Life's Dueling Dualities

Life's Dueling Dualities

Life is simple? Follow a few maxima, and it is easy. No. In growing up, everyone must deal with a series of opposing, dual messages. For example, one hears, "If you hesitate, you lose." Good. Then, one also learns, "Look before you leap." Both are correct. What to do? And this is only one of life's six contradictions. This book identifies the six dual dueling ideas. The first is, Carpe Diem vs. Reflection and Contemplation. Or its variation, the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. The second is ambivalence, which amazingly means simultaneously loving and hating something or someone. The third involves following your heart versus the head and we all root for the Hollywood ending. The fourth looks at whether it is better to work alone or as part of a group. The fifth deals with whether you should follow the rules or challenge them. The sixth shows the advantages of having big picture views in your life while also appreciating your daily realities. The final chapter, Transcendence, offers a unique answer and alternative to all the six contradictions. As a grandfather, a father, a psychiatrist, a son, a brother, a wishing-to-be-better golfer, a jogger, a sailor, a hiker, an amateur geologist, want-to-be comedian, local newspaper reporter, and a veteran of School of Hard Knocks, the author has wrestled with all six of them and discovered moments of transcendence. In this book, he shares his observations and philosophy about all of them with his grandchildren and you. Based on this book, you can make better decisions. The book itself is engaging, insightful, witty, and entertaining. It is full of examples from history, literature, and the author's experiences. Welcome and enjoy

Trout Heaven: A Trail Guide to Landing a Big Corporate Fish or How I Found Love in Foster's Creek
Everyone in Sassafras County stays clear of the quarantined Crater Lake in fear of toxic coal spoils from the meteorite crash decades earlier. Everyone, that is, except two precocious teenage brothers who skip church one Sunday morning to try out their new rods and reels in the mysterious lake. They are amazed to land dozens of giant rainbow trout.Naturally, the state lifts the quarantine, recognizing a potential for tourist revenues. Along comes sleazy Vacation Inns and Resorts, Corp. to develop the lake, leading to a tacky town called Trout Heaven.Meanwhile across the valley, famous investigative reporter Henry Clyde Ford is frustrated with writing his memoirs in his log cabin retreat. His peace of mind and once pristine view are ruined by the new resort and town. Some excerpts: THE LOST MEMOIR: I stood up, walked around the cabin and saw nothing. I decided to go on with the plan. Well okay, so it's quiet; all the better. Here goes, I thought. But, at that very moment, as I placed my fingers back onto the keyboard ... THEY appeared I put down my coffee on my log table and watched in horror.THE FIRST GIANTS: But, I'm tellin' ya, Mr. Ford; those damn rainbow trout in that lake were bigger, much bigger ... and strong One took Johnny's bait, line and rig-reel and all, right outta his hands." THE ENCOUNTER: I could only focus on one thing at that moment as we entered the dim light of my cabin with its canvas-covered windows: I needed to touch her. I didn't know how. But, in some way, right then and no later, I needed to find out if she would respond. She had to come to me, I thought. THE UGLINESSIn my mind, at least, all the ugliness around bully Mays, plus Levine's drunken threats, employees disappearing, the execs suspicions of Tina, Bradley Armstrong's molesting her in the women's restroom, ... were adding up to stronger criminal indictments than the financial shenanigans of Vacation Inns and Resorts, Corp. And, now Sheriff Deed's assessment of Manny's murder ties in too THE CHASE: "I'm not going to hurt you O'Leary. Just want to know why you broke into headquarters. You have no right," Mays yelled." He was shaking his hands in front of him, maybe forgetting that he was wielding his favorite pearl-handle fishing knife. ... Tina tripped over a concrete parking bumper and tumbled to the asphalt. She looked back and was frozen by the sight of the huge blade.

The 13th century was a pivotal point in Western culture. Europe witnessed the rise of the great universities and the resurgence of Aristotelian thought. It was the age of reason. No man exemplified this new age more than Saint Thomas Aquinas, who was a brilliant theologian, a philosopher and privatus investigo. He was the man who perfected faith through reason. The Medieval Adventures of Thomas Aquinas is a fictional account of mysteries Saint Thomas Aquinas encountered during his life. Though a work of fiction, extensive research was carried out to maintain historical accuracy and integrity of the life and times of Saint Thomas. The stories also showcase his masterful style of theology and philosophy. The Pursuit of Truth: During his captivity by his own family, Thomas is able to solve the mysterious death of a local farmer without leaving the confines of his cell. The Reclusive Crusader: While studying in Paris, Thomas investigates the strange circumstances of a knight, recently returned from the Crusades who refuses to see anyone, not even his bride-to-be. The Werewolf of Montabaur: Seeking refuge in the small village of Montabaur, Thomas finds the villagers are living in fear of a dreaded werewolf who rips the throats from its victims. Thomas and the Templar: Thomas helps a Templar knight investigate the theft from the Templar treasury, that was reputed to be impregnable. The Chartres Mystery: While attending the consecration ceremony for the recently completed Chartres Cathedral, Thomas vows to find Chartres' most sacred relic that has been stolen. The Death of Kings: Thomas is asked by King Louis of France to try to find who is sending the king threatening notes. The Prime Mover: While giving a lecture on Quinque viae-five ways or proofs that God's existence could be proved rationally using the human intellect, Thomas learns who is behind the rash of deaths in Naples.

Communal music has the power to shape a soul and a society. In many places today, a culture of singing and making music remains robust, despite pressure from the commercial music industry. Or it was until the Covid pandemic hit and we glimpsed what a world without communal music-making could be like. According to Plato, virtuous music is vital for building a virtuous community. Jewish and Christian traditions take this insight even further: good communal music shapes and builds up the people of God. So how can we choose good music and avoid the bad? The sheer ubiquity of music available for consumption – its presence as a near-constant soundtrack to our daily lives – poses a hazard. Digital music on tap is a temptation to chronic distraction of the soul, to a habit of superficiality and non-attention. Fortunately, the remedy is straightforward: spend less time consuming prepackaged tunes and more time making music. This will be doubly rewarding if done with others – singing with one’s family, singing in church, playing in a string quartet, starting a regular jam session. If personal media players tend to cut us off from the physical presence of others, sharing in good music together breaks the spell of isolation and disembodiment. It builds friendship and community. On this theme:- Maureen Swinger’s amateur choir sings Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion.- Stephen Michael Newby says Black spirituals aren’t just for Black people. - Mary Townsend finds Dolly Parton magnificent, but would Aristotle? - Phil Christman finds catharsis in the YouTube comments of eighties songs. - Ben Crosby says congregational singing should be unabashedly weird to visitors.- Joseph Julián González draws on ancient Nahua poets in his music.- Christopher Tin explains why he weaves so many historical influences into his music. - Seven musicians talk about making your own music in schools, churches, prisons, backyards, or children’s bedrooms: Nathan Schram, Esther Keiderling, Norann Voll, Chaka Watch Ngwenya, Eileen Maendel, Adora Wong, and Brittany Petruzzi. Also in the issue: Exclusive excerpts from forthcoming books by Eugene Vodolazkin and Esther Maria Magnis- Thoughts on music from Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, Hildegard of Bingen, Martin Luther, and Eberhard Arnold- Catholics and Anabaptists unite to commemorate the Radical Reformation- New poems by Jacqueline Saphra- A profile of Argentinian singer Mercedes Sosa.- Reviews of Kate Clifford Larson’s Walk with Me, Rowan Williams’s Shakeshafte, and Sam Quinones’s The Least of UsPlough Quarterly features stories, ideas, and culture for people eager to apply their faith to the challenges we face.
