Old Lady MaryA Story of the Seen and the Unseen (Edition2024)
"Old Lady Mary: A Story of the Seen and the Unseen" by Margaret Oliphant is a Victorian-era novella that delves into the supernatural and the afterlife. The story revolves around the titular character, Old Lady Mary, who, after her death, becomes a ghost. This spectral presence allows her to observe the living and the unseen realms, exploring themes of mystery, spiritualism, and the continuation of the soul's journey. Set against a backdrop of Victorian literature, the novella reflects the period's fascination with faith and doubt, particularly in relation to the supernatural. Old Lady Mary, now a spirit, grapples with her new existence, seeking redemption and understanding of her past actions. As a ghost, she witnesses the lives of those she left behind, highlighting themes of loss and mourning, and how the living cope with the death of loved ones. The narrative is rich with ethical and moral questions, as Lady Mary reflects on her life and the consequences of her decisions. Her journey through the afterlife and her interactions with other spirits underscore the Victorian interest in spiritualism, offering readers a blend of the seen and the unseen. Through this ethereal exploration, the novella examines the boundaries between life and death, belief and skepticism, and ultimately, the quest for redemption and moral reckoning.

This book is the story of a legend. Marie was born at the end of the nineteenth century, grew up in the early days of the twentieth century and became a legend in the months culminating with the Easter Rising in 1916. This is her story. The history of Ireland is replete with legendary characters. Fionn MacCumhaill, C chulainn, Queen Meadhbh, Granuaile, Wolfe Tone, Jonathan Swift, Constance Markievicz and Michael Collins are only a few. For centuries, these legends have captured the imagination of Irish people everywhere and contributed significantly to our literature, history and culture. Some of these legends are well known historic figures. Others are also historic, but over the centuries much about their lives has been lost in the mists of time. Many others may or may not have ever lived. In every case, however, it is memorable words or heroic deeds that make a legend. Consequently there are also those who, by choice or by circumstance remain completely anonymous, leaving only the memory of their heroic acts. But these characters are no less legendary. One hundred years ago an Irish Republic was declared. The rebellion which followed was quickly crushed by the might of the British Empire but, ultimately, it led to a free and independent country. Among the legends who emerged from that struggle were many women whose names will never be known. And yet, without their deeds, there would be no modern Ireland. Marie presents her story on behalf of those women, legends all.

June Marie was a PK (preacher's kid) that loved and trusted God. As a young girl, she lived her life in fish bowl-like surroundings as most PK's do. Her early life was under the very strict control of her Victorian-minded father who was a dedicated and well loved minister. Adolescent mistakes, caused many of Junes early actions in life to be misinterpreted by some. June always refused to argue or defend herself in her own behalf, she trusted God to fight her battles and He always did. She grew to become a well loved and prolific wife, mother, grand mother and great grandmother and business woman with lots of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that all loved her. My life with June Marie was one that I lived in total amazement because we never once, had a serious argument, although we did disagree once, I forget why, while moving into a new home. We married late in life, I knew her for 42 years and we were married for 35 of those years. Her values were her ethics and she lived them daily.

He was born Alfredo Cocozza in Philadelphia's "Little Italy" on January 31, 1921. He died Mario Lanza in Rome on October 7, 1959. For most of his adult life his face and voice were known by millions the world over, but at his death only a few knew of his long and agonizing struggle against fear, insecurity, and distrust-a struggle that led him through nightmarish excesses to eventual self-destruction.Now Constantine Callinicos, for twelve years Mario's friend and musical director, tells the whole heartbreaking story of "that great talent consumed by cruel appetites." He tells of the orgies of eating that almost doubled Mario's weight in few months; of the terrible dieting by which Mario reduced as much as fifty pounds in a few weeks; of the marathon drinking bouts that canceled concerts and delayed film production; of the fits of violence, rage, and depression that kept friends and family fearing the worst; of Mario's desperate efforts to rehabilitate himself and realize the dream he had as a boy sitting beside the Victrola, listening for hours on end to the records of Enrico Caruso. It was to no avail, and "the American Caruso" came crashing down in ruin.Anecdotes of Mario's youth-warning episodes that at the time seemed no more than high-spirited pranks; his frustrating voice lessons; his kindness to "little people"; his hectic life on the concert trail; his courtship of Betty Hicks, and the depths to which their marriage descended; his discovery by Louis B. Mayer and the battle royal he made of his movie career; his difficult relationships with Edmond O'Brien, George London, Joe Pasternak, Kathryn Grayson, and Peter Lind Hayes-all these are here. Pulling no punches yet offering no service to sensationalism, THE MARIO LANZA STORY is a friend's last tribute to a great voice and a simple, generous man who could not live with himself.
