements, Annie tackles the problems of divorce court. Jason wants to retain all of their property and have full custody of their young children, something Annie cannot allow. But this is the 1970s and 1980s, and an antifeminist backlash is underway, destroying Annie's credibility in the eyes of the law. As the proceedings stretch from months into years, it seems no claim that Jason levels against Annie is too absurd to be taken seriously-and Annie has no idea how much danger her abusive neighbor poses to her and her daughter.
The Speaker Identification Ability of Blind and Sighted Listeners
Almut Braun carried out forensic phonetic speaker identification experiments (voice lineups) with 306 lay listeners. Blind listeners significantly outperformed sighted listeners when the speech recordings were presented in studio quality. For recordings in mobile phone quality or of whispering voices, blind and sighted listeners achieved similar results. The data can be used as reference material for real cases with blind earwitnesses. Furthermore, it is discussed whether blind individuals are particularly suitable to work as forensic audio analysts for law enforcement agencies.
Suprathreshold Perception in Normal-Hearing and Hearing-Impaired Listeners
The perception of sound by the human auditory system is a complex process and its understanding is of major importance for many applications in our everyday life, e.g., the estimation of noise emissions, or the development of hearing aids. The mechanics of the human auditory system and the perception of sound are investigated in psychoacoustics. Psychoacoustic studies and measures help to characterize the perception of sound. The scope of this thesis is the perception of loudness and sound intensity. Loudness perception, among other aspects, depends on temporal and spectral properties of a sound. In the present thesis temporal and spectral effects of loudness as well as the changing of the perception of loudness and sound intensity in hearing-impaired listeners are investigated. Especially regarding the loudness of subcritical noise bands, the presented results are challenging for current ideas of modeling loudness perception.
Processing of Relevant Characteristics of Complex Sounds in Normal-Hearing Listeners and Cochlear Implant Users
The auditory processing of complex signals is not yet fully understood making a clearer insight into auditory system processes worth aspiring to. One approach for this purpose is to gain a better understanding of the relations between physical parameters and hearing sensations by means of psychoacoustics. Suitable measures such as loudness help to characterize the perception of sound leading to more sophisticated loudness models which could be useful in optimizing hearing devices such as cochlear implants. The scope of this thesis therefore is the suprathreshold perception of sounds with different spectral, temporal and spatial content in normal-hearing listeners and cochlear implant users. Among others, this covers the applicability of categorical loudness scaling as a fast procedure to assess partial loudness as well as binaural and spatial hearing in cochlear implant users in a free-field measurement setup providing realistic spatial cues.
Preaching to a Postmodern World: A Guide to Reaching Twenty-First-Century Listeners
While growing churches dot our urban centers and country landscapes, church-goers and students today are actually less likely to maintain a Christian worldview than in the past. In fact, the majority of society does not even believe in objective truth. A minister out of touch with this culture is like an uninformed missionary trying to teach in a foreign country. To communicate God's Word effectively in the twenty-first century, teachers need to know how to connect with and confront an audience of postmodern listeners. In Preaching to a Postmodern World, Johnston shows pastors, seminary students, professors, lay teachers, and church leaders can reach the present age without selling out to it. The book discusses how to: - distinguish between modernism and postmodernism- understand postmodern worldviews- change the style of preaching without compromising the substance - take advantage of new opportunities provided by the cultural shift- show an inattentive society the relevance of God's truthThe author's keen insights into contemporary pop and media culture also help equip speakers to address today's listeners with clarity and relevance.

When the river spoke, I listened

When the river spoke, I listened

Raquel Costa

nidottu
""When I sit next to the river, in the quietness of late afternoon, I swear I can feel the presence of God. The same river that called me to Madrid a year ago without me fully understanding the strength of the pull yet. This September I found myself, for the third time in my life moving to a different country to live for a while. I thought I had control over my destiny, I thought that after all the changes I have lived I would want something safe, comfortable and simple. The problem is: transformation doesn't happen in safe, comfortable and simple. Transformation happens as we take genuine, courageous and deliberate steps towards our future and also when we surrender to the higher power that moves us all. This book is about my experience of seeing the signs, following them and listening hard. God speaks to us in many ways: through people, experiences and in my case, through this river. So when the river spoke, I listened.""
Beyond Salsa for Beginners: The Cuban Timba Revolution: An Introduction to Latin Music for Dancers and Listeners
After writing over 20 instructional books on Cuban piano, congas, drums, timbales, clave and bass, this is Kevin Moore's first book for non-musicians - listeners, dancers and fans of Latin music. Beyond Salsa alternates between "Listening Tours" (music history, analysis of songs, and record-collecting advice) and Rhythm Exercises chapters with singing, clapping and dancing exercises (including audio files) designed to enhance listening skills. The four Listening Tours are: I. Pre-Revolution Cuban Popular Music (1900-1959); II. Salsa and Post-Revolution Cuban Popular Music (1959-1989); Timba (1989-2012); and a special section covering Afro-Cuban Folkloric Music, Comparsa, Chang and Rumba. The rhythm exercises include the basic rhythms of each instrument, clave, various types of basic dance steps, a section on learning to feel the Latin groove properly, and a special chapter on the problems that new listeners of Afro-Cuban folkloric music sometimes have with hearing the beat and meter correctly. A link is provided for a free audio download with 107 audio files corresponding to the exercises. There's also a second download for sale with additional audio files. Also included are an extensive glossary and a beginners guide to the Spanish language and Cuban slang in music for English-speakers.
Just Beyond the Very, Very Far North: A Further Story for Gentle Readers and Listeners
The adventures of Duane the polar bear and his arctic friends continue in this charming sequel to the modern-day classic The Very, Very Far North, which Booklist compared to Winnie the Pooh in a starred review. Past the place where icebergs shiver, you will find the Very, Very Far North, where Duane and his friends are sure to make you feel right at home. You might like to share a delicious Snow Delight with warmhearted Duane. While you're slurping away, if C.C. suddenly asks you where you've come from, it's not because she's nosy; she is simply gathering scientific data. If Handsome, the musk ox, pays a visit, a quick hair combing is highly recommended. Should you notice a quiet caribou grazing nearby, well, that's just Boo's way of saying hello. And if a less-than-friendly visitor arrives to sneak, shove, and shake things up, Duane and the others might discover that life isn't always as peaceful as mid-late-afternoon nap. Fortunately, they know that change is as much a part of life as picnics and Tuesdays and cozy stories shared among friends.
