Reasons for Action and the Law

Reasons for Action and the Law

M.C. Redondo

Springer
1999

A focus on reasons for action and practical reason is the perspective chosen by many contemporary legal philosophers for the analysis of some central questions of their discipline. This book offers a critical evaluation of that approach, by carefully examining the empirical, logical and normative problems hidden behind the concepts of `reason for action' and `practical reasoning'. Unlike most other works in this field, it is a meta-theoretical study which analyses and compares how different theories use the notion of reason in their reconstruction of problems concerning issues such as normativity, the acceptance of norms, or the justification of judicial decisions. This book is directed primarily to scholars specializing in legal theory and concerned with the contribution practical philosophy can make to it, but it also contains important arguments and insights for all those interested in the controversy between legal positivists and their critics, in the theory of human action or in reason-based practical theories in general.
Merleau-Ponty's Ontology

Merleau-Ponty's Ontology

M.C. Dillon

Northwestern University Press

Originally published by Indiana University Press in 1988, this is a revised second edition containing a new preface plus an additional chapter on ""Truth in Art"". Dillon's general thesis is that Merleau-Ponty has developed the first genuine alternative to ontological dualism seen in Western philosophy. From his early work on the philosophical significance of the human body to his later ontology of the flesh, Merleau-Ponty shows that the perennial problems growing out of dualistic conceptions of mind and body, subject and object, immanence and transcendence can be resolved within the framework of a new way of thinking based on the exemplar of the worldly embodiment of thought.

Mangkunagara I (1726-1795) was one of the most flamboyant figures of eighteenth-century Java. A charismatic rebel from 1740 to 1757 and one of the foremost military commanders of his age, he won the loyalty of many followers. He was also a devout Muslim of the Mystic Synthesis style, a devotee of Javanese culture and a lover of beautiful women and Dutch gin. His enemies—the Surakarta court, his uncle the rebel and later Sultan Mangkubumi of Yogyakarta and the Dutch East India Company—were unable to subdue him, even when they united against him. In 1757 he settled as a semi-independent prince in Surakarta, pursuing his objective of as much independence as possible by means other than war, a frustrating time for a man who was a fighter to his fingertips. Professor Ricklefs here employs an extraordinary range of sources in Dutch and Javanese—among them Mangkunagara I’s voluminous autobiographical account of his years at war, the earliest autobiography in Javanese so far known—to bring this important figure to life. As he does so, our understanding of Java’s devastating civil war of the mid-eighteenth century is transformed and much light is shed on Islam and culture in Java.

This article deals with the West Semitic nomadic tribe of the Rabbeans who at the time of the Mart archives belonged to the Benjaminite con federation and controlled one of the mixed urbantribal states on the upper Middle Euphrates. It traces the history of the tribe to the end of the Late Bronze and examins its role in the struggle of the contem poraneous great powers. Then, after a long historical, it shows the descendants of the Rabbeans re-emerge, under the same name, in the same area, and in a very similar political role, during the struggle for Syria in the first century B.C.
The Arena of Tiglath-pileser III's Campaign against Sarduri II (743 BC)
In 743 B.C., Tiglath-pileser III led a victorious march against Sarduri of Urartu and his vassals. A comparison of the four extant Assyrian relations of that campaign yields a clear picture of its geographical arena. Unfortunately, Waldemar Belck, in 1904, utterly confused this picture by his identifications of two battlegrounds, Kistam and Halpi, with modern Ku?tam and Halfeti. These were uncritically followed by generations of scholars, and can still be found in serious publications . This paper, based on Assyrian and Urar?ian records, as well as on the study of the natural relief and road connections of the region in question , proposes a different reconstruction of Tiglath -pileser line of advance and of the battlegrounds along it.

It ought to have been so straightforward. Azariel Stormwolf and her betrothed, Farren Blackarrow, minyasti of The Kingdom, have retrieved two of the four lost Stones of Protection that once kept their beloved country safe. Now they have learned that the third one was chained to a white gazelle by a long-dead sorceress living in the mountains. Surely a simple hunt in the hill country would make a refreshing change from battling the evil spirits worshipped as gods by the neighbouring country of Wayast. However, the Yellow Claw terrorist guerillas have stepped up their attacks against the Kingdom's forces, targeting Farren's family. The two minyasti must use their wits, their courage and their faith, not only to thwart the plans of the Yellow Claws but also to find and capture the elusive White Gazelle itself. This is the fourth book in the Stones of the Kingdom series, a fast-paced faith-based fantasy series featuring a strong heroine, a brave hero, a quest and some stunning scenery.
